ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Got around to seeing it yesterday. Liked it a lot. I wanted to be irritated by Ren's wimpyness at times, but every time he's really faced with a choice he goes dark. Also, he evidently has more training to do. I like to think we have yet to see the true evil badarse in him like we did with Vader.

Hope so. His wimpyness really bothered me, though. We really need a true, cold-blooded badarse.

Ren will become truly evil, of that we're assured based upon Stimpy's instructions to General Hux, adding that it's time to complete Ren's training.

I want him 100x Darth Maul evil/skilled. Darth Vader on his worst bad-mood-day, after his dog died and his wife died (oh, wait, that latter part did happen). I want Hitler and Stalin say in unison, "Dayum, son...that's just too much evil for us."

I don't think you're going to get the lightsaber moves from the prequels in this new set of movies. In part, the Jedi and Sith were all but gone after RotJ, and Abrams said he wanted a more raw, emotional feel to the fights, like what we saw in the OT. Whether or not Rian Johnson, director of VIII, decides to polish the moves, we'll have to wait and see.

I guess I was more referring to the Emperor having ALL the evil, but he was frail, and only could mentally battle others. No physical battles. I want the new evil person to be all the evil of the Emperor, AND be able to physically fight.

Oh, and it's going to be thee and a half years before we find out who Rey's parents are. They'll save that tidbit for the third movie because too many people want to know and they're going to milk it for all it's worth. (I mention this because I just came across a link listing out all the parentage theories people have put out there thus far.)

No prob with that. Need that final payoff.

Another nitpick I had is that Captain Phasma was completely pointless. Heard she is back in at least the next one, though.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

I have a hunch that about 40% of the next film (if not more) will be flashback.
-- How did the old guy at the outset of the movie and Kylo Ren know each other?
-- Luke's back story from the Jedi school he started
-- plenty more that I'm not going to list out right now.

Nope, they won't do that. Those two items can be handled in less than five minutes - ten, tops.

He took a shot from chewie's bow, when earlier in the movie they made a point of showing how bad *** it was

if Captain Phasma was a real bad ***, she would have rather died than lower the shields. That bothered me.

The review of TFA from Roger Ebert's blog (yes, they've kept it going post-mortem...)

it got 3.5 stars out of 4, but then...

there is a link to this review.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve had a hard time grasping how the one film that simply couldn’t miss with a “Star Wars” lover like me (if not necessarily a diehard fan), a feature that had an overwhelming 95% positive response from critics, could leave me with such a sense of indifference.
....
The scenes where Rey and Kylo Ren do battle and the one where Han Solo meets his fate demonstrate that these new filmmakers do not grasp what their predecessors always did: it was always the character’s journeys by themselves that made the older movies enjoyable, including their falls and heartaches. After all, “The Empire Strikes Back” is the best film in the series and also the bleakest. It took aspiring Jedi Luke Skywalker two full entries of the original trilogy and many a setback to develop the necessary skills to defeat his famous father, in contrast, having Rey defeat Kylo with relative ease creates no real sense of achievement and really demeans the latter character. The same applies to the sequence where Han is killed by Kylo in such naïve fashion. Let’s face it, if one is to dispose of an iconic character that’s been around for over 38 years, the least that the audience deserves is to have this occur at a climatic moment and for a good enough reason, (think of Judi Dench’s death at the end of “Skyfall”). By the point in "The Force Awakens" when Han’s end actually comes, the movie simply hadn’t earned the right to kill him off.
....
I usually have no problem with sequels following certain formulas from its predecessors but “The Force Awakens” is more like a remake of “A New Hope” and in many instances it feels we are basically watching the same movie.
....
I always thought that "Episode VII" had the best chance among the new entries at being good, considering J.J. Abrahams outstanding résumé. As things turned out, I’d gladly take any of the prequels ... over "Episode VII" any day of the week. If this statement sounds outrageous just ask yourself: which sequence in "The Force Awakens" matches the terrific Darth Maul duel of “The Phantom Menace"?

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Now that I've had a chance to "digest" TFA for a few weeks...

If I were to graph the movies on a scatter plot of some kind, I'd put IV and V in a class by themselves as the "best of the bunch" (however measured).

Then, as "moderate" I would put VI, VIII, and I grouped together somewhat. To me, I is now under-rated. Darth Maul was a great villain, the pod race was unexpected and fun (even if preposterous), the rebels plucky and determined, blah blah blah.

Then, I'd put III down a bit lower, probably because of the preposterous ending. There is no way that the Obi-Wan character would give Anakin a stern lecture and then walk away leaving him alive. To be true to the characterization, either Obi-Wan would say, "I'm sorry Anakin but I must do this" and then kill him because that was his mission, or Obi-Wan would say, "I'm sorry Anakin but I cannot leave you to suffer so horribly" and then kill him out of mercy. How hard would it have been to have a sudden volcanic eruption separate the two after Obi-Wan crippled Anakin with the light saber stroke but before he could deliver the coup de grace? Abrams at least corrected that egregious error in the Rey - Ren duel! Also, Anakin's actions made no sense: he wants to save Amidala, so he turns to the Dark Side, then he gets so angry with her he wants to kill her? and how would the Jedi ever allow him to be part of her protective detail in the first place? just terrible inconsistencies like that annoyed me. It made the Jedi look like inattentive mindless fools overall.

Then, I'd put II down as "epic fail." The only part of that movie that made any sense to me was Obi-Wan's ten-minute visit to the clone factory on Kamino. The whole battle in the Geonosis arena was just way too preposterous for me, and having a Yoda puppet engaged in light saber duel was pathetic. and where did this Dooku character come from anyway? Just an awful film.

So it has now been reported that Disney will release the original theatrical version of the original trilogy on Bluray... rejoice!

I can't find that anywhere, other than a report where John Landis said they're going to do it. That strikes me as little more than rumor at this point. That report was on Forbes.com, from September.
