Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

Re: Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

Also, did anyone else catch the dump button being pressed on the live feed? The camera jerked around and I heard one of the announcers say "OH ...!!!" and the next word was completely cut off and the broadcast rejoined a few seconds later.

Nibali to ride the pave without gloves? Thats how Tommeke does it.

Weather reports I have seen indicate strong wind and showers. Wet pave would be fun. Though I wish it was like that during L'enfer du Nord but I guess this will have to suffice.

Prediction: the Schleckettes miraculously overcome their mental fragilities and follow Spartacus on the greasy cobbles en route to a 1-2 finish on the stage.

Wait....nevermind.

Nice finish by Demare yesterday. Good to see.

I was actually being serious... :o I honest-to-God like them.

Not trying to be obnoxious as it's always good to see someone get into/watch cycling as it's a niche sport in the US, but you'll find out that the more you learn, the more of a relatively worthless act those two are. Liggett in particular.

The only thing they have going for them is neither is as big of a turd as bob roll, but that's not saying much.

Sort of how if one submits themselves to ESPN long enough they ultimately realize Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith are a couple of clowns.

A bit worried about my velogames team at the moment. Actually closer to the top than I thought I'd be at this point, but I went boom or bust on the mountains and GC. Horner and Frank in particular, but for reasons beyond the fact they were in the second group on stage two. Perhaps Valverde will be my salvation...

And in the rare quad-post spectacular, what the hell is the Dawg hitting the deck for? Everyone knows that's Geraint Thomas' job.

No, I get that. I just appreciate the commentary about the features on the route (the historical landmarks and whatnot). I also really dislike a lot of what the next in line have to offer. Not much there. I know Vandevelde is new, but man, sometimes it's like I was trying to do commentary. Hopefully he'll pick some things up over the next few years.

And for the record, I've been watching cycling for about 15-16 years now so it's not like I'm new to the sport either. Would I appreciate some cutting edge analysis and hard hitting questions? Sure. But for me it's like baseball on the radio. You can't just talk baseball for three plus hours. You have to describe the scenery, tell a few stories, and balance this with commentary on the action. I think they do an excellent job at this. If I didn't have the picture on the TV I'd be able to imagine exactly what's going on in my mind. My $0.02.

.

To me the one upside with the pair is Sherwen's knowledge of France. He's a lifelong Francophile who is functionally fluent in the language and has spent an enormous amount of time there. Whether everything he spits out on the scenery comes from his own mind or the teleprompter, I'm not sure, but he still knows far more about these regions than most.

When it comes to the race itself, however, they don't offer much imo. Even the Schlanger/Gogo nbc b-team shames them. Last I heard them at least, which was last year.

I am in complete agreement here.

With that settled....can we get back to how it's possible the Dawg is scraping pavement out of his *** and Thomas isn't? :)

Karma catching up with Froome. Froome will be on Thomas wheel all day tomorrow so I hope they are careful.

Love to see Kwia get 4+ minutes on CF, AC, and Nibali. Get away with Canc sand Terpstra and no looking back!

Very fair question. My response is, give it time. Or marginal gains.

Additionally, 2 sections have been removed due to the weather. Shockingly, two sections with some name value... Orchies and Mons-en-Pavele.

Finally, with regards to P&P, I'm positive most of what they say with regard to the scenery is given to them from ASO.

Re: Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

Van deVelde is far better so far than he was during the Tour of California. Now if he could only stop saying "Fer sure" all the time.

That said, I'm so tired of the Phil and Paul show. How much better this tour would be listening to Carlton Kirby and Dan Lloyd for six hours a day. or even Rob Hatch and Maggie or Sean Kelly.

Re: Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

Froome down again for the second time today...and this time he hasn't been able to get back on his bike yet. He could lose some serious time today but right now he looks like he might be quite injured....

Looks like an abandonment...wow.

What a crazy day.

Re: Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

I'm sure the cycling purists (I won't say snobs - oops, I just did) will call me a heretic, but I hate the cobbles. To me, it would be like having a demolition derby as part of the F1 circuit - you take these insanely expensive, finely tuned machines and just smash them into each other for no other reason than to see how much damage you can do. Completely pointless.

Re: Your 2014 EPO Free Cycling Thread

Completely disagree. Paris-Roubaix and Ronde van Vlaanderen are the two best days of the cycling year. You have some case when it comes to Grand Tours. However, my counter argument is that any GT is looking for the best all arounder. Cobbles are part of cycling and any test of the best all arounder should test them as well.

If they're looking for the best all-arounder, then where are the mountain biking and cyclocross stages?
