Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Wow Eurosport dropps the ball big time! Conti attacks an a cat 2 50K from the line and bridges to a group with 3 teammates dropping Valverde and Purito. Eurosport comes on the air and DOESN'T mention it! Then they go immediately to adds. Finally when they come back, Harmon mentions that "the big news" is that AC is on the charge.

Anyway: GO CONTADOR!

And to think I opened this thread thinking, "nah...too early for me to spoil it for myself." D'oh! Well...now I'm most looking forward to watching this when I get home from work...

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

And now Tiralongo attacks with Contador on his wheel! Payback for the Giro stage from last year! Over a minute!

EDIT: And now 2 minutes!

OK, this is awesome! Valaverde has attacked and dropped Purito on the final climb, trying to bridge up to the remains of the Contador group, that contains 2 of his teammates.

Wow. Just wow!
'Berto drops Tira. All alone. Valverde has joined with Quintana and is pushing on with a Saxo in their wheels.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Valverde has dropped Quintana and caught his other teammate Inxausti and is cutting into AC's lead, but Purito is still over 2 minutes back. Also Froome (and presumably the rest) are 4 minutes back.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Grupo Valverde is now only 46 seconds back on 'Berto but Purito is still almost 3 minutes back.

Wow, 'Berto hangs on for the win by 7 seconds over Valverde. What a stage!

What a bummer. The guy is an unrepentant cheater who just wrecked Puritos only shot. The guy is Armstrong, but with a lot more style.

Very entertaining stage right there, though you're likely correct. Assuming Purito and most everyone didn't suck down a blood bag yesterday, of course. The one thing I'll give Contador is that the guy is indeed immensely talented regardless and certainly operates with a fearless mentality that makes for entertaining viewing. Don't get me wrong though -- still pathetic if he's juiced to the hilt again.

Sort of have to wonder about Valverde also. After a pedestrian TDF he sure looks to have "amazingly" stepped things up in the Vuelta...

Since I lurked here forever without saying much, for the record...I pretty much assume most everyone is on something or another. Frustrating and disappointing for sure, but I try to not let it ruin it completely for me as there's nothing I can do about it. Still a great sport that I enjoy watching, but yeah...won't be idolizing anyone anytime soon. I do sort of wonder how frustrating this must all be for (if they exist) teams out there that are running clean. After the humiliating era that preceded whatever we're in now...if they are running clean and trying to do the right thing there's no way to even prove it and they just have to sit there and take it up the can repeatedly. And yeah, yeah, I know what Vaughters keeps claiming, but I've got a whole theory on that one I won't even bother with at the moment...

sagard, you don't actually think Purito is clean do you? A rider who was know as a great punchy climber always dogged by 1 awful day in the BIG mountains and a terrible, I mean really terrible, time trial, suddenly at 33 years old becomes the best climber in the world while losing none of his punch and becomes a top 10 time trialist? I mean the guy lost 6:12 (4:18 to Nibali) in the last TT in 2010 and then only concedes a minute to AC this year? Thats a Pantani like turnaround.

Additionally, look at the teams he has ridden for -- ONCE, Saunier Duval, Caisse d'Epagne, and Katusha. At least two of those have terrible reputation and the others aren't know as basions of clean cycling.

Finally, yesterday, didn't look like a doped performance to me. It was tactics and guts. AC is likely doped, though I actually feel like he is fairly clean (not bread and water clean but...) we've seen what AC does when juiced (Etna) and he hasn't done anything like that this race.

No I'm under no pretense any of these guys are clean. Cheering for AC is like rooting for the Yankees. Purito is the AL central team.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Not sure thats the analogy I'd go with (especially considering I'm a Sox fan). More like Sky are the Yankees (or I guess BMC with the unlimted budgets) Saxo is more like Pujols or Hamilton. Best player on an OK team. Though I could see Purito being like a Cubs or a pre-2004 Sox, good but not quite able to win the big one.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Gilbert and the rest of the Belgians were beautiful in claiming the Worlds. Then my favorite Purito stunned them in Lombardia pulling away by 8 seconds from a group and outlasting them on an 8k rainy decent. And the season is now basically over! Lots of fun this year except le Tour. Hopefully someone can beat Contador next year.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

So Big George comes out and admits today that he doped. Supposedly Bottle has been suspended for his doping admission as well.

I believe six US riders received some combination of suspensions and/or stripping of past results. Don't have the report in front of me at the moment, but Hincapie, VdV, Danielson, Bottle and Zabriskie are five of them. Can't recall the sixth at the moment.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Lance will always be the champ for me those years. I've never considered it possible he was clean, so these shattering revelations don't bother me.

I certainly don't consider him any worse of a cheater than the rest of the guys after Lemond.

Time will tell if cycling actually tries to clean up, or if it just looks to go back to "modest" cheating.

Either way, I'll still watch.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Bobby Julich confesses to doping, resigns from his position at Team Sky.

This one stings, as Bobby was always my favorite American cyclist after Lemond.
