Yale Hockey 2017-2018 Season Thread

Re: Yale Hockey 2017-2018 Season Thread

Considering going to the UNH v Yale game this coming week...what end would UNH shoot twice? I think I get it looking at the map but it's not listed...thanks in advance!

Visiting fans usually sit in Aisle 11 where their team shoots twice, Aisle 2 across the way is “usually” full of home fans. Aisles 1&12 will put you behind Yale’s net for the 1st and 3rd periods.

Was out of the country for the weekend, glad to miss the carnage. The penalties taken and lack of a power play are getting worrisome. Need to right the ship in a very important game against UNH.

It was a disappointing weekend. I did not see the game vs. Princeton but did attend vs. QU. My observations:

Yale must stop taking penalties that are delivered with bad intent. Too many of the penalties were not from (or not only from) being beat on the ice, but were simply from an intent to commit them. A few years ago, Yale would never have done that. I think this is more about attitude than anything else. I hope Coach Allain helps the team to refocus and realize that you can be physical without trying to be a bully. It made me sad to watch.

QU's D made a few errors but the Yale forwards could not bury the shots. Shortridge was excellent and made two great saves, but something should have gone in. I think this has been a trend in the past few years and I am not sure what can be done about it.

With some credit to the QU D, most times Yale got a single shot and then lost possession. There were almost no second chances before the puck was moving back up the ice.

Yale showed almost no speed on Saturday. Perhaps they were tired from Friday and from the penalties. QU skated circles around Yale all night.

The power play was... not good. QU often closed down the time and space when Yale thought there was an opening.

Tucker is ok, but was lucky. Granted the team did him no favors and he kept them in the game, but QU also flat-out missed a couple of open nets and hit a post. That game could have been 6-0 easy.

Kemp's absence was noticed on Saturday. Generally, Kemp has been solid. Not having him impacted the pairings and play at the blue line.

I thought Hitch played well--smart and sharp. He is wonderfully consistent.

While the Big Green had their customary "bye" week for exams, I did watch the Princeton game. Yale was the better team in the first period but still ended 2-2 after one I believe. Princeton PP killed you guys as it enabled them to get a 5-2 lead which they barely held on for. I didn't watch the Saturday game but Princeton was fast team with speed through the neutral zone so maybe that did take some of the legs out of Yale for Saturday night..it probably took it out of themselves as well based on their loss to Brown.

Thanks to the Yale football team for allowing me to ignore the hockey games over the weekend. I'm glad I did.

My goodness, 'satch - you're a virtual one-man show on this thread.

I hope this is not indicative of what home attendance usually looks like?

Nice gritty win tonight. A very odd game that Yale easily could have lost. Hart with the hatty and O'Neil with two. The 3 on5 kill was key to the win. Two games in a row with PP goals is a step in the right direction on special teams. Still too much time spent in the box, although the fiver on Smith was questionable at best. Talk about freaky, Yale has an 8% powerplay and an 80% kill this year.

Glad to see that Yale got some goals last night. I was not able to watch either game. Any feedback on how Tucker played vs Union?

The team is still taking too many penalties, although the penalties are concentrated with only a few players, most notably Evan Smith and Sweezy.

Re: Yale Hockey 2017-2018 Season Thread

Tucker played well enough to win, but did give up at least one soft goal from the high slot that he should have had. Union missed at least 3 wide open nets during the game. Kazpersky looked much calmer Friday and plays a better positional game than Tucker who tends to get twisted into some weird positions during games.

Nice to get a win and score some goals. I had a uh-oh moment when Union tied the score in the 3rd. Penalties are a problem. PP issues may be getting better. Time for a winning streak.
