Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

Duluth has a very, very good first line in the Connollys and Fontaine. Not real deep scoring beyond that. Goaltending is weak. Power play can be deadly. They also had a lot of success early in the year winning a lot of tight games. I think they won something like 5 OT games in the first half.

Whoever plays UMD will have to keep the Connollys in check and get some pressure on their defense and goalie.

If they meet up with Yale the goalie will definitely be tested that is for sure.

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

Yale got what they deserved after finishing atop the Pairwise. Now it is time to deliver.

According to those on the "East Regional" thread and the "Weekest #1 Seed" thread Yale is not a strong #1 seed. Motivation for you guys?

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

Good luck to Yale in the NCAAs. You have an outstanding team that should be able to go far.

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

The last school I went to where we entered as the #1 seed resulted in national championship. Let's keep the streak alive :)

Looking forward to this weekend!

No....

What does motivate us is:
1) the fact that Air Force gave us our first loss of the year this year
2) last time NCAAs were in Bridgeport we lost to the lower seed (while Air Force as the lowest seed upset the #1 overall team)
3) we have never been to a Frozen Four (in the modern 16-team era)

I know that fans of other schools might see it as trite or the kind of thing that all players say, but the theme of unfinished business is something that the Yale players have been committed to since the untimely end of last season. All teams can and do lose their focus at points during what is the longest season in college sports, but now that the task of delivering on unfinished business is at hand, I know that Yale needs no outside form of motivation to propel them forward. All they need is their commitment to the goal and to each other and great success will follow

Now this is a surprise!

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

I turned on the selection show this morning at 11:30 fully expecting to see a remote of Yale's reaction to being selected as the number 1 seed. Instead, ESPN did a remote of Union and I don't mind saying that I was angry at the slight.

I just read this in the NH Register

NEW HAVEN — There was no selection show viewing party. No TV cameras. No hoopla.

A request by ESPN to televise Yale watching the NCAA hockey tournament selection show via live remote camera was turned down because it interfered with a scheduled Sunday practice session at Ingalls Rink.

That’s just how these Bulldogs roll.

But Yale did hold off the start of practice long enough to see it announced as the No. 1 overall seed for the tournament, and that Air Force will be its first-round opponent on Friday night at 6:30 in the East Regional at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.

And then, just 14 hours after pounding Cornell 6-0 and hoisting the Whitelaw Cup as ECAC Hockey champions in Atlantic City, N.J., the Bulldogs hit the ice and got back to business.

Apologies to ESPN.

Does anyone need any further evidence of this Yale team's level of dedication?

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

First, let me ditto all of the comments about the Cornell game and Rondeau. What a great time to play your best hockey.

And no disrespect to Cornell--they started the season with somewhat limited expectations and look what they accomplished.

Union and RPI--let's all represent the ECAC well. RPI, everyone in the ECAC will buy you drinks for the next five years if you can pull off the first round upset.

With regard to AFA, they are a strong team and you have to be impressed with how they turned their season around. That said, I feel there are two important aspects of Yale's loss to them that are not getting enough recognition: (1) Yale really collapsed in a way that made me think that two nights of high altitude hockey (not to mention an Olympic-sized rink) just caused their gas tank to run out of fuel with half a period to go. And (2) the coach made a decision to leave the young goalie in place, instead of bringing in Rondeau. Neither of those conditions will exist this time, and with Yale close to home they will have a strong fan base as well. I am looking forward to a good game, although my primary concern is the possibility of facing Union, who are playing really well now (notwithstanding their loss to Colgate in the ECAC second round which is so reminiscent of Yale's loss to Brown a year ago).

And lastly, I am also hopeful we can do well in the NCAA tourney so that we can have all of the negative posters on this thread shut up once and for all.

Amen.

Of course, if Yale loses to Air Force it indicates that ECAC is not a strong conference, since Denver losing to the AHA champion last year was just a fluke and Michigan losing the year before was just back luck and officiating, and no reflection on the increased parity in college hockey in recent years.

In case you cannot tell, I am being sarcastic.

I did like the Hockey East columnist's blog about how the East Regional is the "Putup or Shutup Regional." To summarize: The ECAC better put a team in the Frozen Four since their two best teams are in the regional, and UMD better make it out of the regional to prove that the WHCA is superior to the ECAC and AHA.

I know the WCHA was pretty dominate in the first half of the 2000s, but in the last 4 Frozen Fours I have been to, I have only seen a WCHA team win one game, and that was against an AHA team.

Re: Yale Hockey 2011 the Post-Season thread: AC, Harbor Yard, and ....

Just wanted to Bump the thread of the #1 seed to the front page. Would not be surprised to see Yale make it to the NCAA Championship game. I think Union may be their biggest problem in getting there though. Always wondered with the improvement in Atlantic Hockey why doesn't Connecticut start it's own Connecticut Cup tournament with the 4 Connecticut teams. Sure Yale would probably win a good share of the titles but the Beanpot is a little lopsided in outcomes and that does not seem to matter.

I have mentioned that in the past and i think it would be a great way to begin the annual non conference schedule. I think it would raise the profile of the UCONN and SHU teams within the state. SHU plays in an arena that is smaller than my high school rink in the next town, pretty pathetic.

SHU did play 5 games at HarborYard this year. They paired them with a Sound Tigers game to make a hockey doubleheader. But you are correct about their home rink. If they want to become a successful program they need to get their own facility.

A treat for Yale fans: My brother and Yale recruit Anthony Day co-host a podcast featuring Ken Schott from the Daily Gazette of Schenectady talking about the Tournament amongst other things. If you are interest you can find a link in my sig file. Thanks

Note: there is a tech mistake at the very begining of episode 11. It only lasts about 2 minutes. We will fix it tomorrow and repost.

Geez? Is anyone even going to the games this weekend? I know there is not alot to say about the unknown, but this thread is disappearing.

Any intel on the injured ? Would be nice to see Mason out there, although Borbounais id a feisty replacement!

My dad and I will be there - Section 115, Row H.
Went to practice today - definitely helped to ease my hockey withdrawal (a little). Watching our guys play each other is the best - great action at both ends of the ice. You can see how Allain has developed drills to make the passing we see each weekend complete second nature. The guys skated hared AND had a great time - grinning, cheering, totally pumped. Watching 4 on 4 played with both goals set on a face off circle is a hoot - a Yale game encapsulated in a tiny space, like a 33 record played at 78 (I'm aging myself here).
Kearney was particularly pumped up, as was Peel. Saw Young, Peltz on the ice as well. Wished I had had a roster - not sure Bourbonnais was out there, or Anderson.

I'll be there with another loyal Blue Bulldog fan in 105BB. I guess we're next to one of the penalty boxes. Does anyone know if Mason skated a practice today?

You will not know who is playing until game day, Allain is notorious about not tipping his hand.

Anyone listen to the Yale recruit make his podcast debut?
