Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Congrats to Yale on what record wise (I believe), was their best season ever.
While we didn't three-peat as Cleary Cup Champs, there is no doubt that this team has their eyes set on a much greater prize. It should also be mentioned that Union truly earned that Cleary Cup and congrats to them.
Our run to the Frozen-Four starts with a warm-up in the ECAC Playoffs. Certainly we all expect Yale to make it to AC, although based on last year and the recent outcome against Colgate, nothing should be taken for granted.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Maybe a stupid question, why is Fairfield University hosting the NCAA Division One Regional when they do not have a varsity hockey team?

I think because their men's and women's basketball teams play their home games at Harbor Yard Arena that Yale probably teamed with them to make the strongest proposal to the NCAA committee since Fairfield U knows the arena and the immediate area better.

Yale ans FFU are hosting the regional in Bridgeport in 2012 as well

Fairfield's contract with the Arena may have a clause that gives them exclusivity with regards to NCAA events, tthus requiring the name to be included. We'll see when Yale plays SHU there (or is it Uconn?) next year.

There is no exclusivity. Fairfield approached Yale a few years ago about possibly hosting an NCAA Ice Hockey event at Bridgeport. Fairfield doesn't sponsor men's ice hockey as a varsity sport, NCAA rules only permit schools to bid on an event if they sponsor the sport. Yale has always been interested in hosting NCAA ice hockey events, remember the 2004 Women's Frozen Four, it was supposed to take place at the New Haven Colisseum until the mayor shut the building down before the frozen four took place. It was moved to Providence. Bridgeport was a great match for the two schools.

Side note: The NCAA doesn't usually allow sites to host events in back-to-back years but the combination of other sites struggling to sell tickets (2010 East Regional at Albany avg 4000 per session) and Bridgeport's successful hosting of the Regional in 2009 (averaged over 8000 per session) the NCAA made an exception for 2011 and 2012.

The NCAA is very high on Bridgeport even if some hockey fans and Stewie Griffin are not.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qna1JHIsyVM

Tickets are still on sale. Bridgeport has sold about 3100 not including the 1600 alloted tickets for the four representing schools. Get your tickets soon if you're interested in going.

Just bought tix to Friday night's Quinnipiac - Brown game. May be the one and only time I'll be cheering for Q'piac.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Thanks, Bulldawg, but what isn't clear is why Fairfield is involved at all. If, as you say, Yale has always been interested, then what do they need Fairfield for? If it involves some sharing of costs and risks, then why would Fairfield want to be involved?

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Maybe because they are a Division One school that actually uses the building for other sports, that they have to be included as the "home" team host. Not sure if SHU has used the building for hockey yet?

Yes, SHU has played 5 games at the Arena this season and more are planned for next year.

Goblue, good question, my best guess is money. Once the financial guarantee to the NCAA is achieved, Fairfield and Yale will split an honorarium which could be in the ball park of between $50,000 and $100,000. The NCAA ultimately decides the honorarium based on how well they feel the hosts conducted the Regional. In 2009, from what I'm told, the honararium was around $75,000. $37,500 is not a bad pay-day for a mid major school like Fairfield.

If the guarantee is not met, then Fairfield and Yale would split whatever is owed to the NCAA. -so there is a sharing of risk. From what I hear, Yale handles all of the hockey stuff and Fairfield handles the logistics / facility side of things.

What you have to keep in mind is that before the 2009 Regional was ever played, there was no idea to know exactly how a Regional would be accepted "in Bridgeport". So I can understand why the schools wanted to share the risk. Now, knowing the success of the 2009 Regional, it's logical to ask why is Fairfield involved at all.

Side note: The guarantee budget number has been achieved for 2011. East Regional has sold approx. 3200 tickets, not including the 1600 for the four schools who compete. It should be a great Regional again.:)

If you are involved in the regional, let me be the first to say that you guys did a great job two years ago. If you are involved this year, please find a way to allow the fans to leave the arena between the two semi final games. It will help support local business (I know at the arena's expense) and give the fans more options during the wait. If you are not involved , please pass this along to someone who is, thanks for your consideration.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Great article! Thanks for the heads up. It actually puts a human face on the coach and the players while summarizing Yales incredible improvement in the past 5 years. Looking at the sidebar, it looks like it might be a hard copy glossy insert for the Daily News, I will try to get my hands on one. I think even the illustrious YaleDoc might have gotten some ink in the story.

If anyone needs proof about the animosity that the NoDak fans have against Yale, all you have to do is read the comments under the article. To take the time register for some other schools student newspaper blog just to slander it's team is about as low as you can go. No class at all.

Re: Yale Hockey 2010-2011 thread

Fabulous article. It was interesting see Coach Allain open up a bit about his coaching philosophy. Regarding the few loser UND fans who felt compelled to post comments about the article, methinks their protestations of not being bothered by losing to the boys last year ring hollow

Come on guys, no need to lump us all together.
It was one Sioux fan (same user name) that posted both negative comments. You're making it sound like there were dozens of separate fans posting on there saying negative things. :)

I know this, from dealing with Sioux fans. brianvf, mns, and surprisingly Dirty are actually good fans. Sloe Gin is debatable ;).However, apparently if you don't bow down to the greatness of Yale, you obviously hate them, their conference, etc. I tried to have a serious discussion about the program's status, and was told off. After that little incident, * 'em.

Enjoy your short post-season, boys.

Do Yale fans go out of their way to go onto North Dakota threads to make snarky comments about the great UND?...no. Why? Because we have lives, other interests, and maturity. That article that the fan felt compelled to s**t on was in a student newspaper for cryin' out loud. It's not about bowing down to the "greatness of Yale" (your words). It's about not being a jerk.

BH, We do not take offense to some good old fashioned trash talking, it just seems that "some" Sioux fans on here have a grudge against Yale because of the playoff loss last year. What do you think would happen if I posted a derogatory remark in a student newspaper article about Frattin? I would be crucified. The aggressive BS statements against our team by UND fans have carried over to other teams fans (negative bandwagon, if you will), so forgive us for being defensive of our program and our posters. If you would like to have a serious discussion about the programs status, please have at it in a civil manner, that is all we ask in this thread. I you took the time to read the story, it would give you a pretty good snapshot of the program, where it was, and what it has become. How about your thoughts on the story?
