Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Tough weekend for the Bulldogs. And now you have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see if you make the big dance.

While I always enjoy beating Yale, today's win was bittersweet for me due to the circumstances (for both teams). Because of that I can't even gloat. :(

But I need to say that I met YaleDoc this weekend and saw him after todays game down on the floor just outside the rink going around and congratulating the Bobcat players. That's a classy move Doc... kudos to you.

Best of luck to Yale if your season continues. My only hope is that we don't see you again until next season. ;)

Thank you for the kind words, Mark. I enjoyed meeting you and talking hockey; I just arrived home in the land of the cacti; I am going to get some much-needed sleep.......and of course watch the NCAA selection show (and I may not even look at the Notre Dame/Michigan score until that show). QU was well-represented by a large contigent of very knowledgable fans, and any one who takes the Bobcats lightly, does so at his own peril. For obvious reasons, I DO hope to see you again, but FIRST Yale does need to get to the BIG DANCE;.......as we all know, once you get into the tournament ANYTHING can happen !!!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Back home as well. First time Yale has gone 120 minutes without scoring since 2000. Out of respect for Yaledoc, I won't say anything about the CCHA championship going on now, but I'm listening avidly. I have hated every Notre Dame team in every sport ever since I can remember, but they have the chance to turn me around today.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

So it would appear, but we await the announcement @ 9 tonight.

The 1 vs 4 matchups are pretty much forced by the pairwise:
Providence: Quinnipiac vs. Canisius
Grand Rapids: Minnesota vs. Yale
Manchester: Lowell vs. Wisconsin
Toledo: Notre Dame vs. St. Cloud State

Wisconsin and St. Cloud State could be flipped for each other, but not for Yale. Minnesota gets Grand Rapids as it is closest to home for them, and they can't play a WCHA team. So it's pretty much forced for Yale to go there.
The 2/3 games are more in flux. New Hampshire has to play in Manchester, but that's about all that is for certain.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Anybody remember back to October 12th? Yale hadn't played a game yet. On that day St. Lawrence went into Kalamazoo and beat Western Michigan in overtime 4-3. So what? Suppose SLU hadn't scored that goal and the game had ended in a tie. Yale would be out and WMU would be in.... and it wouldn't be close. Yale would be the second team out, not the first, and WMU would be the 11th seed instead of out. That says a lot about the pairwise, doesn't it?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

With the most likely scenario being Grand Rapids, I will not be able to attend. I have made mention of having some sort of viewing party in the New Haven area on the Yale Hockey Facebook page. Details to be determined, I will update as we know more about the viewing schedule.

You're welcome!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Not only that, but 2-1 against SLU in the playoffs would have knocked us out. 4-0 against a TUC was absolutely critical. We owe you one at some point (some non-critical point for us, of course.)

It does tend to work both ways, though. For example, Holy Cross took the middle game of its playoff series loss to Mercyhurst, by one goal. Had they lost that game, they would have dropped from being a TUC, and as a result Yale's one goal loss to Holy Cross would not have mattered in that portion of the pairwise... and as a result of that, I believe (but have not bothered to confirm) that Yale would have had the bid clinched before the weekend.

No doubt Yale is in by the slimmest of margins. Didn't they win an OT game with 2.5 seconds left? If that had ended as a tie, they'd be out.

It doesn't matter now, though. What matters is Minnesota, 2pm Friday.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

what are the options for getting tickets to the West Regional game against Minnesota?

I know I can buy a strip for all 3 games, but that's fairly pricey ($72 for decent seats), and it means getting at least one -- maybe two -- games that do not really interest me. I did the full package in '98 when Yale played in Ann Arbor, but that was a short drive for me and the other two games involved teams of interest for me. This time it's a 3 hour drive and I have no interest in the other teams. So I really just want the 2pm game on Friday, and then if Yale wins, the regional final. Are there single game tickets for sale, either from the venue or ticketmaster or Yale?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I have great respect for the job that Coach Allain has done in bringing Yale back to national prominence, but, this was not cool. Sometimes you have to show up and take your medicine.

Disappearing act
Perhaps it was only fitting: The Bulldogs didn’t show up on the ice, so why should we have expected them to appear for a press conference?

Yale ditched the obligatory post-game presser following the consolation-game loss, with nary a word of explanation. Per colleague Nate Owen, who was live at the scene:

“[The media] waited for a few minutes… someone went back to find [Yale], said they were showering and would be out. Then they came back and said they had already gotten on the bus and left.”

Nate added that ECAC Hockey Assistant Commissioner Ed Krajewski, who MC’ed the weekend’s press conferences, “was pretty sheepish when he said they weren’t coming out.”

Head coach Keith Allain has developed a reputation as a tough quote – he is on the opposite end of the spectrum from Rensselaer’s Seth Appert, Brown’s Brendan Whittet, or Dartmouth’s Bob Gaudet in that respect – but, as frustrating as that may be to the media, tweren’t no crime.

No-showing one of the league’s major pressers, on the other hand, is unprofessional.

I have never had a personal problem with Allain, nor – to the best of my knowledge – has he with me, but this action deserves attention for its gross impertinence. Yale is a great team at a great school, with a great history, great recruiting, great coaching, a great support staff, and great local support as well. I wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if I criticized any of these aspects of the program.

But deliberately hanging Krajewski, the league he represents, and the media – most of whom traveled great distances to cover Allain’s team, among others – out to dry… well, that’s a great disrespect.

Per the Yale sports information department, Allain had no comment on the issue on Monday morning.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

You're never as bad as you look when you're losing and never as good as you look when you're winning. Yale's last two weekends show the high and low of what they can do. This team doesn't have nearly the firepower of, say, the 2010 team, but probably better defense. The great thing about the playoffs is that anything can happen. The troubling thing, of course, is that Yale was 1-5-2 against the teams in this tournament, which is a much better indication than their .500 TUC record. That said, the five losses (and one of the ties) were all against the other two ECAC teams, who we won't be playing until Pittsburgh, or next year. Bottom line: are two wins in Grand Rapids likely? No. Possible? Hell yeah. And fans live on hope.

Not cool is an understatement. For a sport and a league that are constant need of salesmanship and championing, we need to ask more of our coaches. When you coach at a Yale or any other school, you become an ambassador for the sport and are often the most visible person in the local community, where the next wave of players, coaches, media, and fans are continually groomed.

If Coach Allain doesn't get this, then perhaps his Athletic Director should see to it that he does.
