Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Further to our discussion yesterday, LTsatch, I liked Fallen's quote in the NHR today: “We’ve been working on being more confrontational with our opponents, being tougher to play against.” They'll need to keep building on that confrontational attitude. Wish it worked to be confrontational with the refs - Some of the fans over near me nearly broke down the glass and KA was clearly irate about some of the calls against Yale. We had our best PP success of the season, so when the calls went our way we capitalized.
On to Cornell and Colgate. Big Red will be looking for redemption, and it's never easy at Lynah.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Incredible weekend in New Haven for anyone who roots for the Bulldogs. It was especially emotional to be there and watch my younger brother in the blue and white. Every time I am in Ingalls I just want someone to pinch me. It was great to watch the games, hang out with my brother and his teammates, and meet so many Yale fans. It was fun eating pizza after the Harvard game and watching all the alumni congratulate my brother and the other guys that were there. Mini celebrities.

As for the hockey, when Yale can roll there lines and Malcolm is on his game they can beat any team in the Country. The game against Harvard was a dominate and commanding performance. I have to give a ton of credit to the coaching staff. They have recruited a great bunch of guys. The culture of the team is great and all of the guys I have met the last two seasons are just as good people as they are players. Miller is a great captain. Fallen might be the best player in the ECAC. His feet are so incredible. He reminds me of Brian Campbell. He is always the best skater on the ice, sneaky cannon of a shot and a solid defender.

I cant wait to see what this team can do. #proudbrother

anyone have 2 extra tickets for the road game against Princeton on Feb 23rd? Looking for two seats together. Princeton site has individual seats but no pairs together.

Also, great weekend in New Haven! Bulldogs with two huge wings. Ingalls was ELECTRIC saturday night!

Well you all know how down I was on this team after the Holy Cross game, but I think once again Allain has the boys playing their best hockey of the year coming down the stretch. This team is also so much different than the Yale teams of the past few years in my opinion. While our forecheck is strong, we suddenly have some size and physicality on defense. In years past we would be clearly outsized by Dartmouth and struggle with their bigger and more physical play combined with good speed (as opposed to Cornell with size but no speed). Now however, we seem to have maintained great speed and in the process have added a much more physical element which the team is able to sustain for 3 periods. There is no doubt we are playing our best hockey of the year presently. Let's see if it can be maintained for the upcoming road trip prior to what promises to be an exciting final few weeks of the season.

One last thought. How great is it that the top 2 teams in the ECAC are separated by less than 8 miles and have yet to face each other this year!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Another great weekend of Yale hockey. I am excited to watch the game on the NBCSN on Friday and to travel to Colgate on Saturday to check out the game. Any other Yale fans headed to Colgate?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I like Yales chances this weekend for another 4 points, Cornell for whatever reason just hasn't gotten out of the gate. They are always tough at Lynah though. I hate to say that I really am ignorant about Colgate's personnel, but they did hang a 5-1 victory on QU. Yale needs to continue to be aggressive on the forecheck and the d has to keep steering the play and the pucks wide of the Yale goaltender.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Interesting weekend PWR-wise. If UMass and Holy Cross stay as TUCs, this weekend Yale will cross the 10 TUC barrier. If I've got this right, if Yale can get 4 points, then they can climb past New Hampshire (barely) to a potential #1 seed via the TUC comparison unless RPI gains TUC status as well. They can also get there if RPI comes in but Holy Cross drops out. All of this is ridiculously premature, of course, but it's fun to puzzle out anyway.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

GB78 You are correct about it being premature, but it is fun trying to envision the possibilities. The scenarios scare me sometimes when I compare Yale's whole record to the surrounding teams on the list. It almost seems that they would have to win out the season to maintain their status in the PWR. Seems like a paper tiger type situation in which they are not as they seem, ranking wise. I hope I am completely wrong, but have an inkling that losing 3 or 4 of the games left would drop us right down the ladder. This is all my hunch and not based on statistical analysis in any way.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Roughly speaking, see http://siouxsports.com/hockey/rankings/rpidetails.php?teamid=31 Yale needs to win 8 out of its last 11 to keep its RPI at today's level. The RPI is mostly going to determine Yale's placement (assuming they don't really fall apart) but there are some interesting PWR comparisons with UNH (just above them RPI-wise) and NoDAK and Miami (just below them). http://siouxsports.com/hockey/rankings/pwrdetails.php?teamid=31 Most of the other comparisons are almost surely going to go whichever way RPI goes. But, as always, Just Win Baby always keeps the Elis in good shape.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

If you don't have or can't watch the NBC Sports Network coverage of tonight's matchup at Cornell, WYBC has you covered with our radio broadcast live from Lynah Rink.

Pregame coverage, including an interview with Coach Allain, will start at 7:15 EST at WYBC.com/listen. We hope you'll tune in!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Hell yeah, Bulldogs!! Way to fight til the end.

Some day I'll have to go to Lynah just to see what Hell will be like

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

As has been the case in recent years Yales team speed was the difference. Cornell is huge in size but are just a little too ungainly to score enough goals. The save by their man in the third was incredible. Great game, glad we were on the winning side.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

And Yale advances, very tenuously, to 3rd in the pairwise. And we're still short TUC games because Holy Cross dropped out. (Yay!) Very tiny changes can move Yale around from 3rd to 6th, so don't count on this 3rd standing. But they're playing well. And LT is exactly right about Gotovets' save with under 20 seconds to go. Amazing gutsy play.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

I would think that games like this would give NBCSN a reason to continue their coverage of college hockey. I have watched more college and pro hockey on that network in the past two weeks, than I have watched in the past two years. Never knew Keenan was an SLU man. Was it me or did the NBCSN announcers seem like Cornell homers?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

How about a shout out to the Bulldogs improving every game defense? Our forecheck was great, as usual, but our defense is becoming a force. And Stu Wilson is anatural goal scorer, which is something we have lacked on the 3rd line in the Allain era.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

CGYF, I would say that the young D-corps had a little too much time spent trying to clear pucks from behind and next to Malcolm tonight, found my self yelling "just clear it" instead an extra or short armed pass was made resulting in the turnover. Given, Cornell is a HUGE team, and the way the Yale defense survived their physicality is a testament to them. They are SO much better on defense this year. It is the difference between being a good team and a great team, this team is starting to look great, without their stars contributing greatly. Miller was beaten up badly tonight.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

In my experience, neutral commentary usually sounds like it's against you. Hodge, in particular, did note that two penalties called on Yale weren't penalties, so that is not a very homerish thing to do. And I thought he parceled out praise and criticism pretty equally. The one thing that does happen is that announcers have to raise their voices over crowd noise which will make calls for home team goals louder than calls for road team goals. That reminds me: what was Schaefer complaining about on Agostino's goal? Anybody know?

I have a good friend who is a huge Rangers fan who is convinced that Doc Emrick hates the Rangers. As an NHL watcher with no rooting interest, I simply don't ever hear it, but nothing I say convinces her. She can criticise the Rangers, the home announcers can criticise the Rangers , since both of those come from love, but all neutral criticism is hate.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Way to go Yale! Great to see the press Balch and Wilson are getting - highly deserved.
Kudos to wybc.com - I was en route from LaGuardia to Woodbridge during the game and listened on my iPhone. Good play-by-play coverage and balanced commentary. Made it back in time for OT and got to see Wilson's goal on TV - truly a team effort.
Go Blue! May the team keep up the intensity for Colgate tonight.
