Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Goaltending and composure. They had them, we didn't. The turning point may have been Quinnipiac's timeout early in the first, down two goals. They settled down and we took a series of stupid penalties and untimely mistakes. Credit to Quinny and their 12 seniors who played with poise and patience. Learn from it and give your best shot at The Bank on Feb. 22 on NBC. Ignore the lessons and suffer the consequences.

I nominate this for best post ever. And Yale just kept unraveling as the game wore on. We have to get the goaltending fixed or it will be our downfall. You could see how much Hartzell being a rock in the net helped QU get their legs underneath them.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Kudos to QU. That said, I think the "officials" also gave QU alot of momentum in the late first and early second on some iffy calls that changed the face of the game. No excuse for Yales later penalty antics. QU is one of those teams that adapts to the opponenet and just wears them out, reminds me of the good cornell teams, with much more speed and a goalie that is over half the size of the net opening. He is a good goalie, but his team defense is better.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

A great big "thank you" to the Princeton goon who took Malcolm out. As the old saying goes...if you can't beat them, beat them up. And for those of you who say it wasn't intentional, maybe not, but it was stupid, unnecessary, and careless. I was right behind the net and the Princeton player didn't try very hard to stop before taking Malcolm's legs out.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

After a few anxious emails, let me be the optimist of the group. Maricic is experienced, but rusty. Assuming Malcolm's out, he's got time to get back into shape, and Yale's record has given them some wiggle-room, though not a lot. To maintain a top 10-level RPI, they need to win about 4 or 5 of their remaining regular season games, and then at least get to Atlantic City and not lose two. It's still doable. Facing adversity is what good teams do.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Maricic has played some big games over the past few years. The 2-2 tie @QU last year comes to mind as does the 4-2 W over Cornell at Ingalls in Nov. 2009 (Maricic's first collegiate start). From my vantage point, he seems like a bit of a slow starter but settles in as the game develops. I combed through his game logs over the past three seasons and came with following save percentages by shot number faced:

Shot faced # -- SV%
Shot 1 -- 0.810
Shot 2 -- 0.905
Shot 3 -- 0.857
Shot 4 -- 0.810
Shots 5-10 -- 0.931
Shots 11-15 -- 0.973
Shots 16+ -- 0.907

So the numbers support the notion that he is a little shaky when he enters a game but settles as the game progresses. This suggests that the challenge for the team will be maintaining composure/intensity even if the other team gets on the board early. By my eye, Malcolm has been more consistent throughout games, despite ultimately producing career numbers similar to those of Maricic.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Excellent analysis, Yale 13. Thank you for sharing that. By my eye, Maricic's body language is that of an non-confident athlete. He doesn't see the puck as well as Malcolm and he fights it a bit when he sees it. But, perhaps he will settle in and develop some confidence knowing that Malcolm is not going to be coming into the game when he makes a mistake.

Maricic's posture is very different from most ice hockey players' - I wonder whether part of that is that his first puck+stick sport is roller hockey. He is very accomplished in that realm - don't I recall he played for a national level team over the summer?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Bit of a longshot tonight, but an interesting one. Yale currently trails BC in the PWR comparison 3-0: RPI, ComOpp and TUC. (Their tie obviously leads to a wash H2H.) If Harvard were to somehow beat BC tonight, though, Yale would then lead in RPI and ComOpp, taking the comparison for the moment. (Even a tie would take the ComOpp). This wouldn't by itself move Yale from its current PWR #7, but it would help a lot for the future if they can keep winning. So, for one night only, Go Harvard!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey - 2012-2013

Qpac reminds me of the Yale 09-10 team. They keep coming at you and always have the confidence knowing they will come back if down during a game.
Yale could have won it all in "10" except for Backmans' foolish injury and if Yale had a Goalie like Hartzel that year, they wouldn't have needed Backman.
How does Yale end up with 2 Senior goalies every year? I guess there isn't any way to break the 2 recruited the same year unless they can only carry two goalies...

Big thanks to the Gentleman who made the donation for the free All Access Games in HD.

Actually 2010 was the year that Yale beat NoDak 3-2 and then lost to BC 9-7 in the regionals so I'm not sure if Backman would have helped in the BC game unless the plan was to win 10-9!! But your point about the Yale goalies is correct, and with 2 seniors departing this year, I am thinking that 2 more goalies will come in together in next year's freshman class.

You are welcome; I am very thankful to be fortunate enough to give back to my Alma Mater. Ironically the All-Access was out of commission for the first 5 minutes of the Princeton game, so we were spared having to see Jeff get injured !!!

I was there. It was missable (as was the first Princeton goal 20 seconds into the game.)

But I wanted to second the thanks. As someone who can only make two or three home games a year, the HD coverage is really quite good, especially compared some other places I could name (rhymes with Tollgate) who charge and then give you SD which still freezes. The student commentators are... enthusiastic.

I agree entirely, Blue.......I am VERY pleased with Videocast quality. I couldn't believe (er, well yes I can) how snarky the QU fans were about everything from Adlon's voice to Max's knowledge of the game of hockey. Well, I have a feeling that if you took the College Board scores of the 3 most offensive Qpac critics, they would fall short of each of members of the Bulldog team. I suspect also that Addie, as a Blake (MN.) hockey alumna herself, could skate rings around those those idiots. IMHO, Addie and Max do a great job !!!

yaledoc -- you are responsible for creating YAA?
That is AWESOME. Thank you!!
Just found it Friday and watched the end of the Princeton game and most of the Quinnipiac debacle. It was really wonderful to see Ingalls again. Wish I could hear a bit more of the band, the YWWB was always my favorite part of being there (I hear they don't let them on to the ice after the 2nd period anymore).

I was beginning to have hope that this would be our frozen four year and I hope we survive Malcolm's injury. If Yale makes it to Toledo or Grand Rapids, I'll definitely be there.

Yes, Matt, and I feel very blessed to have been able to make the gift; most importantly, it was made to honor the memory of the late Mandi Schwartz, a kind and inspirational young lady who touched in a very positive way the lives of the Yale Hockey family specifically, and the greater Yale Community in general.

I know I found your broadcast to be a good thing; thank you for helping the university to put it together.

A heartfelt thank you from the "enemy" as well. There are more important things than hockey and I was touched by the Mandi Schwartz story. I think it's great that you've done this to honor her.
