Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Just compared the Yale lineups from the two Brown games. Agostino, Weberg, and Killian played the first game, they were replaced by Peltz, Ruffalo, and Carraccio all freshman. Obviously Agostino is injured, not sure why the other two were in for the first time since the early season scrimmage, as noted in Mike Hutter's post the three freshman replacements in the second game did look a little lost on the ice as should be expected in their first real game. Hopefully there were reasons other than injury for keeping Weberg and Killian off the ice, they had been playing very well since arriving at Yale.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Kenny Agostino has been invited to the 30-player US WJHC camp. This camp will serve as the final tryout for the US WJHC team (which will have a 22 person roster). It would be a great boon to the Yale hockey program if Kenny was selected to the final roster, and I hope his injury isn't too serious.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Jason, save your editorializing for your own website, no need to antagonize the fans here. We appreciate the videosan but a good journalist does not bait fans.

Please explain how I antagonized the fans. I am a fan. Been this team's biggest proponent at times. Unless you follow your coach with blind faith and think him infallible, your comment makes no sense.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Now that you are publishing your interviews online you have a journalistic responsibility IMO, if you are just an amateur, my apologies. The fact that you are allowed into the locker room and interview players and coaches leads me to believe that you have press credentials. If you are going to editorialize along with your videos, you should be prepared for a response from people who disagree with you. Does Allain like the press, I don't know? From the interview which you called him whiny, he patiently answered your questions in a way that a coach ****ed off about a tough loss would answer questions. Calling him out as whiny on a national message board is surely going to endear you to him next time you need an interview. I do know that whenever I have spoken to him, he has been a gentleman.

Journalistic responsibility to do what? I think my first responsibility is to tell it like it is. People will either read it or won't. Which part is it that antagonized you, calling him whiny or saying he never gives credit. The latter is in no way editorializing.

I have no issue with people disagreeing with me. It happens all the time. But that's not what you did. You said I "antagonized the fans." I still do not understand how that is the case. You are clearly enamored with Allain so it upset you. That's fine. But don't say I antagonized the fans when I said nothing about them.

If you call those answers patient, you don't watch a lot of pressers. Allain is not much different after a win. Every other coach in the league is more polite and appreciative of the media, even after losses. Before that interview even started, Yale SID Steve Conn proposed we all go somewhere more quiet to which Allain refused and said "I can hear fine." Bear in mind it was very noisy as you can tell on the video and per usual, he spoke as quietly as possible. So, if you just want to give a coach credit for just being there rather than avoiding press entirely, then he is your guy. I don't know what else to say. I can't help but notice than no one else on the board voiced any issue with what I said. People who follow the team closely know what Allain is like. If you think I went over the line with "particularly whiny" then maybe you are right, and I will apologize. But I think you are going a little overboard with the reaction. I'm not that far off-base.

The amateurism thing is up for debate. I do have credentials, but I also am not paid by anyone. I do this out of my personal love for ECAC Hockey and thus I feel a little more entitled to editorialize. Grew up a Yale fan with season tickets for many years. Dad is an RPI grad. Been around this league for a long time and Allain is one of a kind. As a fan and semi-pro journalist, I respect the guy immensely as a coach. What he is like with the team in private remains cloaked in secrecy, but whatever he does seems to work. In person, at least with the press, he is cold, dismissive, off-putting, and at times just plain rude. Just like it is his prerogative to act as he pleases, I think it is my prerogative to editorialize.

In this instance, I thought both Yale and Brown had played better games than they had in Yale's win on Thursday, with Brown simply earning the victory. Allain chose instead to give the impression that his team had failed at everything and lost themselves the game. That just was not the case. Now, coaches can use the media to send messages to their team, but he was also sending a message as a bad loser in my opinion.

I have done nothing but write flattering stories about Yale over their historic success the last 2 seasons. A western editor for this very site initially would not publish the story I wrote on Yale's victory over NoDak in the tourney 2 years ago because she thought it was just me gushing over my favorite team. That was until Jim Connelly, who was actually also at the game, set her straight.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Good thing Billy Martin didn't coach hockey ;) Thank you for your considerate response and apology. I don't blindly follow the coach either, I was his worst critic during the "goalie by committee" year but he seems to be getting it done. I understand that he did not give Brown credit ( I also agree that they outplayed Yale 4 out of six periods this year). Maybe "What did you think of Browns play tonight?" might have cleared that up. I have only been on this board for three years now and maybe have not quite earned my bones yet, but this was the first time that someone who is a bonafide hockey reporter ( as I know now) has come on this thread and editorialized about the team or the coach as far as I can remember. I traveled from New Haven to the game Saturday night and may also have been a little thin skinned about the loss after such a nice comeback, and also apologize for flying off the handle. Now please do me a favor and go on the Brown thread and tell them what a talented punk Farnham is. :p

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

OK, I guess I will be the first to address the loss to UMASS, as in the SHU loss, this is unacceptable. This team either needs to run the table for the rest of the regular season or build and improve slowly enough to win the ECAC Championship to make the final sixteen, which is not still out of reach. Unless they return healthy and rejuvenated, I don't see that happening.

Waterloo (USHL) Defenseman Mitch Witek commits to Yale for next year.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Thanks Stan, look forward to the game, the Russians played very well last year and have certainly scheduled some tough opponents this year, good luck to them on their trip through North America.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I think Merrimack is back down to earth now after their great start. I think Union and Cornell will be fighting it out for the league this year. Colgate is looking great too and QU has made a nice rebound as well.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Nice. I understand that the announcement naming the final team will be made at 10:30 this morning. Good luck, Kenny!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Finally! Enough Christmas cookies - time to get back to the Whale for the exhibition game against the Russian traveling team tonight, and Bentley on New Year's Day. Anyone else planning to be there?
Happy holidays to all!

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I will be there tonight but will miss Bentley and QU due to other commitments, hopefully we have a better second half, I think an ECAC tournament win will be our only hope of post season play, unless Yale somehow runs the table in the second half.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

The game tonight has been delayed until 8pm because the Russians were late arriving. You can't trust those **** commies.
