Yale Bulldogs 2023-24

The goals in today's exhibition vs McGill came from Stainton, Hartje, and DiAntonio x2 in the 1st period and, in the 3rd, Stainton again and Sedgewick. Yale kept them to the outside - Dukaric made 2 saves, and Wendell 5, with a 6-0 score. Some great passing in the offensive zone too!

According to EliteProspects and CollegeCommitments, beyond this year, Yale has ~11 student-athletes so far recruited to come in the next 2-3 years. Two members of this year's team graduate in the spring, both being forwards, and 11 members graduate next year - because of those who waited to start college with the Covid year.

Two of the recruits are goalies, 3 D, and 6 F (their hockey programs are Boston Jr Eagles, Burlington Jr Barracudas, East Coast Wizards, Little Caesars, Mid-Fairfield, Mississauga Hurricanes, Nepean Jr Wildcats, and NJ Ironbound). Two recruits, Molly Boyle and Hannah Weyerhaeuser, were recently named to the USA U18 Selection Camp for 2024 U18 Worlds.

Here are the recruits for future years (with their potential year to arrive at Yale*) -
F: Camryn Bell (2024), Emma McGowan (2024), Avery Peters (2024), Kennedy Walker (2025), Hannah Weyerhaeuser (2025), Maeve Casey (2025 or 2026 if post-grad?)

D: Sophia Levering (2024), Isabella Paolucci (2024), Cassandra Barnes (2025), Molly Boyle (2025)

G: Naomi Baechler (2024), Natalie Frey Perusse (2024?), Emeline Grennan (2025)

*from EliteProspects, CollegeCommitments, and NeutralZone

It looks like Lee and Shaughnessy aren’t on the roster – they will be missed this year!

DiAntonio had a great exhibition last week. Last year she played on the line with Dalton and Welch, and now she, Hartje, and Stainton are the starting line; on the powerplay, it’s Hartje, Bargman, DiAntonio, Ray, and Poniatovskaia starting off. Poniatovskaia looked excellent in the exhibition too.

A couple recruits to add:
F: Sage Smith (2025) from Shattuck St. Mary's

D: Alexis Fields (2024) from FL Alliance

Season starts tomorrow!

That was a nice shutout win tonight!

It is great to see Higuchi and Stainton have a bunch of playing time already. Higuchi showed an offensive spark and had one assist, while Stainton looks skilled and strong. Dukaric and the defense are working well together. The goals were pretty!

Also, Princeton looked great, dangerous on the rush and deserving their ranking. The announcer said that this is the first time the ECAC has had 7 teams ranked in the top 15.

This afternoon's game was a tough loss. Quinnipiac came out strong. The 1st period ended 4-0. The Bulldogs clawed back to 4-3. In the last 2 minutes, Quinnipiac scored 2 empty-netters. The first one was where Quinnipiac was on the powerplay (so, 5 x 5 with an empty net).

Stainton's goal making it 4-3 in the 3rd was great. Hartje put in so much effort throughout. Poniatovskaia looked excellent again.

At first some Yale passes weren't connecting - the players were a bit rushed. Our offense picked up momentum by the 2nd, though, took their time, and connected more. Kudos to Yale for not giving up and to the Bobcats for the win.

Finally catching up on the weekend's results and watching the games. Nothing particularly earth-shattering. Yale is at a tremendous disadvantage going up against a Qpac team in mid-season form. I can't believe the Ivies still have to deal with this crazy disadvantage year after year. Let's not forget goalies need some work to be in top form as well. Yale got amazing goaltending on Friday and spotty on Saturday. That really was the difference in the two games. So again, not that surprising.

Interesting that they split up the Hartje/Ray/Bargman line that was so successful last year. Hartje has two new wingers as she seems to every year. She carried the offense with the puck both Friday and Saturday nights and dominated. She is clearly expected to carry the team and make those wingers around her better. People talk about Fillier not having the support but I might say that Princeton probably has more than Yale. Both teams can really do some damage this year. It'll be interesting to see how much sharper they are one month from now.

Qpac looked like they usually do. Strong on the puck, super well-coached. And sharp. That said, Yale only gave up 22 shots to them (before the empty net goals). Dukaric will rebound from this outing.

Tedlasso, from watching on Friday I too thought that some players around Fillier (like Issy Wunder) played well though it was a shutout.

Thanks, LongGame - Fields looks very good; looking forward to 2024!!

Reiter is now at center, and Boucher has moved up to center the second line, and Trummer the third.

Yesterday had good scoring from the defenders - Bojarski and DeCorby; I hope that they keep that going!

It was great to see so many goals (8-0) vs Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon including a varied array of players.

On Friday, Emma Seitz scored her first professional goal for MoDo in the 2nd period!

Well, Cornell controlled that game, looking stronger and getting better chances. It was a 6-1 loss for Yale.

After DiAntonio scored on a 5-on-3, making it a 2-1 game, Cornell later scored, in the middle of the 2nd period, on its own 5-on-3 the other way. Generally Cornell took back the momentum fast after the Yale goal. Regarding the first-years, Rauf and Higuchi seem good together, and I think defender Buenzow has been solid.

Two recruits for Yale, Molly Boyle (2025) and Hannah Weyerhaeuser (2025), both East Coast Wizards, are selected to go to Zug in January with USA's U18 team.

I look forward to attending the games vs Union and RPI. We'll see whether Goode is back, after she left the ice in pain at Cornell. Hoping that she's better, and it's so helpful to have at least two seniors in the lineup; Goode gives nice energy to the team.

Things seemed to be clicking much more in the win vs RPI than in the bumpy win before that vs Union. Yale had more offensive zone time. Now on to St. Lawrence and Clarkson.

Unfortunately Goode is out injured. The line with Bargman, Hartje, and Ray is back together and is scoring.

Game times update for Dec and early Jan based on Yale and other teams’ websites (blue: home)-
at Brown Sat Dec 2 3PM
vs Brown Sun Dec 3 3PM
at Penn State Fri Dec 8 6PM
at Penn State Sat Dec 9 2PM
vs Northeastern Tue Jan 2 6PM

It would be great if Dukaric and Wendell are a goalie tandem this Friday. Last season, they each took half the game (6-0) at St. Anselm. Yale plays Sacred Heart on Fri and Quinnipiac or UConn on Sat. Let's go, Bulldogs!!

I expect that Yale relishes getting to play Quinnipiac today.

Some milestones to celebrate from yesterday vs Sacred Heart:
- first collegiate start, shutout, and assist for Phillips
- first 6-point game and short-handed goal for Gilkyson
- first collegiate goal and multi-point game for Reiter
- and first game-winning goal for Stainton

Returning to action at Brown next Saturday! It's difficult being shut out by Quinnipiac, but it may continue Yale's learning and development this year.

Yale has recruited Mackenzie Allen (page announcing the verbal commitment, 2024). She's a defender from Ontario playing with the Burlington Jr Barracudas.

I also noticed that Yale's roster is listing Avery Muhn, originally on D, as F. She hasn't been playing; I wonder whether she'll be worked into games at that position.

Hartje continues to be outstanding - as well as Gracie Gilkyson. I'm concerned about an injury to Stainton in the 1st period today. I got to the game just before they paused for that.
