Worst seasons of all time?

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

Oh yeah: in '05-'06 Tech went on a 231:20 goalless streak that spanned four games.

When we scored that slumpbusting goal against UND, the Mac went off like we just won the MacNaughton. We lost that game something like 8-1, but we didn't care.

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

Not in keeping with the exact theme of this thread, but if you want to see some of the all time bad seasons, check out some of the women's DIII teams. Without going through them all to see the worst, I know there are some epically bad teams out there. Some time in the recent past one of them was noted in a thread I followed and it was hard to believe it was an NCAA sanctioned team or sport it was so bad. I wish I could remember the team but IIRC it was around the 2002/2003 season.

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

RPI's 3-19 season in 65-66 was painful to watch.

Their three victories were against a club team (Penn) and two D-3 schools (Middlebury and Hamilton). RPI goalie, Dick Greenlaw, set a record for saves in a 9-0 loss to BU which I think still stands. (He was named one of the 3 Stars despite gving up nine goals.)

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

Modern Times DIV I of schools that have not actually folded their programs and were in top leagues..

Northeastern 2005-2006 Hockey East 3-24-7

Northeastern 1969-1970 ECAC 3-20

But it could be noted that over a 5 season span from

1967-68 to 1971-72 the club was 29-96-1.

Which might be the worst 5 year span ever in DIV 1 Hockey!

NU of course hired a real coach in 1972 season ex bruin and NHL Hall of Fame Defender Fern Flaman and by 1982 Northeastern was in the Final Four finishing 3rd.

Merrimack College also has compiled horrible records in DIV 1
since winning 2 National Championships in DIV 2 in the late 70's and early 80's.

In 1985 they moved to Hockey East and they seldom have had a 10 plus win season since.

Iona College, Fairfield Collage both of the MAAC each spent 10 years in DIV I after spending >50 in DIV 2. They later played in Atlantic Hockey if they won 100 games combined in those 20 years collectively I would be surprised. Both folded their DIV 1 programs in the early 2000's

I think M.I.T. Women's hockey went winless/tieless and only scored single digits in goals for the entire year...

EDIT: 2 Winless years actually

How about Plymouth State's women's hockey one win in four seasons?

My first year at Bemidji State was hockey team's worst going 4-26-4 in 2000-2001.

From 98-99 to 02-03 and under two different coaches (Tim Watters, then Mike Sertich), Tech went 39-138-11, including the 4-34 season that finally ended Watters' tenure (though not until nine games into the following season for some reason ).

Shut it down:

http://www.uscho.com/schedules/team.php/mit-engineers/womens-college-hockey/team,135/season,20012002/gender,w.html

They were out-shot 104-2 in their first ever game! And it didn't get much better from there - shots were 78-2 for their last of that season! They were outshot on the season 1165 to 105 and out-scored 226-2!

I believe they did shut it down. This is the team I was thinking of in my post. 17-125-3 before they finally decided enough was enough and called it quits. The article refers to 10 seasons and another 36 losses, but the history tab shows just 8 seasons. Hard to believe people this smart thought that needed to go on that long.

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

I thought AIC would have qualified for this but they never had as bad seasons as some of these. Even their worst year they only gave up more than 6 goals once. They had only 4 wins but not as many losses as some quoted here.
By the way the Mexican Junior team just lost a couple of games by 25-0 and 25-1. They finished with 4 goals for and 77 against, scored 1 PP goal but gave up 3 SHG while on the PP.

Wow, I actually remember some of the celebratory posts during/after that game.

Re: Worst seasons of all time?

Union's 1998-1999 season was particularly dreadful. 1-19-2 in the ECAC and 3-26-3 overall. Thankfully, those dark days seem to be far away in the rear view mirror at this point.
