Jimjamesak - You were dead on with Asia. Three teams in the round of 16. That's crazy. First time.

Interestingly (or maybe not, I dunno, sue me), for every group that has completed, one UEFA and one non-UEFA has made it through, and it's likely to occur for G too. (3 Asia, 1 NA, 1 SA, 2 Africa among the non-UEFA.)

I think people have slept on South Korea, Japan, and Australia. They’ve been pretty consistent teams, reaching the World Cup consistently, and their leagues are pretty darn good. The J-League and the K-League are arguably the best two leagues in Asia (and arguably better than MLS) while the A-League is not as good but still up there.

It’ll stay that way as Brazil has already clinched advancement.

This is the first time the six inhabited continents will be represented in the knockout stage. This even works if you follow the Spanish language model of five inhabited continents.

Although because the whole thing hinges on the Aussies, the only other time it was possible is in 2006 when they reached the round of 16, but then no one from Asia qualified.

Of course, if you subscribe to the theory that there are really only four continents, then it already happened.

I say there's only one continent and some reallllllly big lakes.

Brazil without yellow just looks weird. Even weirder that wearing their yellow would provide more contrast with Cameroon’s green than their blues they’re wearing.

Me watching Brazil-Cameroon and sees the referee jogging: “Oh that’s (US Referee) Elfath.”

I had to look it up to make sure but that dude has a very distinctive gait.

There’s only been two knockout round matchups that did not have a European or South American team, and both featured the US: US vs Mexico in 2002 and US vs Ghana in 2010.
