World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

The most poignant example is the press reaction to Carli Lloyd’s criticism.

These comments strike me as Lloyd being a bit too close to the team still. It sounds like a conversation the team would have in the locker room instead of the airwaves. It’d sound much better that way. Here, it just feels a bit off.

This is a good summary of the reactions of the USWNT Twitter stans:
Lloyd has been banging this drum since well before she retired, in what was, at best, an indirect way of highlighting her own commitment. There’s no question that Lloyd is a soccer legend in this country and the world, but she also never hesitated to make sure everyone knew just how much she was working, and more than her teammates if she could help it. Her running wind sprints after the US was knocked out of the Olympics by Canada in plain view of the media is the kind of performative, Jimmy Butler-esque horseshit that most should see through. It’s a way of shirking responsibility for what the team just did, by showing everyone that it couldn’t be your fault, look at how hard you’re training!

It is never the fault of the players, always the coach. If you dare criticize the players, you will be shunned.

(Which is at least something the USWNT and USMNT have in common right now)

In other news, New England Revolution Coach Bruce Arena has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into, uh, something.

The only clue being he may have said “something”.

Jamaica pulls off the unthinkable and will go to the knockout round. A 0-0 against Brazil eliminates the Brazilians. They advance with 5 points, 1 goal for, and 0 goals against.

Another giant is knocked out! Germany only manages a draw against South Korea while Morocco pulls off a 1-0 upset against Colombia to move on.

Germany will not appear in the knockout round for the first time.

#2 #7, and #8 in the FIFA rankings did not advance out of the group stage.

With Germany out, Norway and Japan playing each other, and the USWNT teetering (and then having to play the winner of Norway v Japan), the possibility of a first time winner is pretty high.

I mean both those would be cool, but highly highly highly unlikely. What do they have, 3 goals between the two of em in group play? And that's a fair number given what they've shown offensively.

I think this tournament is shaping up to give teams like France, England, Spain a much better shot. Maybe you could throw a Nigeria in there but thats a pretty big stretch as well.

South Africa is the low-rated team who has actually looked like they could get a breakthrough or two when they needed it.

Japan and Spain took care of business. 3-1 and 5-1 against Norway and Switzerland. Can’t say it’s all too surprising, Group A did not look very strong while Japan has looked the best and Spain has been a machine besides their game against Japan.
