World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

That pretty much will have to end the hexagonal, too, right? Even if CONCACAF only garners one extra slot from the expansion, that'd give us 4.5. Would be silly to have a qualifying round where all but one team advances.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Groups of 3 is just plain awful...guaranteed 2 games and all those off days? So the last day of group play 2 of the 3 teams play and know exactly what they need for both to advance...great idea FIFA. Expansion is somewhat inevitable but this was the wrong choice.

Should have just done 12 groups of 4, top 8 group winners get a bye and remaining 4 group winners and 12 runner ups play in a first round to get to the round of 16...

Still keeps even numbered groups, gives some benefit for group winners to play to the end, etc.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

As for expansion, I don't see how this tournament expands by 16 teams and CONCACAF doesn't get less than 6.

Here is my guess
Host 1-2
UEFA 13-17
CAF 5-8
AFC 4.5-7
CONMEBOL 4.5-7
CONCACAF 3.5-6
OFC 0.5-1

The .5s are a play-in?

From the piece:

"Questionable is also the urgency in reaching such an important decision, with nine years to go until it becomes applicable, without the proper involvement of stakeholders who will be impacted by this change.

Translation: "So you guys picked your spot to have your palms greased in plenty of time to get clear of the wreckage when there's an investigation, eh?"

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Well with 6 CONCACAF the US will never, ever, ever, ever, ever miss. So the networks will be happy.

Except the US is also only guaranteed 2 games now...instead of 3, but I suppose they also have a better shot at being top 16 and being a favorite in a group.

I just hate the idea of the format with different teams getting drastically different rest going into games.

Day 1: A plays B
Day 4/5: A plays C
Day 7/9: C plays B

How is that acceptable?

Seems that Africa and Asia will be the big winners with the newfound spots. Each will get 4 new spots per NBC Sports. Europe will get 3. CONCACAF and CONEMBOL with 2 each, and Oceana will get 1.

They only need to be in the top 32 to be chalk to make the knock out round.

It seems to me that this represents a shift away from groups and towards a single elimination 64-team tournament someday. The scoring is low enough that there will be a few St. Kitts & Nevis or Tuvalu Cinderellas every tourney, and the Germanies and Brasils won't be able to mail in group game 3 like they used to.

But this is FIFA. At the end of the day their sole criterion is maximizing their personal bribes.

Esp if C and B only have to draw to eliminate A. Germany/Austria all over again.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

From what I've seen they may combine CONCACAF and CONMEBOL Qualifying. Makes sense given you can't add spots to CONMEBOL alone. Probably looking at 10-12 spots combined.

That makes some sense...I think that would be good for USA and Mexico to get more games that matter against quality opponents. The travel and some of the stadium locations could be a little brutal at times but overall, it will be good for the CONCACAF big boys to test themselves against CONMEBOL in games that matter.

I still hate the 48 team tournament as presented.

Not to mention meaningful games against Brazil and Argentina at US home sites.

When this expansion idea was initially thrown around a couple years ago, I remember they talked about giving some of the lesser sub-confederations an auto bid into addition to the confederations. Like the Caribbean would get a team, Central America would get a team, South Asia, etc.

there certainly is some value in that...I know they really wanted to get OFC a full bid, it makes sense that you want to guarantee that a team from the Middle East, Caribbean, Central America, and Southeast Asia are guaranteed a chance to participate.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Conveniently, there are 16 sub confederations in FIFA. UEFA, CONMEBOL, and OFC are all one confederation. CONCACAF has three, Asia and Africa have five, though Africa also splits into six regional zones, but we'll just stick with five.

Currently the set up is:
Africa - 6
Asia - 4.5
Oceania - .5
Europe - 13
CONCACAF - 3.5
CONMEBOL - 3.5

Let's just take out the halves for now and add in if confederations keep their current amount plus one per sub-confederation

Africa - 11
Asia - 9
Oceania - 1
Europe - 14
CONCACAF - 6
CONMEBOL - 4

That's 45. Then give the remaining three spots to UEFA or CONMEBOL or split it up into playoffs again. UEFA and CONMEBOL would probably throw a fit but oh well.

People who find soccer boring should watch this Man U - Liverpool match. It's fantastic.
