World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I think /arena would be a terrible idea, but I get the dissatisfaction. We'll see what happens.

in other news EPL ticket prices have dropped.
Arena is a good stopgap measure to get through 2018. Not really a great time to be making a wholesale change. Plus, Arena won't want to stick around anyway and he's available.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I'm willing to give up 1 WC appearance if it means we get the right people in charge and turn around our entire countries soccer program.

We can do both you know...lots of programs have stopgaps to accomplish short term goals while realizing long term goals will require change.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Would Arena get anything out of the Dual Nationals that Klinnsman has brought in? And would we be able to keep them on board through 2022 with any antics over the next two years?

Just some questions that are brought up in the above article. You have to look at the good Klinnsman has done off the pitch. It's hard to deny the progress that's taken place there. How do we make need managerial changes without that progress?

I agree that he's not a great manager, but he's been solid as Technical Director. Is he willing to continue in that role despite not calling the day to day operations?

Ugh. Never link nor quote nor form an opinion from a Haisley article. The only clue he has of soccer is that one Barcelona - Real Mardrid highlight video he saw on YouTube three years ago.

So the questions about development aren't relevant? Do guys like Green and Pulisic come to the US with a different coach at the helm?

Green probably doesn't come with getting on the WC team, where he really shouldn't have Brennan anyway. Pulisic is American, I doubt we needed Jurgen to get him. But what difference does that make now?

Pulisic is American so that's moot point and Green is rather questionable since he's not really playing much first team soccer.

But the main point is Haisley is a terrible writer with a terrible bias towards MLS and US Soccer.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Klinsmann had plenty of time. Just not enough consistency or improvement.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

Elect me.

4-4-2 every game no matter the opposition.

Favor youth in all non critical friendlies and qualifiers.

Back MLS. But try to adjust their season to better align with the world.

Invite our best players to the WC.

Re: World Soccer XXVII: The REAL Football

I think Arena is a good choice as a stop gap through Russia 2018. Beyond that we need to move on and try something else.

I don't know how much I like that the favorite option so far is just to go back to Arena.

Isn't that just because he's the best guy to come in mid world cup cycle? Guess the hope is he gets us to world cup and evaluate from there. But i would hope they are lining up long term options.

Today is a great reminder for me about how many new fans have come aboard in the last 5-6 years, and how many of them have zero clue about US Soccer history.

I get that people view this as a step backwards, I've had my criticisms of Bruce in the past myself. But given the current situation he's the best choice. The most important thing is to qualify for the World Cup and Arena can get that done.

What I really hate is this insistence among people, especially the Europhile Billy Haisley crowd, that "we can't have an American in charge!" As if being an American immediately means you're devoid of any soccer knowledge. Well, that's complete and utter BS. Any improvement that's gonna be done on player development is going to be done by largely American coaches, many of whom will likely be former MLS journeymen. This stupid insistence that it has to be a foreigner to "teach" us is what is really killing us. I'm not saying it has to be an American, but it shouldn't just default to someone because "they're foreign," that's how we ended up with the snake oil salesman we just fired.

4-3-3

Altidore in front of Wood and Morris
Fabian Johnson and Deandre Yedlin as outside backs

I would build around that as my default formation assuming those guys are healthy and Jordan Morris continues to show what he has over the past few months for Seattle.

BBC has a good article about it.
