I do like the fact that soccer does give awards to referees for the final. It takes a lot of work to get there and it’s nice to be recognized.

And those 5 sides finished 2nd (Netherlands), 3rd (Sweden), 4th (England), 5th (France), and 12th (Spain). Pretty impressive group they had to go through.

On paper maybe? It just seemed like, outside of France and maybe Spain, nobody really was up to the challenge of the US. 1995, 1999, and even 2011 were far more challenging World Cups than this one.

Also had to go to PKs against Brazil, needing a late tying goal to go to PKs. Plus a loss to Sweden in the group stage.

Maybe. FWIW, I don't believe Sweden was too concerned with their matchup with the USA, and was more focused on the knockout stages. They were a much better team against Germany and the Netherlands than they were against the USA. As you mentioned, France and Spain both challenged the USA. I thought England challenged us too, particularly in the second half. As for the Dutch, they were certainly playing a different strategy, and had they been successful on a counter early on, it would have been a much different game.

I think it may have been that those other teams were good but the USWNT stepped up its game for this tournament. If you look at the last couple of years other teams have knocked them off but when the pressure was on they couldn't be matched.

Couple of times there they could have had uncontested tap-in (hockey terminology) goals if the ballcarrier had dished it late when the goalie came out to cut off the angle. Probably much harder to do with your feet in that situation than with a stick.
