World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

The Germans had two great chances to level the game in the final minutes but Sweden holds on to advance to Wednesday's semifinal.
Sweden may well be the only team that can beat the US. Unsurprising from the Germans though, they were never really tested this tournament.

So apparently this tournament determines qualification for the olympics from UEFA and the losses by Germany and France knock them out...

Canada chokes a 2-0 lead to lose to Haiti 3-2.

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Mexico survives in KFTM (that’s PKs to you non-referees).

Re: World Soccer XXIX: Pro/Rel USA! just kidding!

Muck Fexico.

They're used to the refs cheating for them. Today seemed like it shocked them.
Speaking of referees helping them, here’s SB Nation’s rewinder on Chastain’s kick. It shows Scurry’s save and, I know Scurry left the line early but it still amazes me to this day how far off the line she is. Like, she’s closer to the six than the goal line! That save is used as a reference point by referees in pregame instructions to ARs to this day.

Though I can understand why it wasn’t called: 90k people in the stadium, host team, huge moment. Yeah f- that I’d like to get out alive too.

If you make the save illegally is it a goal or a re-kick?

Best description of Curaçao: “You can 100% tell they're all Dutch because this is the least CONCACAF game I've seen this tournament.

I assume they are all supermodels?

The Dutch are unbelievable. It feels like they're all over 6 feet, male or female, and all in shape. They're like the Anti-Americans.

I'm not sure I've seen a team control play so much while also never managing to get a shot off within the box.

They're doing their best Simpsons-ball (Holds it! HOLDS IT! HOOOOLLLLLLDSSS ITTTTT!) before getting that one good long pass downfield. They just can't do anything when there isn't anything to spread out.

One interesting thing about soccer (at least as the rules were written when I used to ref; I haven't kept up too much with them lately) is you can never award a goal unless it actually goes in. No matter what. Even if a fan runs out and makes a save that would have gone in because no one else was around. You can't award a goal because it did not actually go into the goal.

Is there any situation in which you are awarded a PK on an unminded net?

Yes, if you consider the following as part of your situation. If a player reaches up and grabs the goal post and is strong enough to pull it down (and let's say he isn't near the shot that was taken and thus the net is "unminded") that would result in a PK. I'm pretty sure.

BTW, here is an oddball soccer rule. A goalie can score by throwing the ball into the net. Now mind you, since he can only touch the ball within his penalty box, he'll have to throw that ball 100 or so yards. And the opposing goalie would have to be catatonic to not be able to stop it. But if a goalie somehow manages to pull that off, it's a goal.

I meant that given the rule that you can never award a goal is there a situation (e.g., the fan save you mentioned) where they set up a PK but you are not permitted to defend it. Sounds like the answer is no. In which case I'm training an army of fans to take the pitch when my goalkeep moves up in the final minute.

I see. You can always defend a PK, no matter the circumstances of it being awarded.

Doesn't have to be an army of fans. Could be a walrus...
