Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Better bid. Better stadia. Of course you probably already have your flight to Qatar booked.
You think I can afford to go to Qatar? Or even want to go to Qatar? That's a good one.

Look, it's ludicrous. There was bribery. FIFA is corrupt. That doesn't mean we're entitled to anything.

We have Portugal in Manaus in the second match. Maybe someone on Germany will kick Ronaldo in his stupid face in the first match and he won't be able to play?

Edit to add: Wikipedia contradicts what I'm saying, but this is per the official US Soccer facebook page.

I thought you Cornellians had it all? :D

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

so beat Ghana, play Portugal and Germany to draws and hope 5 points is enough.
One thing to remember is that we play Germany last, if they get results from Ghana and Portugal, 5 points should be enough and Germany would be happy to play for the tied guaranteeing them the group win.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Somehow, before the draw, Mexico had better odds on winning the whole thing than we did.

Someone tell me why that would be true. Now, maybe, but not before.

On a different topic, Klinsmann got pretty much everything he didn't want, but at least right now he's on ESPN saying "**** it dude, let's go bowling"

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I got called annoying in another thread, but I have to be the most cursed fan on this board. Nothing goes in my way. Heck the best news I've gotten is Cano and Lunqvist. I should be celebrating titles once in a while.

You are annoying, you act like the world is out to get you and your teams. It's stupid and doesn't help anything, it just makes you an annoying depressed twit.

Go a metric ton of years without playoffs and see how you'd react.

That's interesting. Super dork Nate Silver actually says our odds of advancing from the group are pretty much the same as Portugal's, and Ghana with the weakest (which I expected).

Portugal does for some reason have a bad match whenever they play in the group stages. I'd love to beat Ghana, but they've had our number. We should be motivated. As for Germany, well they're Germany. It could be better that we have no expectation. We'll be playing with house money.

Also... sorry for my behavior. I just got wound up. I apologize for offending people.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Anyone think we have a chance of advancing?

I think we can beat or tie Portugal and Ghana and perhaps tie Germany. That might or might not be enough to advance. Best case 7 points, worst case 2 points. I like our chances against Portugal in Manaus, I tihnk we'll be the fitter side and if we can stay close until late, pull another Panama on them.

More from the Klinsman interview that I found revealing:

Klinsmann won the World Cup as a player with West Germany in 1990, but his German teams were upset in the quarterfinals in 1994 (by Bulgaria) and in 1998 (by Croatia). He says he learned something in those surprise exits: World Cups can be less about the total overall talent on a team (though that certainly is necessary) than about the chemistry on your team and your tolerance for dealing with adversity.

“I went to three World Cups as a player, and we had by far the best team in ’94 at the World Cup in the U.S.,” he said. “But we screwed it up because of chemistry and private issues with the players … Then the whole tournament is over and you say, ‘S—, we are the only team here who can beat Brazil. And we would have beaten Brazil [the eventual champion] because we would have attacked them! Everybody else defended against Brazil.

“So here was a World Cup that we basically threw out the window. And then in ’98 it was a similar experience for me: There were chemistry issues. It’s a fascinating topic to go into because there are so many little pieces that need to kind of come along and work. England is a good example. They destroy themselves from the inside—and from the outside too with the tabloids and stuff like that. You need a special culture to approach it the right way.”

....he also thinks a good four-week training camp before the World Cup will be essential for taking that mentality to the next level....

“In a World Cup you have to improve every area of the game on the field, if it’s tactically, physically, the transition game, compactness defensively, spreading out right away attacking or movement off the ball, which we always discuss,” he said. “All those elements, those four weeks of preparation [at pre-World Cup camp] will be there for doing all that work. And also preparing them for the circumstances here. Hey guys, we’re going to travel extensively. Things won’t be perfect, if it’s hotels, tickets, family, whatever. Just be prepared for it. If something doesn’t work out the way it should, so be it. No problem. Forget about it and move on.”

In the end, Klinsmann is convinced the U.S. will draw a difficult group on Friday, and that doesn’t bother him.

I remember once playing in a volleyball match where the other team was undoubtedly superior to ours. However, I knew several of the players on the other team, and I kept saying things under my breath to some of them about others, and I let my teammates know the kinds of things to say as well. We were able to needle them into arguing amongst themselves. Their squabbles distracted from their play, they pizzed off the referee, and we won the match.

Agree on Portugal. Not too worried about the past with Ghana unless the Yanks stay mind****ed about it. Glad to be playing Germany last, but I'm a little concerned that they could be providing us with a desperate Portugal in Manaus. We need at least three players watching Ronaldo at all times.

Don't apologize. If there was anyone who could rig a ball draw, it's FIFA.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

We're looking at this all wrong.

Pity poor Australia. They got almost exactly the worst possible draw for anyone, including the USMNT.

I love the English and all, but they're complaining. If you have Costa Rica in your group, your argument is invalid.

And finally: The pony reaction...

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

As for CONCACAF, I think you have to be pretty happy for Honduras, they are certainly an underdog, but they couldn't have asked for a better draw than that other than maybe France. For CONCACAF to get respect, a team like Honduras is going to have to make it out of group play and they have a chance. Costa Rica's draw is much more problematic for that, but who knows.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

In other news, why did the US pick their training facility before the draw? Wouldn't practicing in Recife/Natal or somewhere else in NE Brazil make more sense with 2 games up there?
