Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

This. Like I said, it's not that they're not corrupt.

The Guardian has a draw simulator:
http://www.theguardian.com/football...up-draw-2014-create-your-own-draw-interactive

The first one I ran has us in a group with Spain, Ecuador and Greece. It's a tough group, but I don't know that I would trade with Mexico (Uruguay, Ghana, Portugal).

Their generator isn't quite right, it always puts France in Pot 3 instead of having the UEFA team "in" Pot 3 be random from Pot 4.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I drew the US into Belgium, Chile and England. You know, I don't think we've given the Brits nearly enough grief over that E-A-S-Y headline after the draw for 2010.

hah!
Group A
Brazil
USA
France
Greece

That would be... problematic

Bring it!

Actually, I think there'd be a not-terrible chance of us getting out of that group. You have to assume Brazil is winning that group, but Greece can be streaky and France is... well... they're French.

The French just surrendered to Brazil.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Where is the draw simulator?

EDIT: Found it. I got US in Group G with England, Uruguay and Russia. I consider the group of death in my sim Group H with Holland, Switzerland, Chile and Mexico.

I got a Group E of USA, Switzerland, Nigeria and Greece. We then went on to beat Uruguay, Belgium and Netherlands on our way to a Cup win over England in the finals!

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

As far as pot 1 goes, I want no part of South American teams down there nor do I want to see Germany or Spain for obvious reasons. For as good as Belgium appears to be, they still haven't been in a major tournament for quite some time. If it can't be Switzerland, Belgium would be my alternative.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

So that random draw on the Guardian website predicts the results of the world cup based on its random draw...my first time clicking on that it had USA with Belgium, Russia, Algeria for group play, finishing 2nd. The in the knockout round it had USA beating Colombia, Japan, Italy and Uruguay to win the world cup...crazy.

I had the US losing to Holland in the round of 16 and Brazil winning it all.

I had Iran winning the World Cup in one of my draws :p

Got the sweetheart draw last time I simulated: Switzerland, Cameroon, Russia. It predicted USA winning the group and defeating England in the knockout round before falling to Brazil in the quarters. Holland defeated Brazil for the Cup.

Edit: Finally got the USA to win the World Cup! Came in second to Argentina, then defeated Spain, Russia, France and Italy to win the whole thing.

Enjoy it. It's the closest we're going to get in our lifetimes.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

You wouldn't bet on that run in Vegas? :)

Depends upon the odds, and the bet.

I'd bet that the US makes quarterfinals of knockout round with the right odds, for example, before the draw (though I won't have much time to get the bet in since the draw is tomorrow.....).

Then, if the odds shift after the draw, I'd either take the other side and lock in a profit, or I'd double down, depending on the outcome.

Not sure I'd bet on the US going much farther than the round of 8, though....we might wind up trying to play like Italy  (hope for incredible goal-tending and hope even more for luck on the rare counter).

If anyone is offering odds, I'll take the US to advance from their group, before I even know the composition of the group.

The bigger factor in the draw will be travel.

Brazil is a huge country, however, and from its home base here in São Paulo the U.S. will have to travel by plane to its first-round games. Depending on Friday’s draw (ESPN2, 11:30 a.m. ET), the U.S. will have to cover anywhere from 1,946 miles to 8,866 miles round-trip during the opening round alone.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Right, because clearly where you play is more important than who you play.
After playing with that simulator for a little while (not sure why I originally typed "few weeks" here), I understand where FF is coming from. There really aren't going to be any easy groups. Sure, it would be nice to get one of the weaker African nations rather than Ghana or one of the non-seeded South American nations, but no matter what there will be a seeded team (all of which are pretty good, even Switzerland and Belgium) and a non-seeded European team (almost all of which are pretty good and some of which are Italy and Netherlands and the like). If you go based on the assumption that it's going to be three tough games no matter what, then three tough games with reasonable travel demands are better than three tough games with thousands of miles of travel every other day.

That being said, I have to imagine that this will be the same for every team. If we're in Group C or Group G, we'll have a lot of travel, but so will every other team in the group. If we're in Group B or Group H, we'll have less travel, but so will every other team in the group. Though, on the other hand, in some groups (Group D, Group E), one team (E4, D4) has to do significantly more traveling than the others. The one thing the table in the SI link hammers home for me is that I really, REALLY don't want Group A, because then we'll have to play Brazil AND have to do crazy traveling.
