Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I'm going to stick to absolutely basic for now; when it's a halfway decent hour, I'll update this.

CONCACAF Numbers:

--- In - 17+ () ---
--- Playoff - 15 () ---
CRC 14 - 23 [1-5]
USA 13 - 22 [1-5]
HON 10 - 19 [1-6]
MEX 8 - 17 [1-6]
PAN 7 - 16 [1-6]
JAM 3 - 12 [3-6]
--- Eligible WO Playoff - 11 () ---
--- Out - 7 () ---

Remaining LEAGUE schedules:
CRC - @JAM, @HON, MEX
USA - MEX, JAM, @PAN
MEX - @USA, PAN, @CRC
HON - PAN, CRC, @JAM
PAN - @HON, @MEX, USA
JAM - CRC, @USA, HON

So the US is through with a win against Mexico, right?

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

And a Honduras win or draw.

Actually, if Panama has to win that game, Honduras would then have to win out to get USA into said situation, which would actually be a three-way tie for 2nd. The GF is fairly close, so it's possible, but Panama would have to win convincingly.

OK, so it's time to actually explain these.

CONCACAF Numbers:

--- In - 17+ () ---
--- Playoff - 15 () ---
CRC 14 - 23 [1-5]
USA 13 - 22 [1-5]
HON 10 - 19 [1-6]
MEX 8 - 17 [1-6]
PAN 7 - 16 [1-6]
JAM 3 - 12 [3-6]
--- Eligible - 11 () ---
--- Out - 9 () ---

Remaining LEAGUE schedules:
CRC - @JAM, @HON, MEX
USA - MEX, JAM, @PAN
HON - PAN, CRC, @JAM
MEX - @USA, PAN, @CRC
PAN - @HON, @MEX, USA
JAM - CRC, @USA, HON

RANKINGS (high):
Jamaica cannot catch Costa Rica nor the USA. They are able to get into 3rd outright if they win out, USA and Costa Rica win the other two, and the remaining two matches are draws. Panama can get first outright if both Panama and Jamaica win out, Mexico wins the other two, and HON/CRC is a draw. All the others have several ways to get first outright.

RANKINGS (low):
Costa Rica and the USA cannot drop below Jamaica. Costa Rica is able to achieve a two-way tie for 4th several ways, and because Goals For is the first tiebreaker, convincing wins by other teams allow for this to be a possibility. There are several ways for the USA to finish in 5th outright. There are several ways for Honduras to finish in 6th, and so on and so forth.

Thresholds:
In (17+): In order for 17 to require a playoff, it would involve a two-way tie for 3rd at 17 points. Mexico wins out, Panama and Jamaica lose out, and then a Honduras win or tie vs. Costa Rica allows for this threshold to happen.

Playoff (15): Assume Jamaica loses out, USA and Costa Rica lose the other two games, and Panama beats Honduras. Mexico's at 14, Panama's at 13. If you get to 15, you are guaranteed at least a playoff (through a tie).

Eligible (11): If Honduras loses out, there is no way to get a tie for 3rd at 10 points because of the fact that Mexico still has to play Panama. There are several ways for 11 to be 3rd place outright, so that remains the eligible threshold (think "home eligible" from Todd's method).

Out (9): Because Mexico plays Panama, you cannot be eligible for a playoff on 8 points. There are several ways to do it at 9 points, assuming that Mexico/Panama is a draw and then they both lose the other two games. Jamaica could then lose out and you'd get 4th at 9.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Well Chepo has been fired in Mexico. That'll make things interesting for tuesday.

A victory on Tuesday, along with a Honduras victory & Costa Rica draw would be music to my ears. It would clinch our spot in Brazil, put us back on top of the group, and essentially leave Mexico fighting for the playoff spot.

EDIT: Also, I have a little flyer on Israel to beat Russia. 7-1 odds were too good to pass up. :p:D:D

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

FYI, US Soccer will have a pep rally at 5PM at the Bluestone in Columbus. Among prizes that will be given away: tickets to the game.

ETA: Doors open at 5, pep rally begins at 8. The event is tonight.

We're missing a lot of guys tomorrow night. I can't say I'm overwhelmingly confident.

So a Mexican ref yellow cards a US player so that player can get suspended before a big qualifier and it stands.

You can't spell CONCACAF without CON-spiracy.

Next time we play Costa Rica I'd save a sub til late and have him earn the yellow on Campbell. Hopefully knocking him out for a few games.

I know they embellish during the run of play...what Campball did was something that should be policed on the field by a backup who would like to earn a little more time in a future game.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio
