Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

For the sake of the world, and for the much needed mixing of Brazilian and Swedish girls, Ibrahimovic must score and score often.

Also, without giving anything away, I will never root for Burkina Faso unless they go back to being Upper Volta. It's a kickass name.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

If you have access, I would highly recommend turning on ESPN2 for next 20 minutes.

ETA: Enter Emily Latella's catch phrase here. What a finish.

The French cheat their way in again? I'm shocked.

Time for Ireland v Ukraine in the F France Cup.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I put the World Cup teams in pots based on their FIFA rankings.

Brazil
Spain
Germany
Argentina
Colombia
Belgium
Uruguay
Switzerland

Netherlands
Italy
England
Chile
USA
Portugal
Greece
Bosnia-Herzegovina

Côte d'Ivoire
Russia
Ukraine
France
Ecuador
Ghana
Mexico
Costa Rica

Algeria
Nigeria
Honduras
Japan
Iran
Korea
Australia
Cameroon

Then did a draw based on those pots.

Code:
Group A Group B Group C Group D Group E Group F Group G Group H
Brazil Colombia	Germany Uruguay Belgium Switzerland	Argentina Spain
Italy Bosnia USA Greece Chile Portugal	Netherlands England
Mexico Ukraine Ecuador Costa Rica	France Ivory Coast	Russia Ghana
Iran Cameroon	Australia	Algeria Japan Korea Nigeria Honduras

I like this draw a lot better than the simulations based on geography :)

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Well now that the field is more or less set I guess we can start looking forward to the draw in 2 weeks. From the looks of it, this maybe the most stacked World Cup in memory and definitely since the 32 team field began.

Elsewhere someone posted the ELO Rankings of the qualified teams and something like 28 of the top 32 are in the field. Algeria, Honduras, Cameroon, Iran are the outsiders, 2 of which we (probably) cannot draw.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Great pride shown by Bob Bradley and Egypt today in earning a 2-1 but too little to overcome the 6-1 loss in Ghana. Black Stars advance. I'll keep all talk of Burkina Faso vs Algeria quiet until tonight since I'm pretty sure FS23 plans to watch tonight?

Thank you for not giving the update, although I was able to watch the match before I came on here.

What a bummer of a game. Algeria got lucky just before half that their captain (and eventual goal scorer) didn't get sent off. It was a lunging, two foot, spikes up tackle that caught the Burkina player's leg. He got a yellow for it, but it looked like it should have been the poster for a red card. Either way, once Algeria got their goal, they knew how to defend it. Congrats to Algeria, they deserve the spot.

It was a great run for Burkina, and I hope they can use it to qualify for Russia in 2018. Their program has consistently improved over the last 4-5 years, and I hope to see it continue.

Not to mention 24 of the 32 teams were in the 2010 installment of the World Cup with only one team making its first appearance and that one was part of another country that have previously participated (Yugoslavia).

Using FIFA, ELO and SPI...there are 25 to 27 teams ranked in the top 32 in the world that qualified. Honduras, South Korea and Cameroon were not ranked in the top 32 in any of the rankings. Ghana, Algeria, Japan, Iran, and Australia were also not top 32 in one of the rankings.

As has been discussed, these are the most likely pots:

Pot 1 - Seeds (8)
Spain
Germany
Argentina
Colombia
Belgium
Uruguay
Switzerland
Brazil

Pot 2 - AFC/CONCACAF (8)
Japan
Iran
South Korea
Australia
United States
Mexico
Costa Rica
Honduras

Pot 3 - CAF/CONMEBOL (7)
Ivory Coast
Ghana
Algeria
Nigeria
Cameroon
Chile
Ecuador

Pot 4 - UEFA (9)
Netherlands
Italy
England
Portugal
Greece
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Croatia
Russia
France

With France being the lowest ranked UEFA side and not being much separation from others (21st vs 14,15,16,18,19) they will probably just treat it as one 9 team pot and the 9th team will get placed in a group that it can be.

Keep in mind that the Burkinabe people (hence, Burkina Faso) find the "Upper Volta" name filled with racism, oppression, and hate. My guess is that they don't go back to it anytime soon. ;)

Ouch. Group of Death possibility here: Argentina, United States, Netherlands, Italy

They've got their priorities, and I have mine. :p

tl;dr: This World Cup is stacked...

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Not gonna happen. Michel won't allow it.

From what I've seen they're likely to end up thrown into Pot 3, but can't get drawn against Spain, Germany, Belgium, or Switzerland - which is kind of stupid.

Probably the worst case scenario for the US is to end up in a group with Brazil, the Netherlands, and either England or Chile, depending on the pots.

Best case by Elo is being drawn with Belgium, Algeria, and Bosnia. Certainly wouldn't turn up my nose at that. The US would actually be the top ranked Elo team in that group.

EDIT: Regardless, the USA is pretty much by far the top ranked team in the weakest pot, which all but guarantees that any group they are included in is going to be the group of death.
