World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

What a ridiculous match between West Brom and ManU. If Chelsea don't want to give Lukaku a shot, I would imagine they'll have no trouble finding a taker for his services.

It came late this season, but Arsenal fans worldwide celebrated St. Totteringham's Day yesterday! One of the funnest things I heard was that the Sunderland away fans at White Hart Late started chanting "One-nil to the Arsenal" when Arsenal went ahead at Newcastle. Classic!

That's reserve goalie Ross Turnbull's son...

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

My favorite comment from Deadspin's post on that video:

Rafa Benitez: "Okay, you see this big round thing? It's called a football. See, you want to try to kick it, but not too hard, right at that thingy right over there that we call a goal. If you do that, all the fans here will be thrilled! Doesn't that sound exciting?"

Ross Turnbull: "That's very sweet of you Rafa, but I think my son knows what he's..."

Benitez: "Quiet Ross, I'm talking to Torres."

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

The only thing funnier than how badly Chelsea overpaid Liverpool for Torres is how badly Liverpool went and spent all that money.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I was hoping it would have a tie-in to the Cosmos, but alas. That's NY's true team.
Why? This is like saying you don't want to root for the Mets because the Dodgers are New York's true team. The NASL is gone. The Cosmos are gone and they are not coming back. The people who have owned the Cosmos name have been using it as a transparent money grab rather than with any heed for the legacy of the actual team, which has been gone for over 25 years now. It's time to get over it.

Actually I know plenty of people that root for the Dodgers over the Mets for that reason. I used to love it when the Metrostars would trot out to Cosmos jerseys. There was talk years ago of eventually changing the name to the Cosmos, but that died with Red Bull and their purchase of the team. RBNY had a chance to make even more money by getting the Cosmos name, but refused. They'd be printing money because they could tie into the past with Pele and others. I'm sure a huge corporation like them could've ponied up because the payoff could've been huge. However RBNY misses the boat.

RBNY didn't miss the boat, RBNY recognized that the Cosmos are gone and using the Cosmos name rather than their own would have been a transparent money grab. And anyone you know who roots for the Dodgers rather than the Mets for that reason is living in the past.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I think tying back into the Cosmos would have been a neat thing to do.

OK, true, but (based on my interactions with sports fans in and from Connecticut) if Hartford got a new team, they would be embraced by the community.

No. No. No. Nononononono.

I'm tired of this Cosmos BS. They had their opportunity, they didn't wanna play by MLS' rules because they felt the other MLS teams would just be profiting off them. What a load of BS. Nobody gives a * about a team that hasn't existed in 30 years. They're not coming back and I hope they never do. They're the manifestation of what was wrong with the NASL, overpaid, bloated, and overhyped.
