Because we're all stupid enough to find it funny:

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

All of Scotland knocked out of Europe, and it's not even September. On the other hand, Shamrock Rovers are through to the group stages of the Europa League, a pretty big deal for the Irish league.

In Champions League news, the group stage draw was today:
Group A: Bayern Munich, Villarreal, Manchester City, Napoli.

Group B: Inter, CSKA Moscow, Lille, Trabzonspor.

Group C: Manchester United, Benfica, FC Basel, Otelul Galati.

Group D: Real Madrid, Lyon, Ajax, Dinamo Zagreb.

Group E: Chelsea, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Genk.

Group F: Arsenal, Marseille, Olympiakos, Borussia Dortmund.

Group G: FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St. Petersburg, FC Apoel.

Group H: Barcelona, Milan, FC BATE Borisov, Viktoria Plzen.

Don't feel TOO bad, Rangers/Celtic fans - you shouldn't be as embarrassed as Roma or Sevilla, anyway.

Not sure there's a ton of shame in losing to Hannover as Sevilla did. 4th in the Bundesliga last year. They do that this year, and they get into the Champions League.

OK, true, but by the numbers Sevilla were the strongest club in that playoff round (which makes me wonder how they and Hannover got drawn together) and should still have advanced.

Arsenal may not make it out now after losing every quality veteran they have and not replacing them.

I guess A, B, F, and G could have a fight for the 2nd qualifier.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I'd say Group A is the most interesting, with City of course a tough team from the third pot, and Napoli one of the best from pot four. Arsenal's group wasn't looking bad until Dortmund got thrown in from the fourth pot. ManU, as usual, get an easy group.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I don't envy City's draw at all. I will admit that United got a nice draw, but you play who's drawn out of the pots. Inter got an easy draw too.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

My preference mixed with the reality of team quality for advancement would be:

Group A: Bayern Munich, Villarreal
Group B: Inter, CSKA Moscow
Group C: Manchester United, Benfica
Group D: Real Madrid, Lyon
Group E: Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen
Group F: Arsenal, Marseille
Group G: FC Porto, Zenit St. Petersburg
Group H: Barcelona, AC Milan

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

It would have been real interesting if City had been thrown into the Barca/Milan group. That would have given us a real group of death.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

OK... I was not expecting that.

(Please don't interpret that as a slight.)

Watching the EPL review show. One consistent theme that doesn't appear to be going away is the extreme ease in which PKs are given. I don't like it.

None of the ones I've seen have looked like bad calls.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Sooo how about getting that striker and midfielder we need before Thursday? :(

Rovers need scoring punch and quick, or they are in real trouble.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

So Villa puts Heskey in as an attacking mid-fielder, a guy who has spent his career at attack and has the work rate of a clam. Then they go scoreless and leave him in the game...how could they not sub somebody for him?

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Well, that was a big ouch against ManU. Wenger's in a bind, as he's going to take a lot of heat if he doesn't spend some cash to bolster his depleted roster (Traore is the latest to go, today), but sellers will know he needs to do something and will jack the prices up. But, you just can't compete with the financial muscle of Chelski, ManU, and now City, while being a net selling team for the last decade or so. Really, it's getting to the point in the EPL where you can't run a football club as a business where you balance the books and even try to make a profit while simultaneously competing against the biggest club in the world (ManU) and two clubs that have endless checkbooks (Chelski and City).

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Kind of a shame that Arsenal has been sputtering because they didn't play boring football. Wenger clearly needs to get some experience in the side and Kronke needs to loosen the purse strings a little bit or it's going to be a long year at The Emirates.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I was reading an article on The Guardian about who Arsenal might bring in over the next few days, and one player mentioned was Mikael Arteta from Everton, whom Arsenal have been rumored to be interested in for years. Apparently an obstacle is that Arteta is one of the best paid Everton players and Arsenal wouldn't match his wages he gets at Goodison Park. Didn't know Arsenal's wage structure was at least in some ways inferior to that at Everton. Arsene is just a bit too frugal!

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I heard a rumor that Wenger has a rule that the manager should be the highest paid person and not the players. I know the manager is in charge, but that's an archaic way of thinking.
