World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So, in case nobody noticed, the Dutch just knocked Brazil out of the World Cup. I'm thinking Felipe Melo isn't very popular in Brazil right now, after giving up an own goal and getting red carded. While Brazil are fun to watch, it's kind of nice that someone else will win it.

Yes, this. I mentioned a few days ago on Twitter that I don't hate Brazil or even dislike them at all, but that I was just bored with them winning the World Cup every other tournament. I've never had a tweet retweeted by more people that I don't know than I did with that one.

They are enjoyable to watch but when they win every game that's less fun. That they're easily going to be the favorites in four years was another reason.

They're also incredibly big babies when things start to go against them and watching them thrash about and pout is highly enjoyable.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

In Dempsey's defense: he took a LOT of abuse this year.
He gets fouled a LOT.
In their defense, I think if the USA scored in extra time first, they would done the same thing.
No, no we wouldn't have. We'd milk the clock on throw-ins, set pieces, etc. and run the ball to the corner.
Don't kid yourself. We would've done the same thing that Ghana did. Even Harkes said so and he's as big a homer as there is.

Crazy day for Melo. He also played the great through ball to set up Robinho's goal, but man, what a bonehead decision to stomp on Robben. He really got under Brazil's skin. He got fouled a lot, but the rolling around is silly.

I've been pretty impressed by the Dutch right back, van der Wiel (who will miss the semifinal due to card accumulation). Good pace getting up and down the wing.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So then you agree, they wouldn't have done the same things that Ghana did. Which is what I said the first time around.

Yah know. Ghana did some time wasting, no doubt about it. But I don't think they were nearly as egregious as what we regularly see from southern European and South American teams. You hate to see it when your team is behind, but I don't really have a problem with how Ghana went about things.

I agree the U.S. probably wouldn't have done quite as much, but we would have time wasted a good deal, no doubt about it.

Very true that on the rare occasions when they lose, they don't take it well. A bit more grace from them in defeat would garner a good deal of respect. Too bad.

Seriously, you think we would've dived once without even being touched (and in the one guy's case, without anyone being within 15 feet of him)? Let alone twice?

You must be watching a different US Team than I have over the years.

In 16 years as a soccer fan I've never, not once, seen a team fake an injury, diddle around with the stretcher, and then have the supposedly injured man tiptoe all the way across the pitch to be replaced. $20 says Inkoom is in the lineup tonight.

Time wasting isn't the problem. Faking injuries in order to time waste is the issue.

The three minutes he was down was added on in stoppage time.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

You continue to go out of your way to prove that you don't know anything about soccer.

Really?

I find this comical since I played it all the way through high school and reffed it at the youth and travel levels.

Please enlighten me where I was wrong?

1) There was only two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half of extra time.

2) Dooshnozzle easily wasted 3 minutes with that farce involving the stretcher

3) Those two minutes of stoppage time is probably what we should have had anyway, without Dooshnozzle's theatrics.

Actually, he's not wrong. The ref almost NEVER adds additional time on for extra time. Almost never. 2 minutes is a ton for additional time.

I think I usually see it be a minute at most. He added three to punish the Ghanians for time wasting. One minute is a lot for stoppage time.

I have seen some world class time wasting, wasting several minutes in extra time with theatrics and the whistle blowing right at 30 minutes.

He added two.

And he blew the whistle at 1:50.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Still a lot. If you watch a lot of international football, its one of my gripes in extra time that most refs just blow the whistle right at 30:00.

Note that I fixed it for 2 minutes in one spot and left it at three in the other.
Fair enough.

This is really the first time I've actively watched the World Cup, so I'm not too familiar with some of these ins and outs.

A little shocking that they would treat added time so differently in international soccer. If they ever added the actual amount of time wasted on throw-ins, injuries, etc., they could've justified 6 minutes at the end of stoppage time.

Of course, then they could also justify 15 minutes at the end of regulation in a lot of these games.

I've never seen anyone, not even the Portuguese, dive to that extent. I've never seen someone dive, get stretchered off, and then take their sweet time getting off the field on a substitution. That's dedication to diving.

Looking forward to watching Uruguay crotch stomp them.

You guys must not have watched when we played them in the 2006 world cup. They pulled the SAME sh*t. Even more egregious that year. As a ref, when someone went down I sent them off the field and wouldn't allow them back on until I was *ahem* satisfied they were able to play.

In their defense, I think if the USA scored in extra time first, they would done the same thing.

This is 100% BS. You didn't see any of this when the US beat spain last year.

No, no we wouldn't have. We'd milk the clock on throw-ins, set pieces, etc. and run the ball to the corner.

We would not have 3 guys on the ground in the prone position after not even being touched simply because our clearance didn't make it far enough. I've yet to see a U.S. player ever get on that **** stretcher unless they actually need it.

Amen to that.

It helps when you score a second goal at the 73 minute mark.

The last 15 minutes are the prime "time wasting" time when you're running on your last cylinder and the subs are finishing up coming in or already gone.

True, but I can't recall a single time (although, unlike some people on this board, I'll admit I am biased) the US has pulled what ghana consistently does.

I hope fifa addresses this. If you get stretchered off, you're DONE. It means you can't continue. If the refs weren't such a bunch of pusies they'd card the hell out of these teams for pulling this crap. I know I would have.

Edit: THe refs need to stop being afraid of carding someone who MAY be legitimately injured. If they're going to be legitimately stretchered off, they aren't going to play the next few games anyways.
