World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Can't we just invade FIFA? Where is it anyway? Asia? Is it near Fiji? Are they Christians or Muslims?

I say we launch Operation Upper 90 and go in there, free the people from this tyranny and bring FIFA into the democratic world (with goal judges).

That's really what we should have done with McCrystal.

Uh, no thank you. 32 teams, their media, fans, and WAGs in a country only slightly larger than the state of Georgia?

So what? The UK is only about 40% bigger, or roughly the size of Michigan.

If they can host, they can host.

(But Uruguay probably can't)

Sorry, forgot the other half of the argument. The population of Uruguay is basically equal to that of the city of Atlanta.

Oh...I certainly dont think Uruguay is capable of hosting, and if they tried...they'd end up in worse shape than Greece did from trying to host the olympics

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Is there any reason to think its a bad idea to stay in anyway? I mean will European countries not vote for USA for 2022 because they didn't drop their 2018 bid? Is it really that much more difficult to put together bids for both events? Sure doesn't seem like it should.

I think there is some legitimate concern that Australia dropping out is part of some grand bargain between Asia and Europe and we'll be frozen out of 2022.

In the grand scheme that may not suck because both Asia and Europe can't bid on 2026. That really doesn't leave much for possible host countries. USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina/Uruguay, Morocco....

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I fully believe that England was outplayed by Germany, but here are some of my gripes.

In the 10th or 11th Rooney was in on goal, all alone, but the linesman blew it for offside, completely wrong because Philip Lahm played the ball back!!!

Might have been a goal, might not have been.

Besides the ref completely bungling the no goal, he also bungled the goal that made the score 3-1. Lampard lined up for the FK. Germany lines up 8 yards away. Ref makes them move back. As Lampard is striding up, the men are maybe 6 yards away, they block the FK, go on the break and score. The ref should have blown for the kick to be retaken. He knew everyone for England was forward meaning he was gifting Germany a break.

And even though England wasn't going to come back, Larrionda then decided for two added minutes...with two goals and several substitutions. That's a curious one that didn't have anything to do with the final score.

Don't get me wrong, Germany outplayed England. No one for England played well. Germany would have likely have won on penalties, worst case.

But there were a lot of bad decisions that went against England, the type that don't really make sense to me.

Oh well, England always goes down with either a ref's decision radically changing the landscape of the match, or on penalties, or on crosses that float into a net while a stricken keeper watches.

I'd like to change it up, how about in two years England just wins it all, thanks.

I think our best chance of getting a World Cup before 2026 is to steal Brazil's. We remain the only country in the world that could host a World Cup that started tomorrow.

On the coaching situation. I think Bradley has done fine. The reality is that we don't have a lot of talent and we have even less depth. We've made great strides forward in player development, but that is still our biggest weakness. It's hard to believe this country has never produced a real world-class defender. You'd think a great defender would be the easiest thing to produce.

I think the USA will do fine in 2014 regardless of the coach. The disaster will come in Europe, so write off 2018. Bobby McMahon can coach that year . :D

I don't think Bradley should be replaced unless they have a better coach ready to go. Last time when they fired Arena, they had no strategy going forward. I think they thought tons of great coaches would be lining up for the job, but they were wrong.

I'd love to see Klinsmann coach the USA. I think he is dedicated to this country for the long term, so he wouldn't be a typical foreign coach who comes for the short term and then leaves like Bora did. Klinsmann understands soccer in this country, so he knows what he's getting into and he understands the game at very deep level. He would be, IMO, a great long term solution for us. Give him the total control and get out of the way.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

It would be quite a joke if Japan got a second World Cup before the US or England.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Everything except the Qatar part. Australia would be far more likely.

I had thought Australia had dropped out.

Russia's bid has to be European and not Asian because it is based on the federation, right? I would think if Russia could swing a way to represent Asia they would get it every time until China becomes all our overlords.
