Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Kind of dumb question, but with the talk of Landon indecisive about going to Europe on loan for the offseason, would any Euro league based player come over to the MLS for a loan during their offseason? Or are Euro clubs unwilling to grant a loan because of the possibility of injury? Or the Euro schedule isn't that great for it?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Sure, but that's a lot different than saying "stadiums" as a problem.

If it makes you feel better, we're second most likely to lose out on our bid to an Asian peninsula that just hosted the Cup 8 years ago in the hope that a sport played for a few weeks in June will reunite 60+ years of differences.

If it means Best Korea's team gets taken out of the coal mines because they're somehow considered a host, let's go for it!

I doubt any player would come here for half a season, only to return to Europe for a full season. However, I know some teams have loaned younger players to MLS for a full season in order to get them more playing time.

MLS loan deals tend to be more with teams from the Americas, however. I also think they're usually loans with the option to buy - not necessarily for player development for the home club.

Let's remember Best Korea won the last world cup (thanks a lot Brazil), so its only natural.

Of course, the stadiums haven't been built, and (though extremely unlikely) god knows how they'd pay for them if the oil market collapses in 10 years.

sort of like how they do it now, slave labor from India.

The Euro leagues don't have much of an offseason. They run from early in August to late in May, with pre-season and touring running for most of July. Furthermore, even if a player were interested in a part-season loan to MLS, MLS would almost certainly want it to be the second half, which would leave the player cooling his heels for at least two months from the end of the MLS season to the opening of the winter transfer window in Europe (and that would stretch closer to three months in Germany which takes a winter break).

The inverse move works out better... get a couple months off after the season, go on loan to Europe in January, if you're Beckham you can play through the end of the season, then get a month-ish to rest, then play the back half of the MLS season. But MLS isn't so wild about that because then their player misses half the season—witness Donovan only being sent out for 10 wks last winter, which was nice for giving Everton a shot in the arm but didn't really make anybody but maybe LA happy. (Well, Donovan enjoyed the loan, but I think even he would have liked for it to go through the end of the EPL season.)

If England loses the bid, David Cameron will be doing a Maggie Thatcher styled crackdown on the Beeb. :D

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Read this one over on the Guardian:
"Qatari delegation members getting handshakes & some hugs from FIFA voters. Hmmmmm...."

And it sounds like the bettors have come in heavily for England winning 2018, with the Guardian blog reporting the odds as follows: England 8/11, Russia 13/5, Spainugal 5/1, Belgland 50/1

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Rumors starting to leak that England was the first country eliminated in 2018 voting.

Guess the Doctor will literally have to film in the police box. :D

If Qatar wins, it does prove money can buy you anything you want. (Except a Premiership Title for Man City. :D)

Maybe the bettors were wrong? That would be surprising, given the weakness of the Belgland bid that no one thought had a shot. Maybe it's like the recent Olympic voting, where they eliminated Chicago first, as it was the strongest competitor to Rio?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

The thing I can't figure out with the Quatar bid is how the hell they will deal with the heat... Will all the games be played in indoor stadiums?

Later at night, and they've supposedly designed a way to air condition open air stadiums.
