World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I dunno, with Xavi and Iniesta there already it seems like too many cooks in the mid field kitchen.
I guess it depends on A) how soon and how much they expect Xavi to decline now that he's past 30, B) whether they expect Iniesta's injury issues to persist, and C) how much time they expect Iniesta to spend as a winger rather than a midfielder. And I think they see Fabregas as one that got away, like Gerard Pique. (And maybe also Pepe Reina, though I think they're happy with Valdes at this point.) Still, I think you're right, adding Fabregas to the mix would be an embarrassment of riches, and I'm not sure how Guardiola would find playing time for everyone.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I would say more but I'm at work. Let me just say that's ridiculous (worse than Whatizit from 1996) and I would have been cool with the pigeons.

Honestly, its all being designed by people who no longer are proud of their own culture and uniqueness and pride themselves on being the top worldly humans of all time. That's the stuff that produces... whatever that is... one-eyed monsters.

You've got to think of the scene from 'Big' when Tom Hanks says "I don't get it", "what's so fun about a building?" The Big Ben idea had me think of that scene immediately.

Aside from the names, I don't recall much in the article talking about culture etc. It is about money. They need to sell $XX amount of crap to pay for one of the stadiums, as an example.

It is sad, but probably an economic reality that pushes the more thoughtful options to the side.

I actually don't buy that... I'm not sure how you can get kids to identify with that. More, I think its more that the comittee and those inolved want to be though of as appealing to children. They're forcing their idea out to be a model for kids... not for kids to buy them.

I don't think kids have ever had an attachment to something distinctly non-human. Even "whatizit" had 2 eyes, a mouth, and a cheery disposition.

edit: what I suspect, for the moment, is they may be trying to use the beanie babies model. Make up 50 different unique dolls and sell them to middle-aged women for $10 dollars a pop.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

The Brits do have a history of creating bizarre creatures that kids love...like Teletubbies. Soccer content: whoever wins the Champions League on Saturday will complete a treble.

I dunno, I think with the amount of competitions, playing three players for two spots isn't that big a deal. Just as an example, lets say this is a three week span:

Sat.: Domestic League: Iniesta, Xavi
Tues.: European: Xavi, Fabregas
Sat.: Domestic League: Fabregas, Iniesta
Tues.: Domestic Cup: Iniesta, Xavi
Sat.: Domestic League: Xavi, Fabregas
Tues.: European: Fabregas, Iniesta

I don't think any of the three would argue about playing time.

So...you're saying they should have chosen giant alien bugs?

You wouldn't think so.

But these are multi-millionaire athletes that we're talking about here. Chances are they will find something to complain about.

"Hey! You call this slop? Real slop has got chunks in it! This is more like gruel! And this Château le Blanc '68 is supposed to be served slightly chilled! This is room temperature! What do you think we are, animals?"

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

So David Villa from Valencia to Barca, and David Silva from Valencia to Real Madrid.

I think La Liga may be a two team race forever.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

It's not really soccer related, but I think you'll find the 2012 London Olympics mascots suitably terrifying.

Can we do this to the mascot?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I keep thinking about what Bradley is going to do to the roster this weekend and during the friendly next week. Tough choices ahead. Goff keeps hinting that a few players will be dropped on Sunday, so down to 26 or so players to pick from for the 1st friendly. Now, that's where it gets really interesting. Would he consider holding out the guys who have their spots cemented in place, like Donovan, Dempsey, Bocanegra, to be able to fit the more fringe guys into spots? At the same time though, wouldn't you want to see how the new guys play with those guys?

I really don't know what the best move is.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I know it's about four years old, but the previous post made me go watch this one next. Always have loved it:

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

New Nike commercial for the WC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idLG6jh23yE&feature=player_embedded

My favorite parts are probably the smirks on Howard and Donovan's faces and the Spanish team's rage.

Also love how Ronaldhino is featured (woops!)

I almost wonder if Nike won't pull some strings to see Ronaldinho make the team. It would probably require one of the original 23 to get "hurt", and Dunga doesn't take any crap from anyone, so I doubt it happens. With Nike involved though, I wouldn't exactly be 100% surprised.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I think we should be running this on English TV:

You're not going to intimidate anyone with Sacha Kljestan's hair flapping in the breeze.
