Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

David Villa is moving from Valencia to Barcelona for 32.4 million pounds.

Next target, Liverpool's Javier Mascherano. :(

Wow, not what I was expecting.

I guess there's something of a vacancy with Henry on his way out, but with Hleb and Kerrison coming back from loan and Jeffren coming up from the youth system, there wasn't exactly a shortage of options to supplement Messi and Bojan and Pedro and Ibra.

But then, by that logic they don't really "need" Mascherano either, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign him too.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Ibra's probably on his way out as well, if they can convince someone to take him.

Hopefully not Man City.

Well with Real Madrid being the Yankees, does that make Barcelona the Red Sox?

They don't need Mascherano at all, but we're hoping that we get Ya Ya Toure and cash in exchange.

*sigh*... yeah, they probably are. They'd probably finish second if they just went with players from their own youth system and nobody else (Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Pique, Puyol, Pedro, Bojan, Sergio, Valdes) but why stop there, I guess? :o

That would be a pretty decent exchange for Liverpool IMO; Toure is a couple of years older, but he's also a massive physical presence with good ball skills and a bit more positional versatility than Mascherano.

My friend Nick wrote a World Cup preview on his sports blog and it's worth a click for those of us who (like me) can't wait for it to get started.

United may be quiet this off-season thanks to the problems the Glazers are having. I do think they need some defensive cover because Rio and Evra get hurt a lot.

Chris Smalling has lots of potential (SAF wouldn't have signed him otherwise) but he's not there yet.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

But when you read the article, it makes perfect sense. It was clearly stated, they hope to sell a lot of merchandise.

Men 24-45 (which I'm assuming most of us are) probably don't buy the mascot type stuff no matter what the mascot looks like. So, the fact that we don't like it is probably confirmation that they are on the right path. If kids like it then people will buy it. That they put a backstory identifying them with towns of historic note will get them some of the adult buy-in needed to get their wallets open; the kids won't care about Lord Muck from 1862 but if they like something then the parents will follow with the cash.

Time will tell if their research really identified what kids want, hopefully for them they were smart enough to do that research in more than one country.

Another factor will be staying power, no pun intended towards the previous comments about their resemblance to a specific body part, do kids still like it by 2012?

It may be this is what you get when (1) you design art by committee, and (2) you need to create an image that depends on no cultural knowledge, like the "Human" in Community.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

It's not really soccer related, but I think you'll find the 2012 London Olympics mascots suitably terrifying.

I would say more but I'm at work. Let me just say that's ridiculous (worse than Whatizit from 1996) and I would have been cool with the pigeons.

Honestly, its all being designed by people who no longer are proud of their own culture and uniqueness and pride themselves on being the top worldly humans of all time. That's the stuff that produces... whatever that is... one-eyed monsters.

Looks like Fabregas will be heading from Arsenal to Barcelona. And I, for one, approve mightily.
