World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Messi's diving makes Sidney Crosby look like a tough guy.

Messi has several excuses for his antics: 1) he's Argentinian. The toughest Argentinian I've ever seen is Javier Mascherano and he's still whiny. :D

2) He weighs 110 pounds. If anyone was allowed to tackle him legitimately, he would be broken in half.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Do you want me to try and keep it spoiler free? Or without it DVR'd will you just follow the score update thread?
Nah, thanks, appreciate the offer but I'm going to listen online.

Holy crap Messi has 3 goals already?

Yeah, the first was Silvestre's stupidity but a brilliant strike. His second goal was the ball ping ponging around and Clichy being stupid and going to the man double covered instead of going to cover Messi.

Third goal was Clichy being completely moronic, playing a high line and playing Messi onside and a nice chip over Almunia who had no chance.

Now he just misses his fourth goal. Dude could easily have 5 goals so far tonight.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Looks like United is the only hope for English clubs and they have some work to do tomorrow without Rooney.

Barcelona's three forwards in combination probably weigh about as much as Bendtner. Those are some tiny dudes on the field.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Bendtner might have a goal but he's horrid. Guy has no first touch. For that matter, he might not have a second touch either.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I'd like Barca a lot more if they didn't fake injuries in the most obvious ways. It's really disgraceful.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Sounds like Rosicky and Pedro missed golden opportunities a few minutes apart just now.

Edit: And then Bendtner hits the inside of the post on a chance that the Barcelona commentators say was wrongly ruled offside.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Now Keita elbows an Arsenal player in the head and he walks away quickly. I mean he knew he wouldn't be booked.

Arsenal wouldn't win regardless, but I'm amazed this ref can blow a whistle while he has Barca down his throat.

Then he lets Barca take their free kick super quickly and the guy was offside, but he just misses at the far post. Would have been absurd on several levels if that goal had been scored there.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Sounds like this makeshift Barcelona defense is determined to let Arsenal create opportunities to get a goal back and Arsenal is determined to squander those chances. Maybe I should be happy I'm not watching this, from an entertainment value perspective.

The first game was better played by both teams. Ironically I'll say Barcelona played much better last time around and didn't get what they deserved while Arsenal was lucky. I'd say this game Arsenal has the misfortune of being down 3-1 but Barcelona has taken advantage of the chances they've been given.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I keep on hearing great things about Charlie Davies' rehab and I'm getting more optimistic about his prospects for South Africa. That being said, what's the starting squad look like for the US now? The injuries and various friendlies have made me forget what the Confed lineup was.

Our "everyone healthy" lineup would look something like this:
Howard - Bocanegra, Onyewu, DeMerit, Cherundolo - Donovan, Bradley, Clark, Dempsey - Altidore, Davies

There's room for some shifting depending on form and opponent; against England, I might expect to see Bornstein on the left to match up with Lennon, which would bump Bocanegra either to the middle (with DeMerit going to the bench) or the bench. Spector might play ahead of 'Dolo. Edu might pass Clark. Goodson might pass DeMerit. Tim Ream is getting a lot of plaudits for his first couple of games for the cows, and it seems like an awfully long shot for him to make the World Cup squad, but stranger things have happened.

As far as injury cover goes... Goodson looks to be the first backup in central defense. Forwards have been shuffled, I could see any of Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, Robbie Findley, Jeff Cunningham, or Herculez Gomez taking a second forward spot if Davies isn't ready to go.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

That's 4 for Messi. Gets his own rebound and then Almunia has a gaping 5 hole and he buries it. Almunia is a horrid keeper.

Barca dealt with Inter pretty handily in the group stage (back in the days when I remembered to set my DVR for things), but anything can happen in this kind of competition, especially if Barcelona continue to be without Puyol and Pique and Abidal.
