I think its a good decision but i'm not really sure who replaces him. Rio is a disaster and should not be captain, plus with his back problems who knows what his status will be going forward. Roo is a bit too young and already has so much pressure on him. I think Gerrard would be the best choice but he isn't really in the best form right now.

Beckham? Not your best player but somebody that might have the ability to pull the guys together and manage the egos etc. Might be a good idea to go with experience and the safe choice vs. trying to force some other arrangement.

You need to pick someone who is at least a first choice player. Beckham wouldn't even make the trip to South Africa if it was my choice, and he's nowhere near starting midfielder quality. Therefore he would be a terrible choice..

It's between Rio and Gerrard and Rooney. Rio is the choice that will bear the least damage in the press. Rooney plays poorly when he stresses himself out. If he's captain I'm worried he will succumb to the pressure.

Gerrard should have been captain two years ago. But now he's suffered a stunning loss of form. I know he's had leg problems this year but this has been unbelievably bad by his standards.

I do like his leadership though.

Does anyone know what the story with Setanta is? I wasn't able to watch the United game this morning because they aren't selling subscriptions to Setanta-I anymore or something like that. They also had some sort of press release saying they got bought out by FSC.

I'll add to Drew's question, as FSC is saying that their games are available live in HD. Is that widely available and Time Warner just sucks for me, or what?

Ok... Setanta was no diff for me this morning than usual (but I already had it before this weekend so don't have any idea why it would be changed for this weekend). Man Utd-Pompey was on just like normal and now Premier League Live (the reaction panel to the game just shown is on Setanta) is on.

As for FSC going HD... the word is that the full HD all the time goes 3/1 and that they are showing sporadic HD games right now until then. Spurs-Villa should be in HD, too, at 12:30, so I will let you know in a half hour what the deal is with that. Hull City vs Man City was NOT in HD, btw. (I have DirecTv).

32 refs picked for the World Cup. List includes TWO Mexicans, Martin Hansson (the Henry handball ref), Englishman Howard Webb, and no Americans.

How does the Henry handball ref get picked? Sheesh...

Looks like Liverpool is back to respectability. 4th place here we come, woooooo.

Maybe we can win the UEFA Europa League Cup Thing to make this season a minor success.

I assume we'll avoid those two. As much as I hate everything about Mexican Soccer, they do have a few refs who have had decent games we've played in.

What did Howard Webb screw up again? I seem to remember him connected to some sort of scandal...

Setanta is running out of money. Consequently, FSI is discontinuing their sublicense of EPL content in the U.S. and starting up a new station (FS+) to distribute the stuff that they will no longer be sublicensing to Setanta.

As far as I know, FSI has concluded that it's more cost effective for them to simply retain their own licensed content and start up a new station than to buy out Setanta.

As far as the FSC in HD thing goes... FSC is available to cable and satellite providers in HD right now, but as far as I know, few if any of them have a carriage agreement and are transmitting it to their customers. Rumor suggests that Dish will likely have FSC in HD very soon, and DirecTV will likely have it as soon as their new satellite goes into service (right now, it's aloft and in testing).

Because it wasn't his mistake. He was in a reasonable position on the field (if perhaps not an ideal position) in which he couldn't see the offense.

The AR who is the one who actually screwed up the call isn't going.

The real headscratchers are the passing over of a couple of Aussies for a couple of New Zealand refs, and the selection of Aguilar from CONCACAF. Aguilar is nowhere near the quality appropriate for a World Cup.

Villa is putting up some clean sheets lately but yesterday's game is no way to go through life...very gritty defensive performance...looked like Tottenham had an extra attacker on the ice the whole game.

As Tottenham peppered them with corners and shots I kept waiting for the one pass to Gabby that would create the miracle...instead Villa made more bad passes in the midfield than I have ever seen and just couldn't get control. Downing didn't have his best game.

At one point in the first, Fox put up stats showing that in the previous 5 minutes Tottenham had possession for 72% of the time...don't know the stat in the second half but it easily could have been 70% for the whole half.

Still, it was a big point for AVFC. They are going to have line in the trainers room today, Collins, Heskey, Young (A), and Dunne all looked like they were hobbling at some point.

Yeah, they didn't look great, and a point from White Hart Lane is a good result.
