World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I don't know if anyone caught this, but the Kansas City Wizards finally got their stadium deal done, and the renders for the project look very nice.

That leaves just San Jose, Houston, DC United, and New England without their own stadiums (I'm not counting Seattle who might as well just stay put and Vancouver who seems to keep changing their plans). The latter two look like they have promising projects in the works and the latter two, well the latter two have a lot of work left to do and in New England's case, may not care all that much.

Yeah, that KC Stadium should be pretty nice when they get it done.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Arsenal are going out... now 3-1 Stoke... and I think that this wasn not unplanned by Wenger. He did not start 3 of his first choice backs today... Gallas, Veremaelen, Clichy... and he also did not start Arshavin, Eduardo, Ramsey, or Almunia either.

The obvious thought is that he was willing to stay in the competition as long as it does not compromise their effort in going for the league championship. So, in other words, if we can win with our "B" and "C" guys at some positions, fine... we'll stay in the FA Cup. If we can't win with those guys, fine... we will be better set for the league run and also for the Champions League.

Can't say as I blame him too much.... but I do think it would have been fun to stick around in the FA Cup a bit longer this yr. Looks like it is a free walk to the FAC for Chelski now.....

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I'm of two minds about the FA Cup these days. I think it's sad that the top teams basically treat it as a joke, degrading a tournament with great history and tradition (and sucking some fun out of what could be a dramatic, enjoyable tournament).

On the other hand, the Arsenals of the world rolling over in the FA Cup means we get to see more of the mid- and lower-table teams play in the final rounds, which could lead to more excitement as you know how much it would mean to those clubs to win it.

Yeah... I really don't think Wenger was going to allow his "A" team to be depleted -- both from a rest sense and potential injury sense --- by this competition. I do think he likes the FA Cup (hell... Arsenal have 10 FA Cup titles, so the Gunners clearly like it), but this year, with the league on the line and the Champions League firmly in our sights, there is no chance of risking either of those bigger competitions.

Also.... Arsenal have been massively injured this year. 9 regulars have been out of the line-up at points this year and we are still without several key guys (like van Persie and Bendtner up front). Clichy is just back and so are Denilson, Ramsey, and Fabregas.

The FA Cup is a perfect competition for a team like Stoke City. They will never challenge for the league title and have little shot at Europe, either. But, they are a Prem side and will have better players than most of the teams in the competition.

The FA Cup is like a glorified version of the League Cup (Carling Cup) to me. The bigger teams also field much weaker sides for that, too. Not that it is right, but they know where their bread is buttered and glory comes from winning the league and from doing very well in the Champions League.... not from winning the FA Cup.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Draw for the FA Cup Fifth Round:

Wolves or Crystal Palace vs. Aston Villa
Man City vs. Stoke
Derby County vs. Birmingham City
Bolton Wanderers vs. Spurs/Leeds
Chelsea vs. Cardiff City
Fulham vs. Notts County/Wigan
Reading vs. West Brom
Southampton vs. Portsmouth

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Watching this Fulham-Accrington match and the color man sounds just like Jared Harris from Mad Men.
Ah, good call, I was trying to figure out what that guy's voice reminded me of.

Also, I think Fulham would've lost that game if the Accrington defender hadn't taken the red card. Although it's tough to say for sure that they wouldn't still have run out of gas from all the pressing they did even if they played with eleven men the whole match. A little lucky to be through, in any case, I'd say, and especially to have drawn (most likely) Wigan in the next round.

I decided starting today to make my rooting interests clear via signature.

There shall be no confusion as to which soccer teams I support. :D

Plus I was tired of my old sig.

Indeed the shark did. Although now its nice to root for them because they seem to be a fairly clean program and occassionally field a competitive team.

Like most people when I first started watching sports, the teams that were either a) hometown, b) good, c) family tradition, or d) in the news a lot are the ones that left an impression on me.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I'm sad to see the FA Cup turned into a 2nd level cup. I still think it's higher than the League Cup, but the Big 4 could care less about it. They think it's another set of fixtures to worry about. Teams like a Spurs or a Stoke are the ones that will be winning the Cup from here on out unless United and the others decide to play like they mean it.

This seems to be something of an overreaction to the squad that Wenger played this past weekend, if you ask me. One of Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea has won 18 of the last 21 FA Cups.

I think the bigger teams have enough depth that often times they are able to rest players and still survive....and then when they get to the later stages, they'll be able to play more of a full lineup when actually winning the Cup becomes more of a likliehood. Also, by March-April a teams ambition in the league and Europe may be more clear, making a strong effort toward winning the Cup more of a goal than it was earlier.

Oh and in ACON Egypt shocks Cameroon 3-1 in extra time, including a goal that never crossed the line but the linesman blew the call.

Cameroon outplayed Egypt for almost the entire match.

And to the delight of just about everyone its Algeria versus Egypt in the semis. Hello footie violence.

Blood makes the grass grow.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

The other semi is Nigeria-Ghana. Nigeria needed penalties to beat Zambia (who looked like the better team, frankly).

Yeah, Zambia looked way better. But their goalie couldn't make a single save in penalties. Though he scored his penalty...sigh.

I think Ghana should be considered the favorite now.
