World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I guess this is Song Association/ World Soccer again. Still no word on Rafa. A loss here may end it all. Any word if Maxi will play?

Interesting rumor in the Sun today.... Babel for Kenwyne Jones.... hard to think this will happen, though, as Babel is nowhere near as good as Jones. If Rafa pulls this off, it will have to be Babel plus about 3-5m pounds....

Big pressure now on the Scousers as Torres is gone for 6 weeks, Gerrard for 2, and Benayoun for 4. This is gonna be pretty tense up at Anfield for the next month. Can Rafa survive?

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Stoke City 1, Liverpool 1... and the Huth goal at 90 minutes was the 13th goal (of the 26 this year allowed by Liverpool) off a set-piece. That is brutal. No way you can contend for honors with that sort of defending of set-piece deliveries.

Bad call early in this game again... Lucas went down in the box off a clear challenge from Higginbotham of Stoke. It looked obvious. The ref not only did not award the penalty, he gave Lucas a yellow card for diving. Brutal. As there was obvious contact, I don't see how the referee could have come to this conclusion.

Tough break for the Scousers.... as the Rafa Hot Seat temperature just ratcheted up a few more degrees...

Or being 100% Indian.*

*The real Indian, not those Native Americans who think because some idiot from Genoa realizes he would be hung if he came back to Spain without actually finding India and called their ancestors Indians it actually made them Indians.

Careful...

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

It's nice to see a fellow MLS fan in here. I'm a Rev fan who sees their RFK game every season. Any thoughts on yesterday's SuperDraft, trading away Fred, etc.?

How about 4 Demon Deacons in the first 14 picks?

Having seen each probably 30 times in the past three years, my thoughts

Ike Opara (#3, SJ): Absolute stud. Future national teamer. Very, very solid in the back, CRAZY athleticism. I was surprised he opted for MLS instead of looking for a European opportunity.

Zack Schilawski (#9, NE): While I was happy one of the Deacs went to the Revs, I don't know that Schilawski is going to be an impact player in the MLS. That 5'10", 165 lbs. listing seems generous. Great finisher though.

Corben Bone (#13, Chicago): I don't know how he fell this far. Even with his supposedly "bad" combine (wth can you learn from a combine in soccer?!), I actually always liked him better than Sam Cronin who went to Toronto as a high pick last year.

Austin Da Luz (#14, RBNY): This is my "Really?!" moment of the weekend. I never saw Da Luz as an MLS player. He has all the on the ball skills you'd ever want but he's SOOOOO tiny. He's listed as the same size as Schilawski, but he's easily 3 or 4 inches shorter and probably 10 pounds (at least) lighter. He doesn't defend, he never plays a full game, I don't really see it.

Back from my trip...relaxing by watching Man City at Everton. Everton players have the weirdest haircuts :D

Cool to think I was outside this stadium too!

Bid.... welcome home! I hope you had fun even though there were considerable weather problems for most of the matches, I bet.

How did Donovan look in this game? From the match report it seemed like he went almost the full 90.

Very good. Got taken out to a big ovation, the Everton fans had a few "USA" chants, and after he got taken out there was an audible "When the Yanks Go Marching In" song.

He really has no reason to do it at this point, but he could make a longterm go of it in England.

Good to hear. I no he just got paid in MLS but I wouldn't mind seeing a permanent move and make Everton the next Fulham.

The treatment this season by referees has been almost as bad as the injury bug.

TBA... you know I am no Liverpool fan...but even I feel sorry for how Liverpool has been taken out to the woodshed by the officials this year. I would say that your team and my team are in a race for "Redheaded Stepchil of the Year".

And as if right on cue, Bolton keeper Jaaskelainen clearly trips Fabregas and does not touch the ball first..... penalty? Should have been? Did referee Phil Dowd call one? Nope. Simple "Play on!" is all. Bolton vs Arsenal will require a dam n near mugging to get a call... but we knew that coming in. Flip the teams and I am not so sure the call goes the same way. Just saying.

Aston villa against West Ham this year...1 point. When they finish 6th again they can look at least at those 2 games as a cause.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

This team may be ruined before it even gets to South Africa. Davies, Gooch, now Dempsey? Terrible news.

Maybe Bradley can get hurt too as a sort of counterbalance.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I don't think you can really count the US out just yet. Algeria looks like a circus in the ANC and Slovenia is unknown. (Even though they did beat Russia.) I still think there is a chance to advance.
