World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Jmh... no, it is not my team, but if you saw the game and realize its implications, I think you could see how it could be construed as a pretty significant upset/defeat. Seeing as this is SAF's first 3rd round exit -- and to a lower league team at that --- it is a fairly big thing.

And, actually, I would have put my level of excitement much closer to that of the Sharapova-level.... You are right, it is not my team. I was happy for Leeds, glad that Man Utd is out of the competition, and also glad Leeds wiped that smug look off SAF's face. He looked like he was ready to rip off somone's head after the game. That was a much better look for him, IMO.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Here's the FA Cup Fourth Round draw:

Preston North End vs. Chelsea
Southampton vs. Ipswich Town
Reading or Liverpool vs. Burnley
Millwall or Derby County vs. Brentford or Doncaster Rovers
Bristol City or Cardiff City vs. Leicester City
Notts County or Forest Green Rovers vs. Wigan Athletic
West Bromwich Albion vs. Plymouth Argyle or Newcastle United
Everton vs. Nottingham Forest or Birmingham City
Accrington Stanley or Gillingham vs. Fulham
Bolton Wanderers vs. Sheffield United or Queens Park Rangers
Portsmouth or Coventry City vs. Sunderland AFC
Aston Villa vs. Brighton & Hove Albion
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Crystal Palace
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Leeds United AFC
Stoke City vs. Arsenal
S****horpe United vs. Manchester City

This is an interesting draw, from my perspective. Fulham and Gillingham fans have bad blood, dating back to the murder of a Fulham fan outside Priestfield after a league match between the two clubs in 1998, when both were in Division Two (now League One). The UK-based Fulham fans i know have no interest in a trip to Kent later on this month.

On the other hand, Fulham and Accrington Stanley have never played each other in a competitive match, not in the league, not in the FA Cup, not in the league cup, not the current incarnation of Accrington Stanley that has been around since 1968, not the original version that existed from 1891 to 1962, never. This is clearly the preferable draw, and not just because they're a division down from Gillingham.

Theoretically, today. He's been granted a work permit, the transfer window is open, and he traveled to England yesterday.

Practically, I'm sure it's going to wait at least a couple of days for him to get a little integrated into the side in training.

Sounds like he could make his debut against Arsenal on Saturday...

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Donovan comes into maybe a good situation for him to make an impact, with Everton dealing with injuries to Mikel Arteta, Louis Saha and Jô. David Moyes doesn't have a problem with American players, either; he's had Timmy playing for him for a few years now and was the first manager to bring Brian McBride over to England, back when he was with Preston North End back in 2000.

Leeds over ManU

Leeds over ManU

It's a rare day that i cheer for Leeds United, but i must say that was a well played match and a great accomplishment for the club. Leeds have been absolutely dominant in League One this year and i believe they would be an upper-midtable team in the Championship. This result works well for me as a Norwich fan. If anybody hadn't noticed Jermaine Beckford before this weekend, they have now. Hopefully he'll go in the January window (Newcastle are reported to be after him), and they'll be a bit weakened in their strikeforce. Leeds also now have at least four more matches to play from here out than the Canaries do, and the fixture congestion could wear them down a bit. Regardless, it was a great game for Leeds, and i'm a happy fan who's finally seeing his team up in the automatic promotion spots after a nightmare start to the season. All's well for the moment :)

Landon Donovan-star of Mexican commercials:

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/N01hwFmpkIU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/N01hwFmpkIU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

From Soccer by Ives:

"For the Spanish-deficient, the premise of the commercial is that Donovan is sneaking into Mexico to play the Mexican lottery because it's easier to win. "Winning in Mexico is much easier," Donovan says at one point, drawing the ire of the border guard"

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Oh man, can we retroactively postpone the Stoke-Fulham match due to weather? Fulham are playing embarrassingly poorly and are down 3-0 late in the first half.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Better effort in the second half, but Fulham short. Goals from Damien Duff in the 61nd minute and Clint Dempsey in the 82nd got back within one, but couldn't find the equalizer. Ah well. Saturday against Portsmouth is a good opportunity to pick up points, at least.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Anyone else watching Milan-Genoa on FSC?

I HIGHLY recommend finding video of Borriello's second in the 60th minute. Great volley.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Bobby Zamora got hurt, Paul Konchesky got hurt, Brede Hangeland got hurt again, but at least Clint Dempsey scored a wonderful goal.

I was there! :D

I was next to the Fulham fans, who kept chanting even though it was only 10 loud ones.

I got a Stoke City scarf to boot

Missed that Dempsey goal because I had to catch a bus then a train :(

I'm hope with the flu and have been watching on and off. As hard as I try I really can't get very excited about Serie A. The pace is just so slow compared to England.

Whoa crap, if I knew you were going to catch a Fulham match I would've put you in touch with some folks over there. Are you in London now?

I gave up on Serie A as soon as I got Foxsports World at my parents house in 1999. The German and English leagues just looked so much more fluid and exciting in comparison. The Italian love of smoke bombs that makes watching the game on TV difficult didn't help.
