Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Blackburn played fairly well in the 2nd half, but by then it was too late. Losing 3-1 to Villa.

Although this will be fresh in their mind when they play again in 3 days. So I'd expect a better outcome.

OK, 2-1 Villa works for me;)

UTV!!!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Wow... Leeds still with the 1-0 lead at Old Trafford.... after 70 minutes... game on now!!

Even getting a replay back at Elland Road would be a HUGE accomplishment for Leeds.

Man United attacking in waves now, though.... gotta think it is just a matter of time before the goal comes.

Edit: OOOOHHH!! Jermaine Beckford in alone and flashes just wide of the left post for Leeds at 78 minutes. That would have punched the 4th Round ticket for sure for Leeds.

For those that don't think that the FA Cup is what it used to be.... well, this match is proof positive of what it still can be on its best day. A phenomenal game. This is an upset for the ages... it hast to be.

Kudos to Leeds United... they move on. Man Utd will rue all the missed chances and now have to concentrate on the leauge and the Champions League.

Minnows? They'd be a midtable championship side. I think that to some degree the result is deserved because of what happened at wembley last year. United was in the semi's and completely threw it away. If Vida hadn't have gotten hurt during warmups United probably would've won, brown was awful.

"Minnows" might be a bit harsh, but reality is is that they ARE a League One team. Period. Man Utd + Old Trafford + a League One side = one of the biggest upsets in this tournament's history. It has to be. NO ONE saw this coming... no one.

SAF before the game: "I always look forward to games between these two teams. It's disappointing Leeds have gone so far down, but they'll be back in the next two years. Our players should look upon it as a big game atmosphere, and they've all sampled it before."

Leeds boss Simon Grayson before the game: "We won't change how we go about our business for anyone, as they wouldn't. We're here to win the game and we'll give it a go. The rivalry is there for everyone to know about, not so long ago it was a Premier League fixture, but hopefully it'll be a cracking game and atmosphere."

SAF AFTER THE GAME: "I must admit, I didn't expect that performance. If you don't start and the other team does, you're always up against it. Leeds had a far bigger appetite than us for the game. You need a a bit of luck and they got it, but they deserved it because they played really well. The referee gave five minutes of injury time and that's an insult to the game, to the players out there."

Laughable... he has to get that last gibe in there. Never mind his team bit it nearly all game long ... especially Wes Brown. He barely can give Leeds the credit they deserve. He has to rip the ref at the end. What did he want?? 8 minutes of extra time? 10 minutes? Come on, Sir Alex, you are better than that.

Wes Brown was absolutely horrible, but in his defense, he wasn't expecting to play. Fergie said Leeds played 'really well', what more do you want him to say? I must say that i'm a lot happier losing in the third round than just giving up in the semis like they did last year. People talk about United missing ronaldo but Hargo is really the player they miss. Hopefully he can get back to full health in the next month or so.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Calling 5 minutes of stoppage an insult to the game and the players is a pretty strong statement.

Ironic that ManU is the team most complained about for getting liberal amounts of stoppage time when they are behind/tied at home and here is SAF whining about it.

Some managers would say they should have won the game in the first 90 and not have left it to how much stoppage time they were granted...especially in a big upset. Dare I say, most managers??

SAF is a git. They call it ManU time for a reason...

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Yeah, the time they play should have nothing to do with actual stoppages. They should just have a three minute maximum:rolleyes:

Sorry buddy, watched more EPL games than you have and been following the league religiously for decades now, its a running gag in the English media that there are absurd added minutes for ManU, especially when they are losing...and one guy actually showed the added time in games involving ManU while they were winning and losing and the discrepancy was vast.

I think its absurd with most referees giving more than 3 minutes unless there are injuries or other unforeseen delays.

Craig mentioned that its about 30 seconds a sub, so usually when 6 subs are used you have your three minutes right there. I don't have a problem with more than that if warranted.

And for SAF to complain about the added time not being enough was just absurd coming from the guy who gets more added time when he needs it than anyone!

Totally agree about Hargreaves. A holding midfielder like him is totally invaluable. Arsenal so miss Mathieu Flamini it is ridiculous. Those guys are super valuable to a team and really help the chemistry and fluidity of play.

Settle down, Beavis.

What's wrong with this one? Seemed adequate... as it is by far the upset of the tournament and it is a pretty huge one at that. Consider what Leeds did and you might actually agree.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

And the 5 ties played today.... and how I did....

Chelsea 5-0 Watford..... (correct outcome)
Man Utd 0-1 Leeds United (wrong outcome..but did predict 2-1 MU and said it would be very close)
Sheff Utd 1-1 QPR... replay forthcoming at QPR and still could be right)
Tranmere 0-1 Wolves... (correct outcome and correct goal diff)
West Ham 1-2 Arsenal... (correct outcome)

3 games correct... 1 wrong... 1 replay still to come.... 1 game with corr. goal differential.

So far I am at 18 correct... 4 wrong.... 6 replays coming... 3 perfect score predictions and 3 correct goal differentials predicted.

Settle down, Beavis.

"Man Utd had never before lost in the third round of the Cup - or been knocked out of it by a lower-division side - during Sir Alex Ferguson's 23-year reign as manager, but they began 2010 on the wrong end of their biggest upset in this competition since they were dumped out by Bournemouth in 1984." (from BBC Sport by Chris Bevan)

You are right. No sense trumpeting a game like this.

Don't listen to him, he knows nothing. This is an amazing achievement for Leeds.

It was a big upset, yes. I understand. But here's an appropriate level of excitement, bearing in mind that it wasn't your team that won the game:

And here's the level of excitement where you were:
