It is a rather anti climatic trophy.
As a referee, in another sport, those "participation trophies" are actually quite cherished. It's a big deal to referee a final and it's nice to have something for it.The silver and bronze things are so 80's Olympics. Participation trophys for the Ref's as well

I have to disagree a little with you there. I was a high school basketball referee for 17 years. It is VERY political and just getting to a playoff game is a tremendous accomplishment. At least they rate you on merit now and you have a shot. Back in the day you had no chance unless you "knew" enough people. So I think it is very significant for them.
Going back to 2010 gold medal, there's enough talent where we should do better at the senior level going forward.
As proof of that all you had to see was the tears in the Canadians' eyes when it was over. As much as I loved seeing the USA win, I actually felt bad for the Canadian players. They gave all they had, and more...it means SO much to them and their fans.Agreed. But it beats losing.![]()
It's still political to an extent but yeah there is a lot more merit involved now.I have to disagree a little with you there. I was a high school basketball referee for 17 years. Well Bettman and co. are putting a stop to that. Hopefully the NHLPA keeps pressing because the US would have a real shot at gold in 2018.Going back to 2010 gold medal, there's enough talent where we should do better at the senior level going forward.
A classic. All I can think of is Ed Hochuli's "Yes, there are penalties in the pro bowl." Reffing is VERY tough work, and to even get a chance to work the tournament has to be a great thing.

What a great game and great tournament. Some of the most entertaining hockey I have watched in ages. Indeed, it is a shame that one of these teams had to lose. Both teams gave it everything they had - the big "MO" flowed back and forth throughout the game.
What a letdown to get to the end of that overtime, with chances going both ways, knowing a goal was coming for someone soon....then have to sit through a GD shootout to decide a winner and a loser to this incredible game...
Does the NBA have a free throw contest to decide a playoff game if it is tied?
Does the NFL have an extra point kicking contest to decide a playoff game if it is tied?
Do PGA players EVER have a putting contest to decide a match if it is tied?
Do they EVER have a home run derby to decide a baseball game?
NO, they all just keep playing the game as it was meant to be played until someone wins...
So WhyTF does IIHF insist on deciding the winner of an international tournament with a cheap-azz gimicky play that only happens in the course of a game if a significant infraction has occurred??? I have no effing idea either... What a travesty...
Congrats to both teams on a great gold medal match. Neither deserved to lose like that. BTW, no sour grapes here - I am a die hard USA fan. Just felt an incredible sense of "kissing your sibling" at the end of this one...
Someone get Greenway a band-aid and all of Canada a hankie.
