Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Some of these kill me.

Last year, Amherst stayed in the top three for the first three weeks of the season without playing a game simply because they won the NESCAC the year before and for no other reason, even when teams around them in the top 10 were winning and/or losing. Do we really think the poll is going to take into consideration nearly the amount that we have all taken into consideration here? Perhaps we're giving them a little too much credit.

I think everyone agrees that at the D-III level the uncertainty of incoming recruits makes a pre-season poll very unscientific. However, it is fun to try to anticipate who will do well, and then look back after a month of action to see who had it right and who had it wrong.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

1. Gustavus-no reason to downgrade team that was #1 up until the RF upset
2. Elmira-Great depth last year offsets senior losses. Fewer penalty kills with #23 gone.
3. Amherst-Even if Elek is gone, Hu is no slouch. Lots of returning firepower and Plumer has shown he can impact games.
4. RIT-Scoring dominated by underclassmen last year. They are back.
5. Middlebury-It wasn't the amount of points from Cellino, but when she got them, that Midd will miss. Weak on D last year and lost Dumont. Love their goalies.
6. River Falls-Campbell proved her mettle against Elmira. No significant losses to graduation. Won't sneak up on Gustavus again.
7. Plattsburgh-I'm amazed that I'm ranking them this low. Based on tradition I assume their frosh will shine.
8. Adrian-Gotta stick them in so if they do good I can say I told you so.
9. St. Thomas-Gotta include anyone that beat Amherst last year.
10. Norwich-Benefit of the doubt for ECAC-East winner.
10. Manhattanville-perennial contender can't have second off year
10. Trinity-Cause I like 'em.

Norwich-Benefit of the doubt for ECAC-East Winner? How about returning the entire team plus the addition of the new recruits.

I completely agree. As to the recruits, we will have to see how the coaches did. Platts, Amherst, Middlebury and Elmira always seem to fill their slots well, so I expect they will return to the top slots from the east. I presume the same can be said for GA and RF. It will be fun to see at the holiday break how the teams come out of the gate. Also, the tournament on Jan 3 and 4 at Middlebury with Midd, Amherst, Elmira and Plattsburgh will have a quick impact on the polls right after the break.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Amazing that you had the time and inclination to do this. I do have one comment however. You have demonstrated the impact of the scoring from the graduated players. However, you did not factor in the goals against impact for teams losing their goalies. This would seem to hurt Plattsburgh, Elmira, RIT and Superior. Also have to consider Elek at Amherst for this purpose since she is not returning. On the flip side, when considering this goalie situation the teams that have the most successful returning goaltending would seem to be Middlebury, Gustavus, and River Falls.

I think the loss of Nespor in superior isn't as big of a deal as some of the other schools. She was splitting time with Kunzlemann who was an All-American two years ago(98% certain). Kunzlemann has slightly better career stats...I guess it will depend on how well she handles being the lone goaltender..unless Laughlin decides to have her split with Amy Meyer who was a D1 transfer from UMD.

I know we aren't supposed to start any east-west comments but it is pretty hilarious seeing many of the polls already seriously discounting the west...remember you will be traveling out that way this year for the FF.

I'm not sure how you come to the conclusion that there is Western discounting going on. Last year was a down year for Superior, Stevens Point was down AND graduated most of their firepower, and that leaves GAC, St. Thomas, and RF. Who's missing?

I'm not sure those teams were down...just that they beat up on eachother and that hurts in the long run.

So Superior losses to Concordia, St. Benes, and Eau Claire was heavyweights slugging it out?

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

I watched Plattsburgh play their alumni game last week. Coach Houle has added a couple of real quick "scooters" that'll impact play up front. Defense may be the biggest concern; and I think the goaltending will be fine once the dust settles. Should be fun to watch this year.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

I agree! They could be huge with the expanded playoff format in the NCHA.

You make it back north or still sunning yourself in AZ?:D

I'm guessin everyone should circle December 18-19 on their calendar for Adrian @ RIT...will tell us alot me thinks.

7. Plattsburgh -- filling holes with tradition
8. RIT -- tough break last year, and I know I'll hear about it if I don't slot them, but they'll have to prove it all over again

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Hmm, I didn't realize Elek is not returning. USCHO has her listed on the roster.

The story was broke over the summer that Elek wasn't going to be returning. From what I remember I believe she said she wanted to concentrate on academics for her senior year and she has accomplished everything there is to accomplish playing D-III hockey.

She might be one of the 10 or so pre-med majors on Amherst I remember coach Plumer talking about at the Frozen Four.

Also, USCHO's initial "rosters" are simply deleting the seniors from the previous year and moving everyone up a year. Go to collegehockeystats.net for the official rosters that are submitted by the schools once they are finalized.

They also got the transfers right too.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

1) Amherst-deep squad, returns 5/6 of their outstanding D; will really miss Harrington; Hu should be ready for prime time; will the two game NESCAC schedule hurt them?

2) Gustavus Adolphus-what do I know about out West?

3) Wisconsin-River Falls-ditto

4) Middlebury-improved D will allow the Wright-Bloom tandem to shine

5) Plattsburgh-lost a lot in Blanchard, Bywater, and O'Connor and Khan and Brien on D, but their last DI goalie transfer worked out pretty well and they play Elmira, RIT, Manhattanville and Midd at home.

6) RIT-huge loss with Owczarczak (one of the best D in DIII) transfer; do they have the goaltending?

7) Elmira-only exhibition, but the 4-2 loss to Cambridge Jr. Fury begs the goaltending question; brutal schedule with RIT, Plattsburgh, Utica and Manhattanville on the road

8) Manahttanville-seem to have recruited a whole new team; two DI transfers and two Canadian AA college transfers

9) St. Thomas

10) Adrian
