Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2025-2026

Survive and advance. That's what happened tonight and just barely.

Credit due to PSU and that crowd and energy in the building. That was as tough a road environment as could exist in women's hockey.

But... the elephant in the room...

This team is not really clicking on all cylinders and haven't been since the players returned from the Olympics.

I don't buy that some of them don't care after winning the gold, but I'm not sure what the issue is. Hope they can find 3 (or) more periods of their game to close out the season.

The upside of this game is it was a tougher test than tOSU had and PSU basically played the way tOSU does - physical and taking away time and space. Of course tOSU is much better at it but still, glad we were pushed in that way tonight.

Clean up the penalties and play a full 60 and let the chips fall.

I wouldn't say that the Olympians don't care. I will say they don't show a burning desire to win. If their talent doesn't care the day, it's a coin toss that will decide whether they'll win or lose.

TWSNBN has its share of Olympians and they have shown spark throughout the Olympic period and since then. Unless a bright light comes on between now and Sunday. I don't like Wisconsin's chances.

It's kind of funny, but I remember not liking Mark Johnson in college when he played for Wisconsin, because when they would come to Duluth he'd usually be a pain in the arse to UMD. But I do respect him as a coach, and always have.
I remember not liking him in high-school. Didn't take long to overcome that after.

I was happy to see PSU go down via penalty. I don’t know if they always play this way, but it sure looked to me their strategy at the beginning of the game was to play as physical as possible. Make sure you “finish your checks”. When none of these hits were called early Wisconsin unfortunately went into retaliatory mode.

That being said, Penn State played a very good game.

I think some are being overly critical with the team. A couple of points:
  • Olympians scored all 4 goals last night. Ava after letting in soft goals on the 1st 2 shots was phenomenal the rest of the game. So the Olympians certainly are performing. Adele has been especially good since coming back
  • KK might be the 1 Olympian that could say hasn't quite been the same. Teams have been able to get under her skin with some of the cheap shots on her. She has had the weight of the world on her shoulders through the Olympic period being the player considered to be the best in the world and having huge expectations on her. I could see where she is battling both a bit of mental and physical fatigue.
  • Wisconsin had 5 Olympians, 4 in the US team. OSU had 5 also, but only 1 on the US team. The US Olympians had a much longer string of intense games than players from other countries, so I can see the Badger Olympians being a little fatigued
  • I don't think the team "is not really clicking on all cylinders and haven't been since the players returned." They thoroughly beat Minnesota State in the WCHA semis and absolutely hammered Quinnipiac in the NCAA quarterfinals. They lead OSU with 5 minutes left in the WCHA championship. They outshot PSU last night 35-25. PSU was playing the biggest game of program history with a talented group of seniors playing in front of the biggest home crowd ever.
So in summary, I don't think we need to be so down on this team and think we are underdogs on Sunday. Clean up the penalties and I like our chances. After all we are defending champs and have beaten OSU 3 out of 5 times this year. Lots of negativity on this board for a team with 34 wins playing for yet again another natty.

Was it really that hard to make that prediction?
Not at all, but up to that point the both of them had maybe 2 grade A looks total that never ended up with a shot on goal and that was disappointing.

As others have stated, UW is not the favorite tomorrow. Poise on the breakout is not really there at times, they are not winning the faceoff war (actually, Eden was 1/7, Sappy, Picard and Hall were all over 50%, other fill ins were 0/4) and they are taking stupid penalties. I don't think there is more to it than that.

I'm not "down on the team" but I do think tOSU is playing better right now and therefore should be considered the favorites.

The team doesn't look the same as they did when they went into Columbus and swept the Buckeyes. I don't believe I've said anywhere that it was because of the Olympians but rather that the team doesn't look the same since they returned. I know that others have said that about the Olympians though.

I agree though that KK hasn't seemed the same. Was noticeable in the two games I attended (BSU 1 & Quinn) in that she wasn't particularly noticeable like she usually is.

Agreed on Adela - she was fantastic before the Olympics but she leveled up in her confidence because of that experience. She's been my favorite player to watch all year.

Yes... stay out of the box and play our game and I like our chances.

Well, I like them better than if we succumb to retaliating to tOSU's physical play. Yes, UW led that game late but the Buckeyes had the better of the play through most of that game. Same thing with the Natty game last year. They are a tough matchup for UW and we need to be at our absolute best tomorrow to win.

Like I said, I hope they find their game - the team game they had in January - one more time this season.

I like how Laila skated over to retrieve Simms' 100th goal puck before joining the pile-on celebration

It's also Harvey's 200th point puck.

Do they saw it in half across, or 'lengthwise' from the side?

Again, Wisconsin went way beyond retaliatory mode. And one can hardly claim with a straight face that the Badgers weren't playing just as physical from the opening face-off. They committed four clear major penalties, picking up a total of two minutes for them. Šapovalivová's kick on Desa was one of the dirtier plays I've ever seen.

It was the dirtiest game I've ever seen Wisconsin play.
