McNaughton was doing some out of character things yesterday. During warm-ups when they're doing the continuous loop shooting, usually the goalies try to stop just about every shooter. She was skipping every two three shooters and trying to focus on just one. When the game started she was being very vocal and which is very different than her usual self and Badger goalies in general. Once a couple goals went in, she was back to being quiet. I hope this isn't USA Hockey screwing her up like they are doing Edwards.
I think you owe her the benefit of the doubt on a few things here!
1. McNaughton has been stellar against OSU, UMD, and St Thomas. She's bound to have a little bit of an "off" day every once in a while.
2. When you look at how fast the warm-up shots are in that loop-de-loop shooting, it's pretty much impossible to stop each one, so rather than hurt the confidence she, presumably, wanted to dial in on just one out of every couple. You tend to see this in the NHL, too- albeit they often shoot much slower than the Badgers do since their warm-ups are longer.
3. You have to give a bit of credit to Bemidji, too. Just because they are the last team in the conference doesn't mean they aren't skilled players. Sure, the first one was a bit of a squeaker, but a breakaway and a power-play goal where the BSU player was pushed on top of her by Venusio don't really seem "out of character". Anyone can score on any given day, given the golden opportunities the team tends to give up often.
4. I have actually noticed her communicating more often than past Badger goalies in every game- to the point where you can even hear her on the broadcast. That's not always a bad thing. It's helpful to have clear communication in a fast game like hockey.
Anyway, definitely not her best game, but I don't think she was as bad as you made her sound. She looked great on Sunday, and we don't need her best hockey now- we need it in March.
