Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

Agape Ranch is a full go, they broke ground today. And MJ is still the coach. We dodged the bullet.
How do we know the latter two statements are true? How far into the offseason is it appropriate to make a retirement announcement, especially if the likely successor is in-house?

Based on nothing more than 'my gut', my guess is that MJ would tell the players first, and do so as soon as practicable as possible, meaning shortly after the end of the season.

This year, the Monday after the championship game was the beginning of spring break week for UW students. So while some probably stayed in town (and did so, based on TikTok video of them celebrating with "Natty" the trophy around town), others might have taken off for a well-deserved couple days of normal spring break, etc., So any sort of individual 'exit interviews' that the coaches would have held or full 'team meeting' would have had to wait until the week after - March 31 to April 4. Any delay longer than that, and you have a half-dozen of the team heading out to the World Championships.

So, if an announcement was coming, my guess is that it would have come that week. No such announcement came, so - fingers crossed, knock on wood - I think we're OK for at least one more year.

In the sort-of "no news is good news" category, "nothing unusual is good news" here: MJ's contract was extended by one year, to now run through the 2029-30 season.

It is standard procedure for UW coaches to have five-year contracts, and have those contracts extended once a year to stay at a five-year length. Had the "winter" contract been extended and MJ's NOT have been included would have been unusual.

Sounds like there was a transfer portal player on an official visit yesterday. Should be news coming shortly
If both Eden and Picard are coming back, aren't we already at a roster of 26? Isn't that the limit set by the House v NCAA settlement (assuming it becomes final by September)?

--------------

(Adding that the judge recently expressed "concern" about current scholarship players possibly being squeezed out by new roster limits, expressing a 'desire' that some sort of transition period during which some current scholarship players not count against the roster limit. But that seems more intended for a sport/team when the roster limit is smaller that a current scholarship limit. That's not the case for ice hockey.)

Yeah from what's been said in the men's threads, 26 is the limit. They don't need Olympic insurance anymore either. Perhaps someone is not healthy. Vassuer got healthy, played a bit, the did not dress after that.

Is it possible that Bella Vasseur won't be back? I gather that she has sustained more than one injury during the past two years. I hope this isn't true because I would love to see her fit into the lineup. Remember when Rachel Jones was one of the players who typically sat out regularly during her early years? Then in her senior year, she blossomed. I'd like to see something similar for Bella, if her health permits.

Remember that Vasseur is at least listed as being from Oregon, WI. (confusing about where she played high school, and whether had moved to Oregon 'recently', etc.) So it might be a reasonable assumption that she's been a walk-on 'local', and the switchover from scholarship limits to roster limits means they can get her some scholarship money? That might be enough to keep her happy.

This is a wonderful read, and answers your questions.

Vasseur showed some athleticsm in the few shifts I saw her play. Something to work with if she can stay healthy and earn more ice time. As some people say, availability is the best ability.

Adela had 3 points as one of the youngest players on Czechia and was voted one of the 3 best players on her team per TDM. I'm getting as excited for her arrival as I was for OB and Webster.

Saw a post on the Tweeder Picard is coming back to finish her Masters.
Picard's GF is a former Badgers BB player who as far as I know is working in Madison. Personal reasons as well as athletic and academic ones for sticking around.

Eden has been dropping un-subtle hints that she intends to be here for another year(s).

Let's see how the tea leaves read. Eden could probably can get a PhD lol or a double masters.

Eden and Picard, if they wanted to transfer, would be able to as grad transfers. So 'the portal closing' in another week doesn't really mean anything. The real deadline for Eden (and Abbey Murphy) is May 8, the deadline for players to declare for the PWHL draft.
