Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2024-2025

The team is at the Brewers-Reds game in Milwaukee tonight, and Woz got to throw out the first pitch.

So why Woz? Well, Simms and Laila and Eden and Harvey and McNaughton (I think?) aren't there because of the upcoming world championships.

But O'B is there. But - the point of this post - her right hand/arm is in a sling! A post-season surgery? A new injury? Anybody know anything?

No word on whether they get to run the sausage race.

(When the 2021 championship volleyball team was at the game, five of them got to be in the sausage race. And instead of trying to win the race, Liz Gregorski decided to enjoy the moment, and 'cadillaced' her way around so slowly, the Miller Park people had to hurry her up to get her off the field, to get ready for the next inning. LOL)

Nela L is having herself a great 2025 National tourney for the BK Selects.....8 goals in 5 games against the best of the best of her age group. I think she'll do ok at UW. Losing Simms and bringing her in will probably be a wash.

She had another good day (2 goals, not sure about assists) in the championship game, which BK won 9-0.
[That's a link to the article about the game.]

Can't wait to see her on the ice - sounds like a generational talent,,,,,,,,,
Personally, I feel like that term is way over-used. Obviously I hope it applies to her in the truest sense. I think the only Badger that I have seen in person who was/is a generational talent is Harvey. She does things that no one else does and she did those things as Fr. Possibly Knight but my getting deep into this program was just starting as she was finishing.

I am particularly excited to see Finley McCarthy in action. I feel she's been kind of forgotten since she was too old for the last U18s, but she was a force at the previous two and I could easily see her pushing for an early top six spot.
It was interesting that Scannell was the most visible Fr. F, sometimes getting dropped into the top 3 lines when MJ flipped the Mad Scientist lines switch. Scannell was 13/5, Halverson was 4/8 and McCarthy was 6/5. I hope one ( or more) of them can become as distributor and replace some of the 62 a OB doled out. FYI OB only had 10 pts in 21 games as a Fr, that's crazy. 55 as a So, 48 as a Jr 73 as a Sr and 88 as a Gr. If one of this year's Fr and go for 45-50 next season that will be a really good thing. If they play with Simms or Edwards, it's going to happen.

Who plays center on the first line is to me a big question. All four of the centers has good to great faceoff win percents; O'B and Picard had the best win percents, Cassie Hall took the second most faceoffs (behind O'B, of course). So, Hall? Scannell? One of the incoming freshmen?

(This is all 2025-26 talk, and that means we're transitioning from 'champions' to 'defending champions'. I don't want to do that yet! LOL)

We're the champs until the puck drop next season, then we're the defending champs. Ride the juice from snatching victory from the jaws of TWSNBN all spring and summer. It's probably the most epic win in the history of the women's program, except maybe title 1 though I was not a witness to it, but getting that first one got the puck sliding.

I do love pondering the future as well, so I'll keep playing both sides. If Eden and Picard don't return, they will only have 5 forwards who played a regular shift on the roster, 3 F who played in 2/3 of the games and minimal high leverage action, and 5 F who played zero or practically zero games last year (though Zillich is a sr and has experience from her previous stop). That seems pretty scary.

With the D, they are stacked. Gorbotenko or Jones will probably get the 6th D spot, but they can run 6 D without worry. I'm sure either will be typical UW plug and play Fr. D.

Eden and Picard are returning

Eden and Picard are returning
Great news, if true.

(Eden going for championship #4; she'd be the first one to ever do that.)

It would also - if I'm counting correctly - put them at the 'new' roster limit of 26. That's more than they've normally carried. I hope that doesn't prompt anyone at 'the end of the bench' to head for the portal...

Channeling my inner Elaine Bennis......"GET OUT!" Eden is the the stick that stirs the pot. Simms centering Eden and Edwards would be interesting. Picard a solid 2 way player. I think her ceiling is a 3rd line center, and that's ok.

Edwards Scannell Simms
Eden Hall KG
Enright Picard Sapovalivova
Halverson Pieckenhagen McCarthy
NG Zilich Vasseur

I'm very curious where NG Pieckenhagen Sapovalivova fit into all of this. I'm thinking they aren't 4 liners but neither are Halverson and McCarthy.

Thanks Mark.

I had heard that if we won the national championship, Eden was leaning toward coming back to try for a fourth. (I would have thought the opposite: if we had lost, she would have come back to try for one more.) I'm glad what I heard was correct! And Picard is an excellent "keep," too! I believe we had 26 on the roster in 2018-19. And we've had 24 a few times. I think it's better to have more than one player not dressed for each game. Otherwise, the solo not-suited player ends up feeling pretty isolated.

Eden and Picard are returning
Without saying it outright, Eden has given strong public indications that she intends to return. Picard has personal reasons for staying in Madison and is also considering medical school. No one would fault her for spending another fun year playing hockey before starting that grind.
