Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

Gervais can play out her eligibility as long as she is in school at UW Madison. So, she can play while she's in grad school until she finishes her degree(s) or her eligibility runs out. I bet the School ofgets Education sure appreciates all our grad students who need to find grad programs. Jane will be enrolled in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. For others, "Sports Leadership" is the port in the storm. Peter Miller, former chair of the Athletic Board, is instrumental in both programs, from what I can tell. The School of Ed is well-respected in the field, so the students are not wasting their time.

So she gets the bachelor in 3 years, masters in 4 years, then in yr 5 stays enrolled and works on the PhD? When I went to college, a masters took 2 years to attain and a PhD another 2 years, in rough terms anyway. Maybe I need to get my masters in Sports Leadership.

Different programs take differing amounts of time to complete: two semesters, three, four.

And - I looked this up to be sure - "grad school" doesn't have to mean a masters.

Bylaw 14.6 says she must be "enrolled in a graduate or professional school ... [or] seeking a second baccalaureate or equivalent degree ... or a student-athlete who has graduated and is continuing as a full-time student ... while taking course work that would lead to the equivalent of another major or degree as defined and documented by the institution, may participate in intercollegiate athletics...". (The wording for 'grad at the same school' vs 'grad transfer' is slightly different, but to the same effect.)

So any sort of certificate program or 'second major' coursework would be good enough to maintain eligibility.

(I think I have mentioned in the past when this topic came up - maybe it was at the volleyball site - that I did pretty much this exact thing. Back in the dark ages, the last class I took to complete my math major was a computer programming class; prior to the invention of the PC, some of it done on punch cards, 'batch runs', etc. I went to the academic advisors and said I wanted to take some more computer classes, and did that have to be a masters, or a second bachelors, etc? They said no, just work towards a second major, still under the already completed bachelor's degree. So I did just that. Most people who get a 'double major' do them at the same time, I did them sequentially, one after the other. I had athletic eligibility remaining, too; I just didn't have the talent to get on a team!)

Thinking about Patricio's post in the other thread about going undefeated.....Last year was quite the humble pie season with that opening loss to PSU who I called a cupcake and there was the losing streak. I don't think I'll ever entertain that thought until they can get to January undefeated, then maybe, but UM and OSU are SO friggin' good that it's just not possible to run the table. Plus UMD is not an easy out and St. Cloud is coming. The WCHA is a way tougher conference now than when that one team ran the table all those years ago. I do expect them to be a top 4 team in the ncaa's all year. Obviously they will start at #1, which can be lame, but it's tradition, right?

That is a difficult post to follow. All of us here, I'm sure, pass on our condolences to the family. Sadly, this is something many of us are facing, as older relations and acquaintances move to the other side.
On a lighter note, I see that there is a cheese rolling tournament happening in Gloucester, England.
Wisconsin is home of the best cheese in the world. I was born in Wisconsin, and remember my first taste of cheese, Swiss, cut from a wheel at the BVass Lake Cheese Factory.

I was just reminiscing to myself how much I enjoyed the the U18 World Jr tourney last year. I feel very honored that Frosty chose to sit by me for 2 periods that one game. What a fun experience overall.

In the absence of women’s hockey Perhaps you would enjoy the final series of the NHL playoffs? You could cheer for a Kessel! I hope Phil unexpectedly gets off the scratched list just like Amanda did, and then helps Vegas to a cup.

Never rooting for a Kessel. I'm still very bummed the Stars are out.

Since no one took a 'bite' on my Gloucester cheese roll post, I will note that the UpNorthNews, Wisconsin version, has been touting a state wide cheese tour. Today's issue talks about the best string cheese in the world. Come on cheeseheads, let's hear some excitement!

For as long as I can remember (and I'm 66 years old) our family's pizza restaurants have used Lone Elm mozzerella. They're located in Van Dyne/Friendship, north of Fond du Lac. But as far as I know (I'm not involved in running the restaurants), they are a bulk/wholesale provider. I don't know if they even have any sort of outlet store, etc, in Van Dyne. But it is outstanding mozzerella.

I just drove the entire length of Wisconsin from north to south (twice in a week) and I've still never tried cheese curds. I'm told that's a cardinal sin, so I'm admitting it in a very hushed tone.

I'm not a fan of them. Curds are just a step in the process on the way to becoming cheddar. Well, I prefer a good cheddar, so I'll wait til It's ready.

(Lone Elm has excellent cheddar, too. But again, bulk supplier.)

As we all know, June is Dairy Month. (If you grew up in Wisconsin, you've been hearing that your whole life.)

But I didn't know until the TV today told me just now that June 4th in National Cheese Day. It seemed a nice coincidence for Steamboat's prompting.

So happy Cheese Day; everybody go get some curds, or string cheese, or a pizza, or...

I saw in the news yesterday that the men's basketball team announced the annual game vs Marquette will be at the Kohl Center Saturday Dec 2nd.

So, my 'favorite' weekend is setting up to full capacity, after a year of sanity: Basketball at the Kohl Center sometime Saturday, women's hockey hosting Duluth Friday-Saturday-Sunday, volleyball hosting first weekend of the NCAA volleyball tournament (maybe Thursday-Friday but more likely) Friday-Saturday, and the Big Ten football championship game televised Saturday night. Men's hockey and women basketball still unknowns.
