This will outdate both of you, but I'd say the class of 84-85.

those 2 classes were just before my time in terms of going to games. my dad got season tickets the year Mike Richter got to Madison, so 86?. I remember Granato, Tuttle, Ranheim, Gary "Hi Gary" Bunz (for his weekend penalty box shifts), Dean Anderson.

man we've had some great teams in madison. I keep trying to get my fellow Hawks fans to start following suit and watching UW hockey

Actually they did make the NCAAs in 1988, they just didn't make it the the Frozen Four.

I remember (out of nostalgia I suppose) the 2 big classes that IMO should have won *at least* one NCAA title at UW (considering their "on paper" talent, speed and point production) the majority of whom all stayed 4 years at UW (in fact I think all these guys were 4-year players including Zent and Rafalski)

When Sauer retired he said in an interview that the 90' and 91' were the best two classes he ever recruited.(or should I say Mike Kemp recruited). He basically said it was quite a coup to get all these players because they were all from different parts of the country and every national power was on them. He stated that those teams had more individual talent than any championship team he's ever had.

I was only referring to the 84-85 team with all of those guys. Still amazing that the class of 84-85 only went to that one tournament. Mellanby only stuck around for 2 years I believe.

and I believe Jeff all the way on that. Even though he couldn't land the big fish in the last 5-6 years he still could identify the talent (pettinger and numerous others who he whiffed on).

The sad part is they were the two most gifted (individually) classes of the Sauer era as he said, but... sometimes they came out and just barnstormed teams and sometimes they played like there should have been 5 pucks out there, selfish and out-of-control. that's why they averaged around 12-14 losses a season. they won despite themselves sometimes and lost when they had no business losing (see Boston U 4-1, ugh).

it's too bad because getting 1 class like that is tough enough but back to back is unbelievable. were it to happen today it would be a coup that would be discussed for years amongst us fans.

Sauer gets a lot of crap for his recruiting at the end of his tenure but people forget that the seniors on the 2006 title team were his recruits. Burish, Gilbert, MacMurchy, Licari, etc..

true that was his class but w/out Eaves that class doesn't win the title, IMO.

having said that though, I suppose one could argue that Sauer would have needed 3 more years to find out what he could have done with them. those kids DID have a ton of character and heart and those are the kinds of kids you'd need in a Sauer-type team to reel in the loose cannon's as we know JS liked to allow the team to police themselves sotospeak.

Not totally involved with UW recruiting but as I see Ohio State has 15 recruits for next year and only 10 Sr. Leaving, hard to see any Buckeyes leaving early. Maybe Osiecki started to over recruit at OSU after leaving UW.

This happens when new coaches take over. I would expect there are some under classmen who won't be back on the team next season. Blais just did the same thing with Nebraska-Omaha.

UW Recruiting: Davison prepares for playoffs

The Wisconsin high school hockey playoffs officially kicked off on Tuesday but for most of the top seeds, Thursday is opening night. That includes Wisconsin defense recruit Tim Davison, who's Notre Dame Academy Tritons open up regional play at home against the Oshkosh Ice Hawks at Cornerstone Arena.

I had an opportunity to talk with Davison, who is a projected 2012 or 2013 recruit about the playoffs tonight.

Notre Dame Academy, winners of their last eight games including three against top 10 teams are just coming into their own. "We had some ups and downs in the middle of our season, and as of late we have been playing well."

Davison was a part of the Tritons squad who made it to the State tournament last season and he gave us little insight on what his team needs to do to make a return trip to the coliseum. "The only way we will be able to make it to Madison this year is if our entire team buys into what our coaches have been teaching us all season. It's a team effort."

Davison, who tied for the team lead in scoring in the regular season with 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 points in 23 games wasn't shy about singling out the favorites this season. "Eau Claire Memorial is the team to beat."

Memorial got the best of Notre Dame Academy 3-2 about a month ago at the Resch center but Davison notes things could change in the playoffs. "If we are fortunate enough to make it to state, I believe anything could happen there."

Notre Dame Academy and Eau Claire Memorial are on opposite sides of the bracket and would only meet should the two teams reach the State Championship game. A rematch between the two would certainly be must see TV.

who is springfield?

any read on Woods, Strange and Paape as in does their PPG avg mean much in terms of how to evaluate their potential in madison?

how does Zulinick compare to Lee, Turris, or Zengerle in the BCHL, thoughts?

Springfield is a team in the EJHL where McGuire was sent to rehab after his concussion.

Zulinick compares more to Turris than Lee or Zengerle.

IIRC, he's the kid that was being compared to Burish in terms of leadership skills about 2 years ago...

nice work on the blog...any chance UW is after Seth Jones, or the kid from chicago/russia/wherever?

Haven't heard us in on Jones but that doesn't mean anything. So far I've just heard DU and UND though. The Chicago/Russia/Wherever kid is Alex Galchenyuk and he's playing in the OHL so that's out.
