Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

So...recruiting has been a little bit busy this week. Parcells joins Hurley, Frederic, and Mersch.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

I would agree. Redshirting unrelated to medical circumstances is extremely uncommon in today's college hockey world. I think you might have to go back to the mid-90's when UW last redshirted a scholarship player that wasn't hurt.

The guys I mentioned (Davison and McGuire) did not play in a game last year. If you are one of those guys and the staff is on board, why wouldn't you redshirt?

The more I look at Andy's defensive recruiting chart the more I think it's possible Hurley's going to be the 8th defenseman next year, and possibly play up front if needed next year as well. If they bring in another defenseman for next year there will be 9 defensemen for at least 2015-2016 and 2016-2017, assuming everything lines up as Andy has laid out. Unless they're absolute wizards with scholarship money, that's pretty tough to do, and puts too many guys in the stands every game night. I'm curious to hear what others think about this possibility (unless you disagree with me ;)).

You have to keep in mind Wittchow is a flight risk after next season. He's in a Justin Schultz 4-year out from the draft situation so Florida will be putting the screws to him to get him under contract. I'm sure they've probably offered him a deal right now in fact for this year. While I think he'll be back for next season, it wouldn't be shocking at all if he wasn't back for his senior season.

For anyone who missed it over the weekend, four new commits for the Badgers.

That and who knows how long Dougherty will be around (although that's a more long-term concern).

Wittchow and Schulze are going to have to play HUGE minutes next season unless one or more of the freshman step in and are ready to go, which defensemen rarely are. I think the incoming freshmen are going to be a great group, but it is going to be a rough season.

Jack Dougherty is ready to step in and play big minutes right out of the gates. I talked with a few NHL scouts in recent weeks who said they would take him late first round (NHL Draft) if they had a chance. Also talked to some college coaches who agreed he's going to be a stud right from the drop of the puck.

I also don't think people realize what Ford can do. That kid plays nasty. Going to be a fan favorite right away.

Schulze - Dougherty
Ford - Wittchow
Davison - Drake
(freshman) - Linhart

That's probably how I would start things for now. I'll be interested to see what they do with only two right handers back there right now. Wittchow can play the right side if he has to, so can Drake for that matter. Linhart is going to be really good at this level some day, I'm just not sure it's going to be next fall. He's the odd man out for me right now.

Definitely going be some growing pains, especially early on. Good group to grow from though.

That is encouraging. Hopefully Dougherty is like Ryan McDonagh. He adapted to NCAA Hockey very quickly compared to his highly touted classmates in Smith and Goloubef. The Badgers NEED that next season. And Keegan Ford doesn't need to score goals, if he steps in and plays solid D every shift that will be a great freshman year. I recall that he is built like a brick **** house, correct? Smaller, but a beast?

That's a pretty good way of putting it. He's only 5'8 but he's 180 pounds and has a very thick lower half. If you see him in street clothes you can tell how solid he's built.

He's one of the more intelligent players Wisconsin has brought in on the back end in recent years in terms of being able to read the play and using his natural ability to stop the rush. I've seen him use the hip check effectively even though he was one of the smallest players on the ice. He's not afraid to fight, not afraid to step up and lay kids out who are significantly bigger than he is. There's no fear factor in Keegan Ford.

If this is the case, he may supplant Nick Licari as my all time favorite to watch Badger. But that will take some doing. I already like watching Jedd Soleway and his physical nature, so another kid to follow will make next year's rebuilding fun.

I have seen Ford play 15+ times over the last couple years. I have heard the term Mighty Mouse used in reference to him, and I think it fits. Plays much much bigger than his size and has a Sean Avery personality on the ice. He is gritty, nasty, chirps, and not afraid of anything. He is the kind of kid you love having on your team but hate playing against.

my hope is to see more of the USHL and Badger recruits with the Capitals coming to town this fall. I have seen a couple rough rider games as my sister lives in Cedar Rapids, and it is an enjoyable level of play to watch.

Hopefully not too much like Sean Avery. That guy gave away power plays like it was Christmas.

If he wants to stay in the lineup that won't be an issue. Eaves would never stand for that type of undisciplined play.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXX: 1 All American at a Time

In the Wausau Daily Herald, Adam Parsells indicates he's hoping to play for the Gamblers next season and could land at UW for 2015-2016 or later depending on his development. I would think 2016-2017 is likely, as Andy has said, given that he's been described as "raw".

I talked to Parsells Saturday for my story, Wisconsin has not told him any time table. He won't be in Madison before 2016, I'll tell you that much.
