Excellent

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

While I was a little less nervous then some, I must confess I was really worried. Hughes and Rockwood are about as good a combo as the staff could have landed given the situation. I'm greedy and still would love to find a way to land MacTavish...almost 20 year old with a dad that can pay most of the tuition bill. Otherwise we are at the point of seeing what 2 partial scholarship role players we fill out the lineup with and cross our fingers on Kerdelies and LaBate returning for the fall.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

It is big news for the Badgers and if we were to assume at this point there were no early departures, next year's team will look pretty good.

Plus the Canadian Club back in Madtown. The Best in the House!

Excellent. Next year will still be tough, though.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Every year is tough, just the way things are. Hopefully, OSU, PSU, and MSU can step it up and make things even tougher.

But, you know, extra super duper tough, partly depending on early departures.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Should be noted that it appears Hughes arrival is open ended as to whether he'll come in next year or the year following. Presumably depending on early departures.

Even without early departures, shouldn't he come in next year?

This is according to Baggot. He could but keep in mind he's not 18 until next October.

The interesting thing to me then is that presumably he is offered Kerdiles or Labates scholarship. Where's markwojo? I can't keep track of all our speculations about scholarships. Would we be guessing that we still have some $$ in our pocket?

Maybe Rockwood isn't player X and we're still after someone else?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Are there anymore Canadians they can pluck out? Seems to me there are a few in the AJHL and BCHL but I'm no expert.

I spoke with Hughes tonight. He said it will be a mutual decision between the Wisconsin coaching staff and him after the season. He's undecided whether he wants to go to school next season yet or not, and didn't want to make that decision before committing to a school. He basically wanted to get the school choice out of the way first, and then decide whether or not he needs another year of junior later in the season.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

This open ended thing seems to leave at least a portion of the decision up to Hughes. I do like the potential flexibility to have Hughes in your back pocket in case LaBate or Kerdelies leave in the Spring/Summer and be able to spend the scholarship money on someone(s) else in the interum. Yes there are other kids out there that can help in the BCHL/AJHL....MacTavish sure looks like he fills that description.

Currently we have 3 Western Canadians on the team. 10 'sconnies. Obviously times have changed and Wisconsin youth hockey improved in the past, but where are the Ontarians and Québécois?

True, the ol' Badger Bob pipeline into eastern Canada has sadly withered away over time. I would assume it is Edmontonion and 1990 WCHA Player of the Year, Gary Shuchuck that has been the key to extending our reach into western Canada. Personally, I'm pretty pleased with that.

Remember when we first hired Eaves and we were all excited about him bringing along his strong connection to the NTDP? Obviously we are still getting some kids, but probably not the way we were thinking it would work out back then.Recruiting just keeps getting tougher for everyone.

Well, there's the fact that it's tougher, but I also had to figure his NTDP influence would wane over time. It starts becoming less relevant to a guy that Eaves headed the NTDP program in the early 2000s when it's 2014 than it was in 2005.
