Rockwood would be a great pickup for Wisconsin. I am amazed for the fact he is still uncomitted at this point.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I apologize for anyone who sees this thread bump and gets excited, just dropping a note that Dylan Pavelek (NTDP U18's) committed to Michigan State today. He was one of the 12 I had listed as potential options.

I always check a site called "Bucky's 5th Quarter" before coming here because I'm guessing any recruit signing info will be there first. ;)

Wow, that is a really nice site. I had never seen it before. One writer in particular (I think his name is Chuck Johnson or Andy Schwartz or something like that) is really good!

We love you Chandy Schwohnson!

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Minnesota transfer Christian Horn committed to St. Lawrence tonight.

**** I really liked his game...seeing all of these guys (sheehy and others) go off the board is getting scary. did the UW coaching staff put all of their eggs into 2 baskets (Hughes and Rockwood)? If Hughes commits elsewhere this team is going to be pretty well screwed for years because bringing in 4-5 grinders is going to be 4-5 roster spots they cannot get back for 4 years w/out possibly cutting playing time in the future if they can right the ship w/recruiting forwards. If both Hughes and Rockwood commit that still would leave 2-4 openings with no-one exciting to fill those spots

I'm really not liking where this is heading

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Horn is a decent player but that's hardly something to get worked up over.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Every update to this thread that doesn't involve a verbal for the badgers drives me nuts.

If we lose out on more options, we're going to have to find a way to pass Reinprecht off as a 20 year old Canadian.

You realize 4-5 grinders don't get full scholarships...like none of them...hedoublell...maybe not even all of them combined get one of the 18?

If we can land Rockwood and Hughes...it will have been as good a recruiting job as could have been possible. You can't realistically expect any college coach to be able to recruit to the 4 of the 2-4...cause there just aren't that many guys talented enough that you can move forward a year that are willing to hide in your back pocket if the spots do not come open if guys do not jump early.

Sure, but what if we don't land both...

yeah, I get that, I'm just saying if they've put everything on Hughes and Rockwood and 1 or both don't commit you have at least 4 grinders coming in and possibly 6 if #16 and #17 leave early. It's a terrible position to be in and I'm belaboring the point here but being in this position was something that Eaves was supposed to have dealt with long ago, meaning evening out the classes.

Let's let the process play out. The generalizations about "grinders" is a complete fallacy. Acting as if they are the only two players with the ability to play a skill game left on the board just isn't true.

Obviously there are roles to replace in this class and I'm sure that's going to be taken into consideration. Out of the four spots that are (for sure) left, probably two are going to be lower level scholarship guys who can play a two-way game, bring energy and kill penalties. Obviously they can't take 6 play-making centers or 6 power wingers.

We've gone over multiple times how much scholarship money is already tied up in current players committed for this class. If they truly believe Rockwood/Hughes are the two best players available and they have only a handful of dollars left, you can't give away their offers if you believe you have a good shot to land them.

There are people (like, the UW coaching staff, for example) who have actually scouted these players and have years of experience doing this type of thing, and then there are the rest of us. I'll take the experience/people who have actually seen everyone play at this stage.

It's just has to play out before we consider getting a rope and finding a tall tree or finding a bridge. The thing that confuses me is how did this situation get to this point where there are so many holes and not enough bodies lined up yet? What is the general cut off date where you should have most of the ducks in a row? The early signing period?

I wish the Gophs had a thread like this for recruiting, I end up reading this pretty often just because it's so interesting to see a little of how the recruiting stuff works.

Do you have an updated list of that 12 or so still available players, where they went, and who is still available?

I understand the $ situation, however that doesn't alleviate the concern that something's gone wrong with how they approached 2014-15.

The generalization about grinders is not fallacy, there are 2-3 on the team now that I feel were brought on in a sort of panic mode when players didn't commit in years past. And I'm speaking mainly of WI born players. I've watched your list closely, we've seen talent commit elsewhere and each time it happens the talent on uncomitted list dwindles and I'll note you've alluded to there not being much talent out there remaining (outside of Hughes/Rockwood) as well.

I know you don't like people questioning the coaching staff but we're not stupid, those of us who've seen decades of UW hockey can see this situation is unusual at best...

what's more, if you're Eaves how do you convince #16 or #17 to stay 1 more season if the forwards coming in don't appear as if they'll have an impact or more specifically an immediate impact? That's an extremely tough sell.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Also Andy / Chuck, I put this on Eaves who replaced coaching staff with two guys that had zero, zip, nada college coaching / recruiting experience. Shuchuk was running a couple of ice rinks in Madison and Walsh was working with USA youth teams on seminars. I questioned these hires just solely based on lack of experience of recruiting and coaching at this level.

To be fair, I am not in the game like you and others, but just what I heard from guys that are in the know, they questioned these hires, especially Shuchuk.

As I explained in one article along the way things looked a lot better at one point in time. People seem to forget Grant Besse and Jedd Soleway both committed for 2015 originally. Besse was brought in early because of how well he kept playing and the fact they felt he could make an immediate impact, and Soleway replaced the surprising departure of Brendan Woods. And obviously the Christian Dvorak situation. So, those things have certainly added to it.
