That's just what I mean. Easy for everyone to say go out and get a bunch of high skill smaller guys because they'll stick 4 years and yadda, yadda, yadda... But the risk is a lot more with a smaller kid generally. You figure you get a 6'2" kid that can skate and you'll find something to do with him. Anyway, when I see a smaller guy that's really good I'm always curious about how they were recruited and developed. Thanks for the input.

I've seen smaller guys play with more energy in grinder roles than some of their bigger counterparts. I'd say it is a case by case basis and depends a lot on what you gave out for a scholarship in each situation. Not sure I buy your logic on what is a lesser risk. It's not quite that easy.

Edit: Sounds like Eagan's Zach Glienke might (be thinking about leaving) Maine. He's a true freshman but hasn't played in any games. USHL's Sioux City picked up his rights.

Talent evaluation isn't the problem. Eaves has whiffed on a few talented scorers (Ryan Walters and others) along the way and also made what I thought was a terrible decision after 06 to move away from recruiting the 1 or 2 and done type guys, but it looks like he's re-adjusted again in the past 1-2 years regarding forwards.

Aren't most of the waterbugs on BC from the East coast? UW hasn't had much of a presence that way outside of landing Zengerle. I'd guess Eaves and York are recruiting different players about 80-90% of the time.

Reading Chuck's recruiting update...so there's an Andringa, Bunz and another Ford? All sons of former Badgers??? I'm assuming Chevy Ford is Pat's kid? Howie always called Pat "Chevy"

Ding, ding and ding. Former Badger Kurt Semandel's kid (Alec) is also a premiere player as a 10th grader with the Chicago Mission U16 team. Bunz and Semandel are Wisconsin quality. Andringa and Ford should be good high school players but I'm not sure they will be UW type guys.

Holy Smokes! So you're sayin' that if Eaves wasn't just running around with a butcher scale and tape measure all this time he coulda' recruited as many first team All Americans as tDon?

Real nice. You know maybe if you guys would have shared this kinda info with us 40 years ago we coulda' recruited as many All Americans as the Gophers. Man... woulda' been nice to get a couple of decent players in here.

NHL Central Scouting updated its players to watch list today. "A" players = potential first rounders. "B" players = Second/Third rounders. "C" players = Third through Sixth rounders.

Wisconsin natives:
Charley Graaskamp "C" (EC Memorial)
Cooper Watson "C" (Appleton)
Alex Falconer "C" (Shattuck)

Also of note, former recruit Christian Dvorak is a "C" rated player. He's currently 11th in scoring (4 goals, 10 points in 19 games) for the London Knights.

Nothing is ever certain obviously, but I'd guess in the next couple weeks we'll see a '14 or two added to the fold.

Also...All 6 early signees (Keegan Ford, Jake Linhart, Jack Dougherty, Ryan Wagner, Gabe Grunwald and Matt Ustaski) have confirmed they have signed national letters of intent. I'm not sure what the delay is on the press release from the University. Ford was the last one I believe and he said he was signing last Friday when his parents came to town. I'd assume we'll see a release in the next couple days.

I continue to be concerned about 2014. I am assuming you can't say names, but how good are these guys they are chasing (ie. how many stars out of 5)?

As a media guy you don't want to out your sources and he's now a USHL scout, so he has to be careful in that regards as well. That being said, once the names come out I think he'll give us his professional opinion, maybe a little less specific being a scout.

Could be that they are waiting on some other LOI to come in.

Or we could chalk it up to usual "The AD doesn't think that highly of the hockey program" complaint.

It's not that simple. Keep in mind the scholarships available don't always equal bodies leaving. With the 9 guys leaving I'd be surprised if they took up more than 6 whole scholarships. Meuer, Hartzog and Little probably aren't on much of a scholarship. Dahl is very likely a partial, Barnes probably too. Guessing fulls on guys like Zengerle, Mersch, Simmi and maybe Faust.

(Guessing on these numbers) -- So you bring in Dougherty=full, Wagner=full, Ford=full, Linhart=full, Ustaski=half?, Grunwald=who knows. I'm guessing right there alone you have probably 5 used up and you still have to bring in four more forwards and possibly Tischke who is probably costly as well.

Obviously this isn't exactly how the scholarship process works, but the point is it's not always eye for an eye when bringing in new guys to replace old guys.

Really hoping Sheehy is one....he seems like the most likely to be able to contribute next year now that he decided to play in Waterloo. Otherwise, maybe you take a flier on bringing in a kid a year earlier then most think/expect....maybe a Cameron Hughes from AJHL, he's off to a decent start with 8 goals and 22 points in 22 games, but he don't turn 18 until next October. Probably some growing pains with a kid like Hughes, but to get him (and the 2nd and third year on campus where he will likely be very good) to come to your school...maybe that's what you do.

Chuck's thoughts on scholarship money available is likely very true. There MIGHT be enough money to make a strong offer on one kid for next year, but not sure there is enough for 2 unless you are positive someone is leaving early (maybe say if you've had a conversation with Kerdilies and he has said he is leaving for sure as an example...I really hope not as we'll desperately need him). Badgers will likely need a couple older kids that are late bloomers/partial scholarship (or more like very little scholarship) types too. I still think they need to find 3-4 forwards for next fall from a numbers standpoint. Gage Hough is a '93 that is 2nd in the USHL in scoring at 9 goals 26 points in 17 games so far. Jetlan Houcher is a '94 doing well the AJHL. Not sure either of the last 2 are on the Badgers radar, but suspect you'll see a couple guys like that (a Matt Ustaski type if you will)....older '93/'94 kids that physically are closer to competing right out of the gate next year that maybe don;t require/expect as much scholarship dollars.

I'm not sure if this is accurate information or not but I recall reading in another thread that if you sign a LOI in the early signing period that you are a scholarship player in your first year. Maybe someone else can clarify this for me.

Anyone signing an LOI gets an athletic scholarship of some sort; partial or full. Doesn't matter if it is in the early or regular signing period. Recruited walk-ons do not sign LOIs as they are not getting any athletic scholarship money. Once a recruited walk-on is at school and plays, the school can give him some scholie money if the coach wants to and he has some available. This usually occurs after the first year. That player does not have to sign any LOI as he is already in school.
