Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Tarek and Novak will torch UW every time we play them.

As far as those MN kids Eaves took over Tarek that Chuckie Cheese is referring to. Have fun playing the trap for 4 years...good luck with that guys. ;)

UW might be pretty good this year, but not a top 5 team. They will have to do something this year though, because 2014 isn't looking too good for you.

The Kessel cupped hand to ear towards Drunkin Sconi fans is the best moment in Kohl Center history.

And pathetically enough, the highlight of that season (and the past 9 years) for Gopher fans.

Revel in it.

He is, and has been.

I remember when he went to a USA Hockey eval. camp a couple of years ago and heard that he was the top rated kid at his position for his birth year.

Maybe someone else can confirm this and I'm not sure if that was just at that camp or if it was nationwide.

Heard it from the gossiping dads. ;)

If it's true that he's playing for Janesville though, I gotta think that's a step back as they're small time. I looked on their website and he's not listed. I thought he was still with the NTDP, but to be honest, his name hasn't come up (before the last 12 hours) in quite a while so I lost track.

I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong) he's playing for Omaha AAA again this season.

He is playing his first USHL game this weekend for Des Moines. Not sure if that means he will be there all year or not.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Maybe it's just the recent memories of guys like Baker or Jordan Schmaltz heading to rivals, but I'm starting to feel like we're losing out on an increasing number of high quality home-grown prospects.

I suppose that's not all that bad if the state is simply producing more high-end talent that they have to go somewhere, but I guess I'd have to see data before I draw any conclusions. Where would be a good place to find a list of NHL draft picks that came from Wisconsin?

It's not draft picks, but here is a list of NHL players.

agreed. I'm getting worried about this for UW. You can't afford to lose the great in-state players, word gets out. It's tough trend to reverse.

re: Gurtholfin's query: If I had a kid who was a d-1 caliber recruit and he had the talent of a Granato, Shuchuk, Heatley, Zent, Earl, etc...I'd honestly tell him "you're your own man. I can tell you my thoughts but ultimately this is your decision. Go with your heart"

also...go where they'll let you fly up and down the ice and showcase your skill!

Losing in state players is just a symptom of Eaves expecting that every WI player wants nothing more than to go to UW. Until Eaves starts treating WI breed players with more respect this trend isn't going to change, particularly with the top players who have other options.

That's too bad. It's a pretty arrogant/aloof attitude by Eaves and the staff to treat home[growns as givens. Hopefully they change their tune and sooner than later.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Do you really think the UW staff doesn't want the best State players at the UW? You have to compare apples to apples with all the players around the country and in Canada. If Eaves just wanted all WI state players he could easily do that but then they would be losing out on other high end kids from outside the state. I would take the two Minnesota recruits we have any day over the State kids that we lost out on. The staff knows what's best for the program.

Lord knows you wouldn't want Schmidt on your squad. :p

Maybe the amount of high end players coming out of Wisco is just much higher than it has ever been. Of course, every in state player is not going to come to UW anymore. I think this is great sign for the amount of talent in the state. Also, do you know personally that he is treating these kids with little respect because they are from Wisconsin? It is a lose/lose situation for Eaves, because if one of these kids from Wisco doesn't pan out...people would say he needs to stop going after only Wisco players and needs to focus on other areas high end kids. Pretty much people will complain no matter what.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

In the last few years the state lost 2 pretty darn good kids to UND and now 2 to MN - You might want to check whats in the cool aid.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Losing a kid that decommited from the program after he put a gun to the coaches head to sign him when he was 15. After that issue there was no way Eaves would look at this kids brother, even though the kid is good. It's called a character problem with the family. It is a lose lose situation for the staff but they have landed some great recruits in the mean time. More to come!
