hmm. I wonder what it is that had/has UW backing away from Sheehy? By all accounts he sounds like a real good player.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Matthew Freytag tweets he'll be out the next two months with an injury. Not exactly sure what happened, but I'm looking into it.

Source says it's a lower back injury. I asked how serious, he said "well, two months...so pretty significant".... take that for what it's worth. He's supposed to make a full recovery, but too bad for the kids sake that he cant play in the Elite League this fall. Should be back by the start of the high school season.

Not a bad debut for Luke Kunin with the U.S. NTDP U17 team tonight, as he picks up a hat trick in a 12-1 win over the Janesville Jets.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

If you guys are looking for some good hockey, go check out Team Wisconsin vs. Omaha AAA today at noon & 6 pm at Cap Ice. Two of the top U16 teams in the country and future Badger Tony Stillwell (Team Wisconsin). Guessing we'll see at least one more future Badger in that game today.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Seamus Malone with a hat trick today following in the footsteps of Luke Kunin's hat trick last night. Shuey tweeted he's in Ann Arbor today, likely to watch the U17's play again.

I hope he's willing to either accelerate his schooling and come in next year or stay in the USHL another year after this one. I know a while back accelerating was ruled out...wonder if that continues to be the case?

I talked to his coach in February and he wasn't planning on it then. When players do it, it's usually a two year process to fit three years of schooling in. A lot of them use the summer to knock a few credits out of the way as well. If he decided this fall to fit two years into one, it would be virtually impossible while playing in the USHL. When I talked to his coach this spring he said Seamus was "committed to the longer route"...so take that for what it's worth.

Devin Brosseau appears to be an intriguing name out there in the BCHL right now. Quebec kid playing with the Nanaimo Clippers, off to a pretty good start. Good size 6-2, 185. 18 year old. Visited Boston College earlier this year.

Max Coatta (Minnetonka) who I mentioned before is off to a quick start with Penticton as well.

Chuck...is there any reason to believe their is mutual interesrt between Brosseau and UW?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Saw an article tonight that the Badgers are recruiting Irvine, Calif., native Alec Mehr. Same hometown as Nic Kerdiles. 5-foot-11, 180 pound center. Had a very good national camp this year with six goals and nine points in six games. He's a 97, so this is 2015 or later.

Sounds like Minnesota is recruiting him as well. He's also attended a WHL camp (Everett), but isn't planning on signing there (at least at this time). He's going to play prep school hockey in Connecticut, but I'm not sure at which one yet.

Edit: Was told he's at the Gunnery, a prep school in Connecticut.

Was at the Chicago Steel game on Saturday and saw Eaves taking in the contest. Does he do a lot of recruiting himself or does he take a look see before they make an offer to a player?

Shuey does a lot of the leg work in the evaluation process. Obviously the HC would love to get a look before making an offer. It's really tough to say right now given the huge needs they have to fill at the forward position for next season. Eaves may be getting out more this fall than he normally does to make sure they're making the correct choices. Obviously could have been watching UW commit Peter Tischke with Chicago as well.

Verona's Tarek Baker commits to Minnesota. Badgers came late to the party on this one.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is this town has known about him for several years now. Did the Badgers arrive late or were they just not that interested?

Either way, bummer to see him go there.

He was on my son's summer team (or maybe my son was on his team :o) about 3 or 4 years ago and even then, he was amazing to watch.

Well, obviously they've known about him for a long time, that's not an issue. But they didn't start showing interest in him until it was too late. I had heard that about a month ago, and his coach told me the exact same thing yesterday when we spoke (little did I know he'd be committing a few hours later).

Remember, UW hit on three of its top targets for 97-forwards already with Brock Boeser, Matthew Freytag and Luke Kunin. Those three were more of a priority than Baker over the summer. And that's not a knock on Tarek, because I think he's a really good player.

Obviously, he wasn't a priority.

Wish he would have chosen better - there are 57 other programs after all - but kids do funny things. :p

Told my kid last night and his first response was "Great for Tarek!" His second was "The frickin' Gophers?"

He said that Tarek was always cool to him on that summer team and being younger, my kid looked up to him.

All kidding aside about choices, I don't see this being anything like the last local kid who made that wrong choice. Good luck to him.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

On a related note, I've heard more than a few times that Eaves & Co. often project an attitude that Wisconsin native players should want to play for the Badgers enough that they'll wait around for the call.

Not saying that's what happened here, although I'll find out soon enough. Hockey in Dane County is a small world and everyone gossips.

I'm sure I'll have the full story (as retold by the gossiping hockey dads) by the weekend. :D

Not that I'll post specific dirt or details here though...
