Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Union vs Wisconsin? If the big 6/UW comes a calling, he won't turn it down for Union.

You'd be surprised. Isn't always just about hockey. Plenty of recent cases of kids (especially Southwest Suburban kids) who have turned down local offers to go to prominent academic institutions. Most notably the plethora of Edina kids that have headed East recently.

Edina kids turning down local offers to go to Notre Dame and Harvard is a bit different than a school like Union.

And Cornell, and RPI.... Union is a Top 50 school academically. Nothing to really sneeze at. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see a kid who may not have the prototypical NHL skillset look at education first. Not saying either is more likely, just saying it wouldn't be shocking either way.

You say that as if Union is superior in academics to the University of Wisconsin. It's not.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

I don't know if it's fair to judge Liberal Arts colleges on the same merits as a full-on University, but yeah... Union is not on par with UW. Unless Coatta really wants to design his own major or some other goofy thing like that, I don't think "a better education" will be used to decide to go to Union.

I've been reading this thread for quite some time and you all seem to miss that there are a lot of available forwards and defenseman from outside of the midwest that would love to attend UW. Many of these kids are from the East but it rare for anyone to ever mention any of these players.

They might also love to attend some eastern power programs at prestigious schools. I could use a few Mark Zengerles, though.

Max and Sam were pretty similar in development at the end of their HS careers... and Sam didn't exactly light the world on fire once he left HS hockey for the USHL. Naturally, Max should have more gaudy numbers in the BCHL than Sam had in the USHL given the BCHL isn't as deep and the amount of scoring reflects that. But I'm not convinced Max ends up being all that much different than Sam in college. Guess we'll see.

I didn't see him last year so I talked to a guy who sees a lot of high school games and he thought Sam's game would transition well to college. I remember a few years ago watching a few games and being very impressed with his ability to put the puck in the net...seemed like he was always around the net and usually converted when he had opportunities. Just listing him as a kid to keep an eye on, as UW obviously has a lot of spots to fill for '14 and he's obviously in the foot print.

I don't think it's anything personal, Wisconsin just plain hasn't recruited out on the East Coast very much under Eaves. The last one was Corbin McGuire but his grandparents live close to Madison and he spends time in the summers in Wisconsin so there was a connection there from the start.

So, I guess we don't spend a lot of time discussing those players because traditionally they don't end up at Wisconsin. It wouldn't shock me if they looked out East for '14 forwards, since they are probably turning over every rock possible right now looking for players. But, given the majority of us live in the mid-west, we just aren't as familiar with those players.

Do you have any specific players you were referring to?

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Another '14 forward option off the board. Avery Peterson commits to Nebraska-Omaha. He visited Madison last year but didn't have an offer last I knew (but that was months ago).

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. XXVI: Make him an offer he can't refuse

Peterson is not a huge loss. Big kid but not much fight in his game. Saw him play last year and was disappointed in his game.

Much of which could have been said of his older brother at the same stage. Similar size, similar style of play, etc. Not saying its a given but I just won't be surprised if the results in college end up similar as well.

I don't disagree in terms of him being a loss. Although I do think he battles more than you give him credit for. He's a nice, hard working kid. But I thought he seemed to struggle a bit with the pace of things when he played in the elite league last year. Not sure he's really top 6 forward material on a good college team. More likely a grinder with limited offensive upside.

Shattuck's Chase Phelps tweet's he's excited for Lethbridge camp tomorrow. That's a WHL team, if you weren't aware. Doesn't mean he'll sign there for sure (NCAA kids can be there for like 48 hours -- I can't remember the exact rule), but it appears another '14 option could be off the board.

Update: Was told by a source tonight UW wasn't pursing Phelps very aggressively anyways, so I'm not sure it would be a loss in the eyes of the UW staff if he did indeed end up signing with Lethbridge.

I'd like to see UW lock heads with BU and BC for some players, but perhaps they don't have any network out there to work off of. I'd really like to see the roster with more Canadian players on it.

Wouldn't matter if they came from China as long as they helped you win.

Exactly, we aren't the whinny MN crowd who spit and **** on players not from their "great" state solely because they aren't from their "great" state. Bigots.

You play hockey and you are good, come to UW, you are welcome here.

Right... everything being equal, of course I'd rather take a Wisconsin kid over a player from somewhere else. But, it's about winning hockey games...and you take the best players (best fits) for your team. If it's Canada, great. If it's Arizona, that's cool too. I'd be hard pressed to find a fan in the country that wouldn't want California's Nic Kerdiles on their team next season.
